Winter is here. Gotta get some stuff done on this old boat before spring. The wife wants to go camping at a lake a few hours away and she isn't ready for that yet. This is step 1 or 4 or 164 out of a lot of steps.

Flat top pistons and 305 heads. Why so much compression for a boat engine?
@@garyrise7696 looking back, there isn't really a reason. Just what I had at the time.

You have to figure out what is going wrong b4 rebuilding bc it's gonna happen again if you don't figure it out.
@@patrickwendling6759 It's gonna be a while before it gets rebuilt. It also won't be going back in that boat. It may live another day in a smaller boat or maybe a truck.

@@patrickwendling6759 It didn't overheat. Been very careful with it knowing how much boat it was pushing.
Were you fogging it with nitrous? The melted spark plugs got me, head gasket should not have failed if the heads & block were machined properly. Maybe running to hot then a rush of cold water. Let us know what the machine shop says.

@@oldseabee2938 You are ambitious to tackle this and these are special boats you cannot replace with any thing made today. Coincidentally my Hobo houseboat is a '71 as well, but only a fraction of the size, and it took me around 1200 hrs to rebuild it. I'll subscribe and follow your progress.

No pump shot. Needs a accelerator pump. Engine off looking down the carb giving it full throttle you should see 2 streams of fuel coming out. That's is the reason it bogs out. Retired professional mechanic
I will look into it. I was just stoked this thing fired up and ran, I was being siphon fed from a gas can at the time.
