    So, this was an interesting video, but it leaves a few too many questions open. You've piqued my curiosity, though. What kind of firm did work at, in Dubai? Was it a big or small one? Did they have a specialty? What did they have you doing, most of the time? I've heard people in that field complain about the insane working hours. Why is that such a common problem? Is it because the client or the firm (or both) demand unreasonable timelines on projects? Why don't the guilds or professional associations push back on those conditions? I'd be interested in hearing your insight on these questions. Meantime, all the best, my friend.

      I worked in a medium to large sized firm, worldwide, so lot of cogs in the machine type of thing...not sure why industry is so toxic tbh but I'm assuming clients who have big money and want things DONE. Working in the Middle East is also extra pressure as they build fast. It just wasn't worth it for me. Thanks for your curious comment 😀

    Great point about human imperfections! One of the things that urban sketchers are often challenged on is whether or not they sketched a scene on location. This generally leads to snapping a photo of your sketchbook with the actual subject in the background. This is something that will take some time for AI to mimic when your subject is very indigenous to your neighborhood. So we still have a need to show our world one sketch at a time.

    • @DesignDrawDo
      @DesignDrawDo 2 місяці тому

      Even so, the ai won't capture your exact scenery/location. Every nook and cranny of this earth is still unique to our individual experiences! (At least for the next few years lol)

  • @ledlom

    Yeah, that's a big part of why I urban sketch. It's makes a much better impression on my memory and senses than a picture. Well put.

    Just started watching the full video and thought that rather than drawing the limits, bounding box of your design thumbnail and endeavour to put the design within it, why not outline what you want to show and then draw the borders around it? Now back to the video.

    • @DesignDrawDo
      @DesignDrawDo 2 місяці тому

      Interesting point but constraints actually can make it easier to work. Thumbnails are there to eventually transfer the design to a larger piece (which has physical limitations) hence drawing the border around the thumbnail sketch allows a more accurate representation of what the final drawing will look like

With Ai art taking over artist's jobs I'm not sure If I am taking the right decision to become an artist at this day and age but one thing I am sure that I don't want to return to architecture anymore. You have to find your nitch and make yourself valuable. And willing to take on any project no matter how good or how shitty it is. Finally we take more good projects. And work where the money is. My former employer was asked by a client to come look at his fireplace. He agreed but the client said it has to be on Sunday. So he agreed and did 3 houses, and several large projects in NJ and FL.

    Some people are not artistic/creative (like me). I have tried and practiced for years to better myself at art, with no success whatsoever. Sometimes things are just not meant to be. Art, cooking, music, writing, it doesn't matter, I'm hopeless at all of them, and they are all creative pursuits. People who claim "everyone's creative" are deluding themselves.

    • @DesignDrawDo
      @DesignDrawDo 4 місяці тому

      Firstly, I would say ask what is your definition of 'creative' - what is the benchmark? Who are you comparing yourself to? Secondly, what's your goal with it? Is it to make art that sells, or is it for self expression? There are SO many types of creative pursuits and hobbies, that I find it impossible to say you are not 'creative'. Everyone is creative in some form, even if it's not in the traditional sense (think, diy, or problem solving).

    Question. Who said you couldn't be both an architect and a graphic designer? Regarding the other professions that you mentioned, I know folks who are in the medical field, nurses and doctors who voiced the same concerns regarding pay and long hours. However, I 100% agree with you that changing careers is normal. But during the transition, ask yourself, honestly, "Why am I making this change"? "Is it because I want a job, leading to a career that's low stress but with incredibly high pay"? If that's the case, it's not happening, no matter what other social media platforms shows. Architecture, just like any other profession has a "love and hate" relationship. Just be aware that although graphic design is under the same umbrella of architecture, there will be times where you love it and hate it. I know architects who are also engineers, graphic designers, sculptors, and fashion designers. Just something to think about. Thanks for sharing.

    • @chapinachango8002
      @chapinachango8002 5 місяців тому

      Because it’s emotionally, physically, and spiritually exhausting to do. Doing architecture requires you to be incredibly knowledgeable in so many facets, including being tech saavy to be able to draft or render. It sucks all the energy out of you. Kudos to those who can do both.

    • @DesignDrawDo
      @DesignDrawDo 4 місяці тому

      You are right, Virgil Abloh was a great case in point of this. So whilst I don't disagree with you, I also agree with the reply to this that it can be mentally exhausting and, from what I've seen, pay for junior architects is not worth it to continue :)

It doesn’t change in the real world, the pressure is worse because you must make a living. in fact i experienced so much abuse by bosses, with unlivable wage, i went through major depression. Got my degree, to be enslaved to student loan debt for the rest of my life. Get out now.

    Watching Ali Abdaal's videos really gave me the motivation to start my own channel. I started off trying to post every week. I even got to the point where I was posting 2 videos a week. Let me tell you. Weekly videos is bad advice. I was forced to take a break due to some family issues, and it was actually the greatest thing for my channel. I realized that I don't need to post every week - I don't have to put that stress on myself. Now, I only make videos for me: advice for my younger self and teaching fun techniques I learned. And I post 1 - 2 times a month. And my channel is growing and the community I am building is stronger because I have the time to really engage with people rather than just trying to churn out videos. Great video! Looking forward to see what you do when you're back.
