NANDulator: a wonky, lo-fi DIY noise synth

NANDulator is a simple, lo-fi, CMOS-based noisemaker synth. It uses two IC's, a CD4093 (quad NAND gate) and a CD4046 (VCO/phase-locked loop), and a handful of passive components. Thank you! I do think it would be a suitable beginning project. A quick tip (you may have seen this elsewhere also): use sockets for the IC's, that way you can be sure to not ruin an IC by overheating the legs. Passive components (resistors, capacitors, etc.) are a bit more forgiving in that respect. Cheers, hope you have fun with it!

      @fstateaudio 6 місяців тому

      @@scaryrobloxvideos It's footage of me mostly failing miserably at the game Superflight. :) If you aren't familiar, it's a game that pretty much fits that description. You try to glide around blocky floating mountain-like formations, and you get points for skimming close to the landscape without hitting it. When you do crash, it starts you back at a spot above the formation you crashed into. Each "level" is one such formation, and you move between them by gliding far enough away to any side, eventually falling through the bottom (there is no real "ground"), or flying into a portal (which gives you points, and several of them appear on each level).

    I have done some no-input-mixing using two running instances of Ardour connected with jack as Ardour has a feedback protections thing and it is a bit cumbersome to set up. I am going to explore carla, it might be the goto solution.

    • @fstateaudio
      @fstateaudio 9 місяців тому

      Oh, that's cool, I haven't tried inter-application feedback like that. Fwiw, Reaper can do feedback routing too, the only protection feature is a checkbox to enable it in the project settings. Carla's definitely cool though, and it can be loaded as a plugin itself so you could use it within Ardour if you wanted.

    This is honestly one of the best noise sessions I've ever heard, of any subgenre.. I cannot overstate how pleasant this is. It's the childlike hints of melody and chaos like Beaches and Canyons by Black Dice, the blanketing drones and currents of power electronics, all wrapped in a soft and warm Boards of Canada package. Maybe you can refer some influences or aesthetic connections you have so I don't toot your horn too much lol. I don't know much noise, much less anything quite like this. IMHO you are one of the most capable and creative noise artists of our time. If this were 20-30 years ago and we weren't swimming in a digital sea you'd be featured in indie magazines and never forgotten.

    • @fstateaudio
      @fstateaudio Рік тому

      Wow, thanks so much for the kind words, that really made my day! Influences are a bit varied for sure. I do listen to noise, but also lots of other stuff, and I'm sure it all plays a role. Boards of Canada is definitely on that list for starters. :) My first love (80's/90's) was old punk (Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, Subhumans, M.D.C., ), then got really into industrial and then noise through that, and other electronic stuff around the same time. I think my first inspiration to try doing this kind of stuff came from things like the noisier interlude tracks Numb did, Skinny Puppy's more experimental stuff, the "Sutures" on Chemlab releases, etc. A few other favorites in that realm would be Godflesh, Foetus, Die Form, Out Out, Sielwolf, Pig, Cop Shoot Cop, Cubanate, Front 242, Dive, lots of stuff from the Ant-Zen label, Tarmvred, C/A/T, Templebeat, Swamp Terrorists, Test Dept., Scar Tissue, Empusae. Other electronic stuff would be Future Sound of London, Autechre, Coldcut, various movie soundtracks, Orbital, The Prodigy, The Orb. As far as noise/experimental stuff some would be Aube, Coil, Bullshit Market, Atrium Carceri, Lustmord, RDKPL, Moth Bucket. I'm also quite into some metal stuff like Sunn 0))), Meshuggah, LLNN, The Lion's Daughter, Convulsing, Napalm Death, Mastiff, Converge. I guess that got a bit rambly, but there you go. :)

      @@fstateaudio wowzers, thank you so much for this lmao I'm going to go through it and ping you when I find things I love! I've only listened to the Numb - Numb first LP and the last two tracks are BANANAS. Not a fan of industrial much, maybe it'll grow on me through this process, but these noise tracks are 🔥 and make it worth it regardless. I really love that the super heavy decimated drums sound like what I get from my old ass ES-1 with stock sounds lol. Such a banger!

      @@fstateaudio Really those last two tracks (on the numb - numb LP) are a kind of anti-culture in a deep and broad sense, in that it doesn't align with the consciousness of today. I can't so much as think straight when listening to these, it pulls me out of the world. I can't be productive. I can't bop-a-long anymore. I can't idle through it, much less work through it. It's disorienting, maddening, challenging. I fucking love music like this. Fucking drags you back to yourself and doesn't let you escape. It is SENSUAL. okay sorry, lol. Now that they're over I don't think I can listen to anything else. Wow man. If you can think of anything that touches those last two tracks specifically, I would be incredibly grateful.

      @@bigggmoustache8868 Cool, I'm really glad you found something you dig so much in there! I think some of the early industrial stuff like SPK is similar in the sense of seeing influences in Numb's stuff, but not necessarily sounding quite the same. There's a newer band called Cardinal Noire ( cardinalnoire.bandcamp.com/ ) that seems to draw a lot of influence from Numb imo, and one of the members has a side project called W424 on the same BC page that has some noisier stuff that I would say comes very close.

      @@fstateaudio Yeah y'know I love the avantegarde but its best when it isn't avantegarde for avantegarde's sake imo, early industrialism wasn't even so shallow in the 80s and 90s (throbbing gristle, coil, et al), its perhaps even impossible to do so. Your work isn't either, I listened to this on repeat for a while, its transporting and therefore explorable, and actually really pretty. I used to play in an impromptu kind of band that I thought was a bit like static ouija in the same sense. And if you don't think that it was so deep and that you were just on the surface there playing with that interface (looks a bit like a cityscape), I think that just more so proves my point, for depth requires a surface which blind-sights. Good job

    • @fstateaudio
      @fstateaudio Рік тому

      @@LostMerkaba Thanks again for the kind words! I'm with you on the avant-garde for it's own sake thing. I don't think I would even really describe my stuff that way, and honestly I'm not really sure even the harshest noise qualifies as all that "avant-garde" at this point. I just try to make stuff I like to hear, and if others like too that's great, lol. The interface may seem imposing from an outside view of the finished product, but the approach is very exploratory and a build-it-as-I-go kind of thing, so probably not as technical as it may appear.
