Hmm... yet another foreign/very white interpretation of a very white New Orleans that pastes Uncle Lion-sans bass drum-in front to give it some credibility. As such, it is fairly unremarkable, but you had a good time doing it. Thanks for using Uncle Lionel, who floated out the flood on his bass drum and is no longer with us. I hope he got something for it; tourists love highlighting us and not paying us for our beauty.
Thank you for the comment. I think the context is to be seen internationally and at the same time it needs to be contextualized. Uncle Lionel came to Europe to work and bring his cultural contribution at a time in history where his city was on its knees. It was a very difficult time for him from all points of view, including family. I am sure that the elegance and depth of the person were never questioned or even shown for anything other than what they were at that time. No victimhood and no attempt to show situations that were different from what was going on. Mr. Batiste had a personality that went beyond the musical aspect and beyond caricature, something never tried to explain or emphasize here in Europe because it was too complex and probably subject to trivialization. Uncle Lionel needed to be known and contextualized. I am honored to have been a friend of his. This applies to the whole film and people involved. I have worked for over 35 to promote and help develop the music culture of New Orleans, even putting myself through the wringer. I don't consider myself as you say a “tourist” or "superficial consumer of NOLA music" and, I'm sorry to say, but I don't like to think of “your beauty” when I certainly feel I am an active part of “our beauty.” Thank you @SpockMonroe.
