Dave B and Dave K Double trapping on a Hobie Tiger in Vasiliki Bay on 27 September 2024. We got a big azz boat to go 20 knots. Note the swimming goggles for the low deck splashing in very salty water. Not bad for two people over 100 Kilos each.

Nice action, 8 out of 10 for the dismount, top marks for playing the mainsheet. Both boats could possibly ease travellers and have more sheet in.

Don’t give up or go to a Hobie 16. Watch Joe Bennett videos about righting. The key is to get the wind to help you. When you get onto the hull, walk/shuffle/slide all the way to the pointy/front end of the hull in the water and make it go mostly underwater. It’s tricky not to slide off and keep from tilting over. The next part is the hardest - you have to wait. And wait. When the wind is about 90 degrees to the jib stay, you’re perfect. The wind should be making the jib fly up out of the water a little bit. Now when you pull on the righting line, as the boat comes up, the wind will get under the sail and then you wait some more. Make sure once you are sure it’s coming over, dive onto the hull that was in the water to keep it from flipping again the other way. if it’s 15-25, there is enough to help and get it done. Now... my opinion is that mast Bobs make solo righting impossible. It’s added weight at the end of a lever. If you didn’t have a mast Bob, you probably would have got it, but then you don’t have the protection from turtling. I haven’t tried to unturtle solo, but unturtling with two is dead easy. Seriously, don’t go smaller unless you want to give up speed. I’m putting together a retirement tour-where do you sail and is it good wind most of the time? So far I’m definitely going to Lake Hefner in OKC and Cheney reservoir in Kansas and lake Mcconaghey in Nebraska. After Florida of course.

How much do you weigh? I'm probably near 190 with wet clothes and a life preserver. I'm in central California but if you come this way I'll go sailing with you if I can. I think part of the problem was it was a big gust that got me and then there wasn't enough wind to have help with wind under the sails.

I went out yester by myself on my 45 year old hobie 16. It was gusty 15 - 25 knots or so. I mounted a mast bob just before going out since I'm not sure my mast is water tight. Good thing I did because I capsized a little before sunset. I tried and tried. I'm 180lbs. I filled a garbage bag with about 80 lbs of water and slung it over my shoulder - didn't work. Finally a power boat felt pity for me and pulled me upright. It took me hours to warm back up. I'm frustrated. I'm thinking of trying a righting pole next.. It looks like I'm going to have to create that myself. I'm also thinking I might need to move down to a Hobie 14... When I went over I was in an area that was lighter winds but just got one big gust. There wasn't much wind after to help me upright...

Hello Steve, my name is Olli and i'm a fan from show us your cat by Jo's Joyrider TV. I do not know how important you are to originality in your Hobie Cat 16, but if it's not so important to you then I would add the jib trim. Her is the Link to a Hobie Cat Manuel from HC in France. www.google.de/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwial96Gv47kAhUCJ1AKHY8oDAoQFjAAegQIABAC&url=https%3A%2F%2Fcatawest.de%2Fmediafiles%2FSonstiges%2Fhc16.pdf&usg=AOvVaw1Rbp90uQprkwzJBZY-e5Df On page 5 you can see all the thing's that are needed to bild the system. the pretzel sliders (we call the Jib-traveler's) you can also by for the old jib traveler rail. If you can get it in the US you can call Sport Mohr in North Germany it´s about 25,- €. For the deflection of the Fock traveler sheet you can well the harken block number Harken HA-218-656-121, which are fastened with two stainless pop rivets on the front corner casting. so you have the opportunity to pull your jib closer to the trailing edge, which puts more pressure on the entire rig and greatly improves the hard on the wind courses. Thanks for sharing. have a Hobie-Day!

How many tries before you are so exhausted and cold that you spend the rest of the day waiting for a rescue? Get a dry suit or an emergency beacon?
