Mike Donahue draws a troubling parallel between the cult-like recruitment practices of the Evangelical Church and the manipulative tactics of sexual predators. From his early days in Boston to his tumultuous time in Bellevue, Nebraska, and beyond, his story is a raw and honest account of seeking authentic love and purpose amidst life's trials. This podcast and UA-cam channel will be confronting themes of spiritual abuse, sexual abuse, the pursuit of genuine connection, and the transformative power of facing one's past.

Love knows it's own address.
School shootings are becoming more prevelant every year. Mike and Brian discuss the latest shooting that happened in Wisconsin December 16th. Love with conditions attached is not love. As Christians we should be loving with our life and then let that love do its own work. Unfortunately the words Jesus and Christianity conjure up a lot of thoughts that are not necessarily positive in our culture today. We should stop talking and put love to work in our lives.

Not in any way to attack Eileen for not speaking up at the time but it's amazing to me how many of us who I'd say were strong people stayed quiet through that period in our lives.
Thank you Eileen.
RELIGIOUS HYPOCRISY IS NOT COLLOQUIAL HYPOCRISY. IT IS SAYING I BELIEVE BUT IN YOUR HEART YOU DONT. JUST TO SPY OR CAUSE HARM
💦 The Woman at the Well talked about in JOHN Chapter 4. Jesus knew her past, and she knew only the anticipated Messiah could know such things. So she went to tell the people, of Jesus' coming 💕
Always have hated that corporate church jesus thing that churches push.....that they can teach people how to be better to look the part....but true discipleship like that of Peter John and the rest comes from a relationship with Jesus only.

So proud of you and your courage to do this Jen. I’m having quite an emotional response to it. So sad and so angry. I’m so sorry this happened to you and that adults did not take responsibility. I hope for continued healing for you.
This hits home so much! The get it done and then getting in trouble was the story of my life in MC! The worst mistake I ever made in my life was going to that place! I’m still trying to unpack all that happened to me in Rockford
So proud of you Jen. You are our hero today.
Fascinating
I have a family member who worked as an intern at the church you are all familiar with. He was paid $200 a month, and worked probably 60 hours a week. It confirmed for me the abuse this church put so many of us through. I myself constantly had a carrot of “friendship” dangled in front of me by the senior pastor’s wife. It took years, but I finally realized it was simply a means of controlling me. At the point that I decided I wasn’t going to be controlled anymore, and we were going to find a different church-she turned on me so fast I was literally left speechless. I watched so many young people be used and abused-and few of them walk with God anymore. It breaks my heart.

having had a key to the church (building, but no longer) , 1 thought comes to mind listening to this( and your latest vid at this time "naked christian") in many churches todayThere is a man that preaches to have a personal relationship with GOD ( our creator, sustainer and savior. Jn 1) to his congregation , yet most will never be able to have lunch, dinner, much less a freindship with said preacher. Most dont see it, and that cuases confusion internally and creates Pastorial exaltation.that is not good. True community is missing in the church and in the world, true community is so watered down.
Check out the shoe club video that explains the mission and vision that they have up in Michigan. It's really cool! ua-cam.com/video/D-sNA5AfQU8/v-deo.html
This is the briefest explanation of the issues Christians have traditionally had with D&D. Players are supposed to choose a god to worship, and even if pretend, some Christians will assert that doing so is a form of idolatry. The other issue, a holdover from the Satanic panic, was that people felt that pretending to use sorcery/witchcraft and interacting with demons and devils could lead to players becoming involved with Satanism and the occult.
Interesting comment, as Christians often seem to practice their own brands of idolatry, often much more harmful than doing so in a game. The satanic panic lives on as well.
I grew up in the church. Was led by some great pastors. Turned out perfectly fine. My kids are in church, now in their 20's perfectly normal. My children are normal and do not get swayed by the liberal bs. Good luck to all on your journeys.
Congratulations for real! That's awesome that you got to experience that. I'm jealous. Everyone should be treated the way you were but unfortunately that is not the reality that most people live in.
Mike and I affirm there are good churches and good church experiences to be had. I’m glad that is your story.
I never felt like I could talk to my parents about anything because I knew they would judge me. We went to church 2 to 3 times a week when I was a kid. You couldn't pay me to go to church now.
soudns like a you and parent issue. Not the church.
Prayers are Spells.
"rules of the church" have no bearing on my family. We go to a church that lines up with most of what we believe the bible is saying. The churches all seem to have their own rules that don't necessarily line up with the bible, but are more strict than the bible as a way to "protect" people. My issue is that they teach that these things are sins when they are not. The church is essentially trying to create rules that are stricter than God's rules which essentially says they believe they can do a better job than God when it comes to rule making. They need to stick to teaching the downsides of allowing many of these things to drag you into a world of sin, but that these things are not sin in themselves.
I am so grateful for my skeptical semi-practicing Catholic family! My mother was always an enthusiastic supporter of birth control (was even all right with abortion). My father was a bit more devout but quite open-minded. Always open to questions and doubt. My wife's background was a good deal more fundamentalist, although she was never much of a believer herself she still was affected. I have called myself a "none" for some 35 years now.
Humans should only be introduced to religion when they reach 25 years of age.
I agree with you 100% on your concerns with the dogma, rules and regulations, etc. I can particularly relate to the whole bit about alcohol and how people come up with anecdotes to explain away the behavior in biblical times in order to condemn something today (yeah, as if, as you said, there was non-alcoholic wine is Jesus' day... Yeah, right). With that said, I can't help but wonder... where are we going here? I feel a very slippery slope coming on here of tolerance that has infected the modern church. In what's doubtlessly a well-intentioned move away from some of that dogma and the arbitrary rules of religion, I see the church becoming more and more sin tolerant. To me, that is an entirely different thing. I believe that we can maintain a high view of the inerrancy of scripture without being dogmatic. Our views on what is sin do not need to change simply because we're living in an "enlightened" society. To me, that's where the rubber meets the road. So I can't help but wonder (and of course you're under no obligation to answer), but where do you guys fall on contemporary issues facing the church like all this LGBTQ-alphabet soup and all the trans stuff? Is everybody just free to "be themselves" and embrace the way that "God made you" (whatever it is the individual sees that to be?) or is there actually an objective, immutable standard of morality defined in scripture? Apologies if I sound harsh. I really am enjoying the video. Again, I'm just wondering where all of this is going.
Not a problem, welcome the questions. To start with, love over truth, love over rules. There are a lot of hard questions and I personally don’t believe the Bible is about prescriptive answers. When asked about the greatest commandment Jesus said, essentially, love. Love might look different in every situation. Trust your heart, the Jesus in you, and love.
so you were in a cult and abused your kids, thinking you were morally superior. got it
Abraham almost killed his kid believing it was the will of his god, so I guess it could be worse
Thank you Gretchen.
Say it louder for the people in the back. I'm standing up applauding you guys. Watching my former teacher and youth group leader have this humble conversation is freaking amazing and healing. Who could have ever thought back in the 80's that this is the conversation we'd be having?

If you want to yield the determination of “God’s will” for you to another, that is your prerogative. It is my opinion that, while others can offer advice (he did not) or ask questions to help you think through aspects of a decision you may have failed to consider (he did not) I would not, nor would I yield the power to do so to others, assume a position of determining “gods will” for another. I don’t see Jesus doing that. I see Jesus asking people questions, probing, helping them to come to a conclusion. In my particular instance I didn’t need a “call” to go, if I needed a call it would have been to stay. His comments essentially put me in a position where, if I believed he had some special knowledge of gods will (I did not) then I would have necessarily seen myself as going against gods will. That is not friendship or leadership, it is manipulation. I will consideration to the possibility Gary was just doing what he was trained to do, that his comments were not calculated but reflexive. But that does not change my perception, at the time and today, that the comment was out of bounds. He didn’t have to agree with me, but he also didn’t have to make a comment that put my decision against “gods will”.
@@RAC1173 while I understand your point having that conversation in the context of gods will risks presupposing a) one specific option is gods will and b) that someone can know this ephemeral “gods will” for another. I do not understand god that way. Let’s suppose he had our best interest at heart (I doubt that). He may have asked questions, offered options, worked with us. That’s what a good leadership, perhaps that which you described, would do.
@@brianmay7864 just one more reply. Teachers are accountable like pastors are. Did you make a mistake while teaching? I can guarantee every teacher is held to the highest standard like a pastor, and yet they sure aren't always perfect..they sometimes say things they regret or make a poor decision..if they all were real and shared their struggles we would hear that people don't do it right all the time. But looking at the big picture what would we do without them? Do we grind them to powder over a mistake? No unless it is serious.
Something very strange going on here. My name is also Dave My brothers name is also Mike. Even more strange is our last name is Donahue. My brother is 2 years older and ironically we Grow Up in the Catholic church and we also Grow Up in a tough neighborhood of bars and bikarstas. My brother and I also used to fight alot as kids but he always would protect me if some crap went down with other kids or even adult. Wow. What a parallel.
Can you add the name of her book to the comments please? Great podcast

Oh my gosh! Cory had the film/drama idea?!?! I feel like thousands of people need to give you all the credit. What a genius..and also, this is so painful and real…”the get it done..the exhaustion..the opportunity laced with manipulation…”
I wasn't going to be on the podcast, but your episode was really helpful. After I listened to it I told Mike I was in. Thanks for sharing your story!
@@corbyn Man, I'm still unpacking. The amount of talent and gifts that were also roadkill on her (and others) path to the top is still hard for me to wrap my head and heart around.

Hey guys! Crackerback here! Love what you’re doing but have to disagree about the Olympic thing. I think it’s “both and” when referring to what the did and sex trafficking etc grieving the heart of God. They go hand in hand. The sex trafficking started somewhere with unnatural and warped sexual concepts. That would include porn and transsexual just to name a few. So to separate them, in my humble opinion, is not looking at the big picture. I also think that they do want to mock Christ and the traditional symbols of Christianity because their practices are satanic and Christ (and his followers) are his only really enemy. This kind of depiction would never come out against Mohammed. This same concept goes for any of the other parodies that you Googled. However, I think that SOME of those (like Charlie Brown) were actually just depicting the scene like we would with a Nativity scene. Which brings up the question, how would you respond if drag queens depicted the Nativity scene in the same manner? Just curious… what are your thoughts?
Lastly, the last supper thing was only a small part of the whole crap show too. There was so much grotesque, demonic things happening and aimed at and on display for kids. I’m not saying I waved the flag of boycott, but I definitely took offense to it all. Just food for thought.. a discussion among friends., right? 😊not trying to come at yall sideways. lol
Asking questions is a sure fire sign of a trouble maker. I know this well. 😂
Enjoyed the conversation!
Donahue preaching like the old days ....so much of the church has forgotten that Jesus is the king not the pastor.
This was the video for last week but I accidentally left it on unlisted. Sorry about that. Enjoy!
Thank you!!! This means so much to my family!
A system that burns people out. 😢
Wow. Am tracking with her and she is amazing. Thank you.
It's nice to put a face to the name - Mike, I remember you talking about your brother David. David, thank you for sharing with us. It gives a much more complete picture of some things Mike has been vulnerable about. I also really love seeing how much you care for each other right now and how supportive you are of each other. And I agree - I love how genuine and authentic BOTH of you are. It's an interesting dynamic you have and a pleasure and privilege to be able to get to know you both better.
Only 16 minutes in but I am so sorry you were in so much pain Mike. You were such a good youth group leader to us in Bellevue. You were so fun and we all thought you were so cool. I don't know how you were able to manage it all. I really am enjoying your brother's perspective too.
Steve, I really love your message and the way that you speak to people. It's a gift for sure. Brian, as always, your comments are very wise and thank you for sharing. Mike, you're still a goofball and I hope you have fun in Boston.
Respectfully, in context to the discussion, it has taken me 40 years to see the church-not for what she does, but for who she is and to whom she belongs. I conclude that it is the cross of Christ that makes the church lovely.
This issue of complicity is so insidious and ubiquitous in our churches and in our politics. In a time where we have an adjudicated rapist with allegations of sexual assault on children at the top of the ticket running for President of The United States for one of two parties. It all comes from the same vein.
At any venue to include church (sadly) you must maintain a constant state of alertness and situational awareness. The Machiavellian psyche does not knock before it enters. Those who learn to assess and discern quickly don’t get caught off guard-they are the guard. Trust but Verify
I appreciate you guys very much......seems like a lot of folks have forgotten what repentance really is... His words on the person that causes one to fall that itd be better to tie a millstone around his neck and cast him into the sea than to cause one of these to stumble... I appreciate how you along with the holy spirit taught us how to repent when you were in rockford...and can hear that in you now

Mike, I appreciate the conversation that your book creates. Additionally, It is encouraging that you are dedicating your life to supporting teens with seeing and knowing their innate worthiness and value. Innate being the operative word especially in a world that traffics and supports performative worth and value. A very important conversation and much needed distinction especially in a country that says, for you to have access to healthcare you have to earn it through work. Quite perverse. Or, a step further, where a few corporations are in the business of selling water in our grocery stores. It is just quite amazing what we all are willing to allow and be willing to pay for without question. I could list many other examples of what makes worthiness and value be in question consciously and unconsciously. What is scary to me is that when it comes to impoverished people and or those in rural areas, sometimes the church is literally the only mental refuge that people have. And, these megachurches and churches know this and use their own punitive and authoritarian worldview to guilt and shame these people into salvation with the message of burning in hell or be saved. I find it wildly abusive as I see it as broken people enrolling other broken people into endless brokenness. When salvation and mental wellness is graded on financial statements, we really no longer have churches but religious businesses. Just like we don’t really have hospitals, we have healthcare businesses. It is a big conversation and we have to work both sides of the conversation. As having innate worthiness in a world that doesn’t want that can feel like swimming upstream vs. going along with the punitive and authoritarian worldview that is offered. Even as I write this comment the insurmountable topic that I’m addressing cannot be possibly covered in a “comment”. I’ll stop here… I just hope we wake up to seeing how we do us and begin to say no to the real perverse people choosing to manipulate and coerce people with their brokenness vs. shepherding them into new possibilities of wholeness.
I really appreciate your comment chandlerj10. You're right, it's a huge topic but Brian and I are committed to taking a swing at it every week. There are so many people that watch this "church business" from the sidelines and will have nothing to do with it.
