Awesome! Now what's the red tape for?
LOL . . . that radio was installed with several others and the red tape matched the red tape of the assigned coax.
Great to the point video!
Thank you! I can't stand long overdone introductions
Very nice video. I know nearly nothing about birds, but I like them. It looks to me as if the wires holding the pird feeding box used to be a dipole, an EFHW or whatever - well, bird feeding in ham radio operator's style. 😉 (Since I am in to ham radio it feels like I am seeing antennas everywhere ...)
Thank you Daniel. I am new to the hobby and the FTdx10 is my first HF transceiver. Although I have the operations manual in my language (German), such a video is really useful, for example to remind me of what the STEP/MCH button is for - because this is something I was missing when using the device. :)
Thank you, what a great vid!
Great video tutorial Thank you!
Short, clear, concise, tank you! 73 de 2E0HJN 👍🏻🏴
How do you look the Transmit button..
Good video. You only showed some highlights of what the radio can do, but what you showed is very informative. I had some questions before I watched you video and you actually answered all of my questions. I have the FT-710 now but I think I am going to upgrade to the 10 shortly. Nice video and nice radio. Barry, KU3X
TY. I also like the FT-710. It doesn't have the analogue front end like the FTdx-10 (so you can't put in a CW filter for example) but it's a great rig as well. Can't go wrong either way in my opinion. Cheers, Dan
very relaxing!
I think ten tech started losing their passion after the Omni six
First licensed in 1969 and after being away from HR for over ten years, in 1998 I bought a used TS-940 which had been introduced in 1985 because it resembled the traditional superhet large radio design. Now fully retired in 2024, Im looking at the used 2012 rigs like the IC-7600, FTDX-3000 etc but for similar money the FTDX-10 outperforms them and the visual display blows them away. May just go overboard and buy one of each!
Excellent review of the Jupiter. You have a great voice for the phone bands!
very useful video, just got this radio given spent some money on a new battery and charger , your video spurred me on to get to grips with the radio manually... thanks very much Der G1GDB
Glad it helped!

The IC-718 is a decent radio, but I found it a bit complicated. I don't like radios with menus, radios that need to be programmed, and radios with buttons, switches, and knobs that do more than one thing. I recently bought a 30 year old IC-728 from its original owner, and like it much better. The receive is definitely better, the 728 has a triple conversion receiver, while the 718 has a double conversion receiver. The 728 also has much better audio. While not a tube radio, the 728 is much closer to the performance of a tube radio than the 718. They just don't make radios like they used to.
Agree. For me, I'd still go with old school rigs. It's much easier to use. When the DSP of modern radios bogs down, you're done. It'll be an expensive fix. And besides, thousands of dollar or cheap but in very good condition 30 - 40 year old radios just have the very same frequencies which all that matters to communicate. By the way, I have the IC-735.
I got this baby when Japanese money was down for 500 USD brand new. I just got it out after years in the closet and the dial had corroded otherwise work great and this is the only $500 radio I know of with all the features of the big guys and none of the throat=choking costs. I am putting at low power on FT-8......... Note it's power output reading is representative -- not a measurement, so 40 watts would be about 45 watts on the meter.... "H" for high power indicates 100 w. input.
Very good informitive video
Just go into the 897 with a FC30 on...
Beautiful birds and we really love your set-up, lovely video😊👏👏👏
Thank you very much!

Danial what is a good antenna to run with the FT897 with auto tuner.or Mobil unit for travel.
I like the Yeasu ATAS 120 . . . works great for 40 meters on up
Aku punya itu
Thanks for this! BTW, if you get a B0001 error at power up, it means it is in Service Mode. To get back to user mode, with the HT off, press and hold the VFO button and power back on. Voila, you're back to user mode.
Excellent video Daniel, no flashy showmanship, just get to the meat of the subject, so refreshing!
That means a lot to me. . . I just get so tired of overdone productions . . . do away with the fluff and I'll never ask anyone to "Like and Subscribe!"
Thank you for this informative video. My FT-1900 has no receive audio...did *all* reset and reprogrammed for local repeaters, still no audio. Got frustrated and went out and purchased a new 2980 that was on clearance from AES before they went out of business. My FT-1500M is dedicated to mobile use because it is so rugged and resists heat from the sun in the summer(I keep it in the shade). I searched the internet looking for help with this no receive audio with no luck...just gets tons of other brands and models but nothing on the 1900...grrr...smh
Interesting. . . I'm not sure what would cause that issue. Is there any white noise when the squelch is turned off?
What is the output power vs. FT-7900R
50W
Are the buttons backlight
No
I have an icom-7300. I just recently bought the dx10. I love it. Don't get me wrong, the 7300 has a lot to love as well. It's nice to have them both.
Thank you for the tutorial! Will there be any more where this transceiver is concerned please? Duane, UK
Hi Duane, I have no plans to publish more video on this rig presently. Thanks for the note!
Greetings, I have the same radio and the only question I have is about the wires X function, it's in my car can I talk through wires ex on his radio or do I need to have a node hooked for it to work? I'm wanting to venture out into other modes and features I haven't played with that feature yet.
I've never used the WIRES function. I hear it's very popular in Japan. I believe you would need their hardware node for it to connect to the internet. Have fun!
Thanks much. Question: Does it have any dedicated RF filters for CW and SSB?
You can add one crystal filter; Narrow band SSB or CW. I've found them on Ebay.
Mr Daniel, I watched your video. Thanks a lot for the demos. I have a radio just like this one that was kept in the box since I bought it. About 10 years. Now I decided to install it. It's working. The problem is that he has a configuration that I could not reset. I need to operate at 161070 mghz. This is the channel. At this frequency, when I activate the PTT, the message ERROR appears on the dial. How can I release this channel so that I can communicate normally on the frequency I mentioned?
Hi there. The FT-1900 is made for the amateur radio frequencies only. Although it can receive outside of the ham bands to some degree it's not programmed to transmit outside of its designed application. I hope that helps :)
@@danielgoodson2644 I had no idea about it. I'll probably change equipment. thank you very much for letting me know about this.
this is my first radio station, i just bought it and i started the classes for my licence, thx for the video ^ ^
Have fun!
This was/is a very popular radio. Nice job...73!
Great upload, Daniel! I just purchased a used FT-897D tonight, and I am so looking forward to using it for POTA and ARES activities in the near future. 73 de K5WIX.
Cool! It's the Swiss army knife of radios!
I have some channels I want to delete but I cannot figure out how to delete the channel, thus it stops all the time on a digital station everytime I scan. It's a FT-1900. Can anyone help?
Thanks for the video!
YW!
Can anyone tell me why when I turn on the ATT, the signals go UP in level? I thought when ATT was on the screen, that meant the attenuator was on, which should lower the signals . I am so confused.
The ATT problem is because static or lightning has blown some of the front end diodes. It needs to be returned for repair.
Why does yours have a red colored tab to to left of the menu screen , and another above and to the left of freq dial ?
Oh, that was a club rig and I used the tape to correlate the rig with the correct coax lines (color coordinated ;)
@@danielgoodson2644 Oh ,, ok thanks I thought mine was missing something. I bought it a couple years ago , finally hooked an antenna to it today and worked some 10 meter 👍. I really like it
Is there not a fast access for the power level other than what you shown ? tnx
Yes, you can program to power level to one of the three short cut memories. You'll still have to scroll to the shortcut page but it's perhaps a little faster
Brand new Ham here. Does this radio require an external power supply? What antenna would you recommend for this? Thanks so much for any insight.
What an excellent tutorial! Thank you.
I love my FT-7900
Rediscovering my FT-897D! I "rediscovered" my FT-897(D) just in the past few days. I had to have surgery recently, and before I went, I brought up my not often used FT-897 from the basement shack and put it in my spare room here. I was told I wouldn't be able to traverse stairs was the reason. Well, lo and behold, in my newly founded idle time I am discovering many facets of the radio that I was not aware of! Checking various articles on UA-cam or online is giving me new insight into the radio. My "main" go to radios are the ever popular IC-7300 and it's vhf/uhf counterpart the 9700. Going thru the menu and settings, I found things to adjust that I didn't know I could! I had plans to replace the radio with the 991A but now decided to put that money towards a hex beam and keep the 897D, truly a "shack in the box". I'm amazed at the build quality of the radio, a tank! I ran a quick extension coax from my End Fed Half Wave antenna up to the spare room and with the YT-100 LDG auto tuner I can get on all bands. I even plan to get into the ARRL SSB contest this weekend. So, the FT-897D will stay here in the spare room as my upstairs "100 watt and a wire" quick go to radio, but once recuperated, I'll return to the shack with the Icoms and Ameritron amplifier, satellite capability etc... Up to now, the main purpose of the FT-897D was to accompany me on my numerous camping trips where it never failed me. My only complaint, I replaced the internal rechargable batteries with new Chinese ones that already went south. Has anybody come up with a d-i-y battery bank?
Great video. I have one but I can’t hear anything!!! Speaker on rig, headphones, or external speaker. You know how to reset cause I can’t find that either. Audio says 100%
Ceramic Filter may have failed!
@@mewrongwayKOCXF If it is like the Pegasus, it may have the fuzzy BPF relays. If that is the case, they need replacement.
I've had one of these rigs with the 897 tuner for years and I never knew that you could bypass and reengage the tuner by pressing the tune button once. I learned something new. Thanks Dan.
Nice rig, drawback is no rec ant input
The buttons are tight around the dial but you can easily lock the freq. knob if you're prone to fat finger it.😁 You get used to it over time so it's really not a deal breaker.
