    Sia has EDS. It’s heavily associated with autism and is even one cause of autism because it is a genetic collagen mutation that structures the brain differently, aka not neurotypical. There is a very good possibility that Sia is high functioning and on the autism spectrum. I personally have both. EDS effects anything with collagen so, everything in your body. EDS leaves you prone to organ ruptures, joint dislocations, lack of oxygen to the brain, ataxia, tachycardia, gastroperesis, brain aneurism, sudden death and so much more. EDS is an invisible disability and we go through life being confronted for stuff like this, being called weird, freaks. liar, faker, attention seeking etc. and that is exactly what is going on here. EDS gives us thick stretchy skin and an elastic heart that stretches to the point it snaps and bursts. And another one bites the dust. The reverse ableism thrown at Sia is astounding and I think you owe Sia an apology. Sia owes no apology. EDS is one of the most excruciating disorders around when things break down and it’s deadly. Sia is not as able as you might think, and is much closer to the autistic community than you might think too.

    Kati using we she does it in every video, agree with your assessment that she does it to be more relatable. Though I don't like person first language I can understand why she phrased it that way, you look through the comments of different videos and people that are in training/college/uni they are all taught that the only correct way to speak is person first language, they have had it hammered into them so much that they call it out when they see identity first as an automatic reflex.

    As a 39 year old autistic guy I would like to point out that using the term holistic is disparaging of autism see the idea with them being holistic means that they are whole thus implying that we are not so and I'm not coming down on you at all I'm just letting you know that it's probably not the best term of use I would stick with neurotypical

    • @booksandbrains3930
      @booksandbrains3930 3 роки тому

      Hey, thank you so much for this! I can’t find the time stamp for me saying holistic but if memory serves me I meant it more in the medical sense of looking at the whole rather than the sum of its parts, so focusing on the entire experience of autism rather than one particular aspect (so, for example, communication within this movie). I totally understand where you’re coming from though and really appreciate you giving me this feedback. I’m very grateful and will definitely bear this in mind in future videos. x

    Fantasy - 'The Lord of the Rings, JRR Tolkien (read it at breakneck speed when 12 years old, had reactive depression for days when I finished it, because there was no more), Adventure - 'The Lost World', Arthur Conan Doyle (classic adventure), Romance - 'Catriona', Robert Louis Stevenson (what could be more romantic than a romance in the Highlands?) Dystopian - 'Brave New World', Aldous Huxley (THE classic dystopian novel), Mystery - 'Emphyrio', Jack Vance (a Science Fiction mystery, Vance's science is not physics it's comparative anthropology), Historical, 'The Firedrake', Cecelia Holland (an exiled Irish warrior sells his prowess in killing people to William of Normandy), Non-Fiction, 'The Origin of Species', Charles Darwin (not the best read, but possibly the most important book ever written - but I am a biologist), Children's, 'Elidor', Alan Garner (it is just a gem of a book). I have read the Alexander Pope verse translation of the Iliad, but I prefer Aeschylus' plays. The Iliad could be sub-titled 'The Incredible Sulk' or 'How Javelins Kill People'. ;)

    You explain it very clearly but can't autistic people have just a little compassion and identify with Sia who has three or four disabilities both mental and physical? I'm also disabled and life hasn't always been easy for me either but this movie truly lifted my spirits and inspired me that despite the disabilities we all share, through her music eg Unstoppable, The Greatest, Move Your Body, etc Sia has risen above her personal disabilities and brought joy, inspiration and love, even preventing people from suicide as Sia was suicidal herself once. Instead the Autistic community has shown nothing but cruelty and hate towards Sia and they should be ashamed of their actions. How about identifying with someone who is most likely more disabled than themselves, but instead of whinging and hating, has created voluminous inspiring music, and made a magnificent film?

    • @booksandbrains3930
      @booksandbrains3930 3 роки тому

      Hi James! Thanks for your comment. This is exactly why I mentioned Sia’s own disability in this video and ideas of lateral ableism. It’s totally possible for disabled people to be ableist towards other disabled people. For example, I’m probably guilty of not thinking hard enough about the physical accessibility of venues when I recommend them to friends in wheelchairs. We’ve been excessively kind to Sia - sadly she hasn’t returned that kindness. When an autistic actor said she would’ve been happy to take a look at the script or advise, Sia replied that maybe she just wasn’t a very good actor, despite never having auditioned for the role. Many of us have offered to help, offered to talk to her about why Autism Speaks is damaging. Ultimately though, advocacy isn’t reliant on the oppressed being kind. We shouldn’t have to be kind to be listened to, and our anger is justifiable. I’m really glad Sia has helped you, and that’s great. I hope you enjoy the movie and I respect your choices, just as I expect you respect my choices to voice my concerns about it and decide not to see it. x

      I've read some horrifying comments on Twitter and Instagram directed at Sia and just wanted to point out that Sia herself has her own disabilities (Bi Polar Disorder, PTSD (from her fiance dying in a car accident, watching a man being murdered right in front of her, being stalked by a violent man with schitsofrenia), Graves Disease, Hypothyroidism and suicidal ideation. All I'm asking the Autistic Community is to give the woman a break instead of being angry and hateful towards Sia. Your post is the most level headed one I've read coming from someone with Autism.

    What i really think that happened is that austitic people are just embarrased of Maddy's roll as low functioning autistic. Nobody complained of The Good Doctor character, why? Simple, he is a brilliant doctor. Everyone were like: look world, autistic people can be the best; but now everyone are like: oh no, we autistic can't be low functioning, that's not us. In the end autistic people are just shaming a part of their own community, the part that Maddy represents, simply because is the image they wanna run away of, that they wanna ignore, cause is not majority; but it actually exists, and that's what is portrayed in the film. Apart from recognizing that Sia's management of all this has not been the best

    I don’t have autism but until I was 6 I had regular melt downs and Extreme violence at my school and they would immediately restrain me and tackle me to the ground they did the same to the kids with autism. And then they would purposely humiliate us by focusing us to get taken in to the 8 graders class room and embarrassing us to the whole class even now I’m 16 and I still have nightmares and Extreme anxiety. I remember distinctly they threatened to make an autistic 6 grader go back to first grade because they said he was being a baby keep in mind the kid would be screaming that he didn’t want to go but they would still continue to threaten him.We got shaken and yelled at keep in mind that if you get hit of yelling at you immediately fight back so it only encouraged my rage to fight back . The only way to get out of there retrain was to basically pled and cry that your sorry. I hit bit and kick and I still regret nothing they treated us like animals Sorry I shared so much but sometimes I just wanted to yelled and scream that I’m not ok

    im undiagnosed but theres a lot of things in my extensive research into (non puzzle piece) autism sources that always resonate with me. i feel guilty at times because i remember "betraying" diagnosed autistic classmates in school that i would mostly be nice to but id ignore them in favor of masking but it wasnt worth it nobody liked me any more for it. my parents were momentarily appeased because i was a worse friend to openly autistic kids. its all a very troubling experience to deal with the ramifications of an autistic closet and a gay/transgender one as a young adult. would you ever make a video about autism in adults, like diagnosed in childhood vs in adulthood vs undiagnosed?
