Some people think Hannibal was sniffing the air to see if he could smell Clarice's 'cunt' after having told her he couldn't, but I'm thinking he was actually doing her a kindness. By demonstrating what a keen and accurate sense of smell he had (Evian, L'Air du Temps), he was assuring Clarice beyond a doubt that Miggs was lying.
