    This is genuinely my dream car and I want a plug in but don't wanna charge at home. I can charge elsewhere I just can't seem to find adequate videos on it. Everyone says go hybrid only but I enjoy the ev only and extra milage, I still have many questions so hopefully I can find more videos like this great vid!

    Leave it on Auto Mode and try to keep the battery charged so it can run as an EV most of the time. The battery is large so in hybrid mode it will keep running the gas engine most of the time to keep the battery charged during a trip.

    I had a 2017 which I just traded in for a new 2024 XLE. With the 2017, by simply being in ECO mode, doing the speed limit, (NOT ABOVE IT) AND using cruise control WHEN EVER POSSIBLE, I was able to average anywhere between 58-60 MPG. I tested the 2024 XLE using the same method yesterday, and got 67.5 MPG! What I like most about my method is, you let the car and its HEV cruise computer do the decisions of when to "hyper-mile" or not, (efficiency, efficiency, efficiency is EVERYTHING) and don't have to even think about it. Nice test with your Prime!

      Hmmm? Interesting comment. Just because the MAGA movement is past, the people remain. I will have to give this some thought. Of course much of the Fear that drove MAGA is extinguished, but not all. I suppose some will come out of the "cult" and resume their lives. Others will not. Society will move on.

    I have a 2023 Prime XSE Premium, and I live in a house without an HOA (thank God). I wanted to address the add-ons you mentioned, I have my own. 1) I got a phone holder that fits into one of the cup holders and holds my phone just behind the shifter. My USB cable is coiled (to make it just long enough) and on longer drives this is where my phone rides, available if I need to touch it. 2) A long time ago I made a crude "Shotgun Caddy" that resides in the passenger seat, since I am almost always alone in the car. It has a spot for my oversized mug and a box/organizer to hold my "stuff". The base is just a piece of plywood cut to fit into the seat space and a piece of 1x4 holds up the back end so it is level. There are hooks to the back so that the seat belt can secure it. There is even space on it to drop a shopping bag or something. The firt version of this thing, a very long time ago, was plywood with a kitchen utensil organizer bolted down on it, very useful. 3) I want to get a cheap trunk organizer to hold some basic tools and supplies, like bottled water and a change of clothes and shopping bags and stuff like that, just to keep them from scattering all over back there. I figure about $20 should do the trick. I love my new Prius, but one month after buying it I got rear-ended HARD and the car spent three and a half months in the shop. Then I got it back and got laid off, so the car sits idle until I find a new job. Bummer. but hey, I keep it charged. To resolve the charging issue at your home, might I suggest you simply get a really heavy-duty outdoor extension cord from Home Depot and have the plug about where you want it? You could hide it when it is not in use, just kind of shove it into the shrubs or something. Is that possible in your circumstance? I know it is not advised to use an extension cord for the charger, but I do. Word-to-the-wise: Keep the charger out of the direct sunlight. If it gets warmed up too much it shuts down charging. Keep it in the shade.

    • @johnstarotpodcast

      @@johnstarotpodcast I just saw this video and it made me think of you. ua-cam.com/video/TM9vwIYZpQs/v-deo.html Apparently there is a problem with thieves cutting the cables off charging systems for the copper. This is a problem.

      @@johnstarotpodcast My concern is that it is not just you who will suffer. Anyone that buys a plug-in car of any type that does not have a garage for safe charging will be impacted. The video says it costs about $4K to replace the cut-off cable. The problem is that due to the high current these chargers provide there has to be a huge electrical path, which means VERY thick wires and lots of copper. If cutting off those cables becomes common it will quickly become impossible to keep the charging stations in repair. No one will be able to charge their car if they don't have a house. All public chargers will simply fall out of use. It will basically rule out EVs for all but the rich.

    I have a 2023 Prius Prime XSE Premium, and I also live in Orange County. In late March I took a trip to Tucson. I was in HV mode, ECO mode, and going out I-10 I had the cruise control set for 90 mph (I was in a hurry.) There were some trucks and traffic, but mostly I just cruised. I don't remember if the AC was on, that would make a difference. In the end, I arrived in Tucson with about 35 mpg. The higher speed really killed it. Coming back via I-8 with emptier roads I set the cruise control for 76 mph and relaxed more. I got about 40 mpg. The Prius is just not made for protracted high-speed I guess. Still, it did better than my old 2008 Corolla would have and gave me more power and comfort to boot. I noticed that the speedometer always seem to settle in at one mph less than the cruise control setting. One time, on the way out to Tucson, I was accelerating onto the freeway in EV mode (after filling the tank) and without releasing the throttle I punched into HV mode, and I could really tell when the engine kicked in. I bought this car to deal with commute traffic to work in the LA area, it is the perfect car for that job. Long trips like the one to Tucson are nice to be able to do, but they are not the primary task. I am so glad I bought this Prius rather than some EV-only car, yuck! Since I got home from Tucson and refilling the tank, it has been about 6 weeks and the needle is still on full. I have covered about 300 miles, but the tank is still full.

    So, EV vs PHEV vs ICE; for us (newly retired couple), the economics involved were paramount. Where we live there have been very concerning changes to our climate and it's clear why. Those who deny the reality are doomed to live with it, just like the rest of us you see. We'd have gladly gone full EV except for the cost. Around here, an entry level EV costs $60,000+. Add another $3,000 for a charger (and installation), and the numbers become large. We just traded in our 12 year old Prius C for a 2024 Prime (got it five weeks ago after a 21 month wait). We are getting 80km on a charge that costs about $1.72 CAD. But, all said, we paid "only" 5/8's of the total cost of an EV for the Prime. Regular gas here is currently at around $ 7.20 a USG. Do the math to see the benefit It's a rare day we need to drive over 80km. No visits to gas pumps for us anymore. Oh, and almost all of our power is hydro generated, none of it is with coal..

    • @johnstarotpodcast
      @johnstarotpodcast 4 місяці тому

      Wow nice. You are really enjoying the car and getting reasonable results. I do not have the abilty to charge at home. So I charge at work. (I will post about it today) But even so, my transportation cost are way down, and the car has great style. I have been reading more articles about hybrid being very popular as full EV sales are leveling off.

    • @TomLawlor-iq6gm
      @TomLawlor-iq6gm 4 місяці тому

      Yes, we agree. We're retired now so charging at work is mute but by my figures say a full charge costs us $1.72, or, about 1/4 of the cost for gas for the same distance (we pay in excess of $7.20 a USG), for an 80km range. Takes all of 40 seconds to plug-in after we back into our driveway and we won't be buying any gas for the next 12 years or so. Factor in the $23,000+ extra cost for a full EV (over a hybrid), and the Prime is the clear winner.

    Appreciate your insights, John! I have a 2010 Prius and am loving the new design. Hopefully I can test drive a Prime and compare it to the Tesla (that I have driven). I love Toyota, just gotta find one with a good price when more are on the used market. New Tesla’s are coming in less expensive than Prius, but there are trade offs I know to both sides. Glad to hear from an actual owner. Also wanted to share the good news of Christ with you and pray that you come to a right relationship with God through His Son Jesus- GOD: God is the creator of all things. He is perfectly holy, worthy of all worship, and will punish sin Man: All people, though created good, have become sinful by nature. From birth, all people are alienated from God, hostile to God, and subject to the wrath of God Christ: Jesus Christ, who is fully God and fully man, lived a sinless life, died on the cross to bear God's wrath in the place of all who would believe in him, and rose from the grave in order to give his people eternal life Response: God calls everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and trust in Christ in order to be saved.

    I have a 2023 Prius XSE Premium. Last weekend I drove it from Orange County CA to Tucson and back, about 400 miles each way. I measured MPG the old fashioned way, calculating it ipon filling the tank and checking the odometer and keeping a log. I drove almost exclusively in HV mode, Eco mode. On the way to Tucson I will discount the trip up until the first fill-up, as it had a lot of battery-mode driving. I was after the freeway MPG with only the engine. I filled up in Blythe and again in Tucson, allowing me to check that MPG. The trip was on I-10 all the way (except near Phoenix where they take you around the city rather than through it. I kept the cruise control setting at 90 (don't tell the cops) and I was able to cruise long distances at a time at that speed. Basically, this was a high-speed run. In Tucson I pumped 7.89 gallons, and I had covered 271 miles on that tank. That came to 34.35 mpg. For the return trip I decided to take the more southern I-8 route, and I was really glad I did because the road was just empty most of the time. I also decided to slow down a bit, setting the cruise control to 77 mph (speed limit 75.) I found that the car always stayed about 1 mph less than the cruise control setting, interesting, so I was actually doing 76 mph. I tanked up in Yuma, 6.4 gallons on 251 miles, for 39.39. When I bought this car I gave up my 2008 Corolla with a manual transmission. That Corolla was rated for a max of 39 mpg under ideal conditions. The Prius had just gotten it at a higher speed and with WAY better performance, very nice. Around home my work commute is 25 freeway miles each way and I charge up every night. I can get to work ode and part way home in EV mode, and I am getting a total of about 100 mpg that way. I limit my cruise control to 82 mph. While driving I=8 I found myself in self-driving mode. The car found the lanes nicely and I rested my wrist on my knee, palm up, lightly gripping the wheel for long periods. The cruise control managed the throttle and brake, and I was able to stay vigilant but relaxed, and the automatic windshield wipers did their thing when it rained.

    For efficiency purposes, the charge mode is not useful. Making electricity from petrol is not a good move. I guess the only use case for it is, to use it to charge the battery before a road section meant only for electric drive and you have to charge.

    What trim of the Prius Prime do you have? 46mpg is surprisingly less than I thought. The new prius has double the power of the outgoing model, and MPG seems to have suffered as a result. I am interested in how sport mode compares to HV mode.

      I have the XSE. That test was done under specific driving settings. I have since done some other test, which I will post next week. I got 60 mpg in stop and go freeway traffic. Plus some other surprises. Take a look next week.

      It is an EV with low range (70KM) with zero battery anxiety. It is different than pure hybrid cars. You can run it at highway speed totally on Battery and never use gas engine. And depending on your daily commute within EV range (70km), you can use it as a pure EV and never use gas engine. But it is batter to use engine once in a while to keep it in good shape.

      @@myth-breaker-ww3jh I cannot, there's no range, not enough for me... And I don't want to burn gas, I have photovoltaics installed and I want to use that energy. I would have huge amounts of range anxiety with that car

      @@duffsvids A 2024 Prime in HEV Mode should return far more than 43 mpg. If you start out with a full battery charge and select HEV the milage should be closer to 63 mph. Our Prime gets 50+ miles in EV Mode.

    If you start with a full charge and use hybrid mode exclusively, I’m curious how many miles can you clock on the odometer before the battery is depleted? I’m in a similar situation with no home charging so I’m curious.

      If you start with a full charge (or really, any state of charge), in hybrid mode the battery will never fully discharge. The car will decide what energy source to use "on the fly" and will always devote enough power to the battery to keep it charged. EV mode is different. In that setting, the engine (normally), does not run at all. You are able to drive around 80km (50 miles), on battery alone. Once the battery dies the hybrid system takes over. Very clever. We love our 2024 Prime.
