Not sure if 3 is too young to a child to start piano. Suzuki teachers think kids should start at an early age. Coming from a non-musical family myself, my parents were not keen sending kids to music lessons (piano, cello, violin, guitar, etc).

This is sound advice for any parent, and once again, thank you for posting so many helpful videos. I have found every one I've watched to be interesting and informative. This is not in any way intended as a criticism of content for this particular one, because the content itself got me thinking, and these are my thoughts for what they are worth: As someone who is fairly new to teaching - and I'm sure there are others in my position - I am wondering is it really always best to send a new learner to the most experienced teacher? In our local area, the very best and most experienced teacher, who is also an examiner and festival adjudicator, could potentially be quite frightening to a sensitive child or adult. It is my own teacher/mentor to whom I am referring, recommended to me by a friend (also a piano teacher) who advised me "they are a scary person, but they are the best, and will get you on". I am getting old, and have grown a thicker skin over the years. I generally get on well with with my teacher, but there have been a few occasions when I could easily have walked out of my lesson due to the manner in which feedback was delivered. I didn't, but as an adult, I have that choice. A young learner doesn't. My teacher would definitely not have been the right fit for me when I was a very shy 4yr old beginner. I appreciate that there are also teachers out there who are wonderful with young people, but who frankly can't teach! One of my granddaughters had such a teacher. Thankfully she now learns with someone who knows what they are doing (not me, I hasten to add - much too far to travel) I have set my charging rate in line with my experience, and it is rightly not as much as I pay for my own lessons, but does that make me, or others in my position a less desirable teacher? I would like to think not. For me, it's early days, and time will tell. I believe every student is an individual, and as a teacher, the challenge is to find the best way to teach each one, tailoring the method and rate of instruction to their individual needs, and making the learning process interactive, enjoyable and fun. All inexperienced teachers need to teach pupils in order to become experienced! I live in an area where some parents have a very good standard of living, and can afford to pay higher rates than I have chosen to charge, but that is not the case for everyone. If a lower charge rate can make music education accessible for pupils who might otherwise not be able to learn, I think it has to be a good thing. I like the idea of interviewing beforehand with the parent of the new pupil (or the pupil themselves if an adult). It is not something that is done so much in the UK, but I can see the value in it. Food for thought - thank you!
