New seats and interior space upgrades for my Mazda Miata / MX-5
So, I bought new seats, untouched by any nefarious vandals cutting out foam to gain interior space. So, let's cut out foam to gain interior space. Also, I fix the handbrake lever poking my leg, and install a steering wheel spacer that allows me to actually turn the wheel without my knees being in the way.
Chapters in this video:
00:00 Intro
00:20 Steering wheel spacer
02:50 Parking brake lever modification
04:20 Foamectomy
08:50 Installing the new seats
09:30 Outro and new video foreshadowing
Music credits, in order of appearance:
- All music, including the intro song, was generated using suno.ai
Closing notes:
As much as I think that working on your car is both great fun and very cost-effective, any work you do on your car is at your own risk. I made a best effort to correctly state all torques, tools, etc, but double check these before you follow any of the steps shown in this video. Please work safely - I've been saved by good safety equipment more than once. Don't do stupid things - don't work under a car supported only by a jack, don't use sharp tools without protective gloves, and do get yourself a nice pair of safety goggles.

Mazda Miata / MX-5 Valve Cover Gasket Replace (+Cleaning, and painting it Gold!)
Переглядів 4,5 тис.8 місяців тому
When changing the spark plugs, I was unpleasantly surprised by 2 of them being covered in oil. Of all possible reasons, the valve cover gasket leaking would be the most logical, and easy to fix, reason. So, let's get the cover off, install a new gasket, and while I'm at it, rattle some paint cans. Chapters in this video: 00:00 Intro 00:20 Removing cables and hoses 01:50 Removing the valve cover...
Mazda MX-5 / Miata 1.6 Throttle Body, Intake Manifold & EGR Valve Removal + Cleanup (BZ6E, NA & NB)

My Mazda MX-5, or Miata, is back on the road after over a year of being stored in the back of a workshop. While it run, it doesn't run well, so I'll be cleaning up, fixing, and replacing parts of the intake, engine, and exhaust system. This is the first video of a couple of engine-related videos I have coming up, in which I take off the air intake system: throttle body, EGR valve, and intake ma...

Replacing the fuel filler flap locking motor on a 2008 Saab 9-3 Sport Combi

In this video, I replace the fuel filler flap locking motor / solenoid. This was necessary because the old motor did not open all the way, which meant I'd always struggle to pry the flap to open when I needed to get gas. The whole ordeal was easier than expected, so if you have the same problem, I definitely feel replacing it is doable. Part numbers: - Fuel filler flap locking motor: 12786283 T...

Replacing the cabin fan blower motor / interior fan on a Saab 9-3 NG
Переглядів 4,4 тис.3 роки тому
In this video, I'll be replacing the cabin fan blower motor of a Saab 9-3. I've seen people successfully using sewing machine oil to lubricate the bearings and get the assembly moving. It's worth a try, and as you still need to remove and then reinstall the motor this video should still help, but it did not work for me so I decided to replace it. Note: This is my first ever video, so there are ...

Excellent video which helped me remove and lubricate a squeaking blower motor on my car. The motor and fan just push out of the housing after removing the regulator and three small Torx screws. Then you can feed some oil into the bearings at both ends of the motor. Many thanks.

This is the best video for this I have found, hands down. There is no substitute for watching every step get done. One trick I found was to only use ratchet handled to loosen the 7 screws, then use ratchet bit w fingers to screw out the torx screws.

On my 1990 na I shortened the throttle pedal by about 10 cm. This allows my heel to come forward and lowers my knee away from the parking-brake handle. Just a little welding to relocate the pedal pad higher on the throttle arm. Have a look and you will see what I mean. I assume the nb and na are similar in this respect.

Excellent video. Straight to the point and no unnecessary BS and waffling. Other Miata UA-camrs might stretch this work out to 30+ minutes. I’m happy that you didn’t. How much did the foamectomy and steering wheel spacer help? And how tall are you that you needed these mods? I’m 182cm and I was considering the foamectomy. I hadn’t thought about the steering wheel spacer but it looks like it might also help.

    • @thegreygarage
      @thegreygarage 5 місяців тому

Thanks so much! I try to edit as tightly as possible so great to hear that you like that style. I’m 194cm, so without the foamectomy my head pushes into the roof liner haha. Cutting the foam lowered my seating position by around 3cm which was enough to make it work for me. The steering wheel - without the spacer, my legs touch push into the wheel at all times, making it hard to corner. The spacer creates enough space for me to properly control the car. To be honest, it’s my weight more than my length - I have chonky legs haha. I might go for a smaller diameter quick release steering wheel in the future but I’m not sure about losing the airbag yet. It’s a small and vulnerable car so I kinda like the small bit of added safety… let’s see what the future brings.

I'm looking to buy NB rn. I'm 191cm and test driven 2 so far. I have like 80-85kg, so I'm not chonky :D but the stock steering wheel is also a problem for me, cause my legs are touching it at all times. The second Miata I drove had a custom MOMO steering wheel, which is a little smaller, but it was enough for me to be comfortable. I don't like the idea of losing the airbag and I totally agree with your concerns, it's a fragile car. So this spacer seems like a good idea! But I'm afraid that the steering wheel will be too close to the seat :/

Very nice video. Thank you. You packed a lot of information into 14.5 minutes, almost too much. So many UA-cam car mechanical videos stretch out the simplest work into a series of overly long videos. It’s refreshing to come across someone who values the viewer’s time and is doing the opposite.

8:05 Do people in the Netherlands use feet and inches when measuring a person’s height, or is this to make it easier for Americans to understand? If you’re doing it to placate the audience from one country, (the US), then I might suggest you don’t. This American prefers to hear the metric system used 😀 Great work on this Miata and very nicely presented in this video. I’m subscribed and looking forward to more Miata content.

Perfect car to fix up and run as a daily! Pretty much everything is accesible, available for decent prices, and with so many on the roads there is a tutorial or video on how to do it. Just a good basic sports car and in your case the perfect color. Been looking at a newer model, an ND, for my second car but the colors are no where near as fun as this.
