We are a small, family owned independent auto repair shop in Buffalo, New York. Our focus is on quality repair work, and bringing honesty and integrity to every single conversation and transaction with our customers. We do all sorts of work, and love the new challenges every day brings.
Put your tools away and make some delicious food.
Here's something a little different: a cooking video! What does this have to do with auto repair? Absolutely nothing. Sometimes you've got to take a break from work. Family and tacos are far better than auto repair, hands down.

Should you fix your air conditioning? Can it wait? Here's something to consider:

I recorded this last summer, but it bears repeating. Your air conditioning system is broken, and you're probably deciding whether you should bite the bullet and do the repairs, or if it can be put off for a while. Here's some info. that most people may not be aware of.

PROJECT CAR UPDATE
Переглядів 1264 роки тому
Just wanted to take a few minutes to explain a little bit about these cars, many people ask about them and here are some answers.
Great video. Thanks for taking you time to expaln the process
There are spacer washers behind the bolt on the clutch. I've repaired 2 of our Subarus (2014 Impreza and a 2016 Crosstrek) doing the same thing by removing one of the spacers, which allows the clutch plate to be close enough to the electromagnetic switch to engage it when it receives current from the a/c relay. You do not need to pull the clutch or remove the belt, just pull the bolt and carefully catch the spacers behind the bolt. Might not work everytime, but it worked on our 2 Subies.
Good info. especially for someone working on their own car! It's a hard thing to try to back with a warranty in a retail shop, but I agree with you there's a strong possibility this can be an adjustment of that gap that may work for some time. Good stuff.
Mines doing the same thing! sadly I bought the car used in the winter so never considered testing the A/C, until it got hot, then, it would start out cold, and like in this video, compressor would kick off and it would get warmer. To add insult to injury, shortly after, only fan speed 2 works, 1, 3 and 4, fan doesn't come on. Assuming worst case scenario, new compressor and fan switch or something, labor, what am I looking at ballpark in terms of price?
@@Denspion there are a couple parts to that answer. Just off the top of my head you are probably looking at something around $1000-$1500. Most places are going to want to replace the expansion device and the receiver dryer. This is to maintain the warranty on the new compressor. So it's not just as simple as replacing the compressor. Of course you can put one on there with a used one, but you are not going to have any kind of warranty.and who knows how long that will last. Blower problem is more likely a resistor. This might only be $200 or so.
What was the final bill total?? 🤔
My first time seeing your ac videos and you are very thorough and what I like most is your honesty.
Excellent
I just went through this job on my 16 frontier S with 2.5l. My positive post had a cap on it. Never could tighten it up. After cleaning up battery; 4 yrs. old I charged up with cell caps off. 1 cell was almost dry. Same problem with hold down. Used scrap rubber pcs. Cleaned up every ground locations I could find. This all started with a dead alternator. Got 1 from Wilbert's. Learned my lesson. Excellent video.
Sound cut out at 10:23. Probably no big deal, but was hoping to glean everything possible as I research the same problem with my 2006 Sportage. Nice to get the visuals of everything.
Good job owning up. I know this is an old vid. I have an '05 Sorento from hell. The Accessory fuse pops. Gee what turns on with that monster. There a fuse box behind the fuse box in the drivers kick panel and none are labeled but there is a lot of fuses and connectors. No idea where to start on this thing.
This video shows what is wrong with mechanics today. This job takes an idiot an hour to do with minimal tools and a few scratches on your hand. What a waste of money for this poor customer. Probably charged them 1200 for a 200 job. Pathetic.
If it’s not this it is the ac relay I tore my whole dash up just for this little fix if ur windows don’t work and your ac fuze keeps blowing unplug the ac relay and put a fuse in the ac to check
Good work diagnosing and your presentation was A+++
My problems on 06 Sportage is the blower won't shut off. It's sick on high.
If you are experiencing it working in only a single speed, it's most likely the blower motor resistor, which changes the amount of power that is sent to the blower motor.
Somewhat helpful but please wear gloves and eye protection 😅
He says to fix the headlight is to tape a flashlight to the fender.
Is there anything I’ll have to do after replacing the battery?? Just installed a new battery on my Frontier and still, cranking fast, but not starting.
Not likely, it seems like you may have another issue.
@@BCChris I used it in the morning, got back home, about 30 mins later it didn’t wanted to start. Took the battery out, Auto Zone said it was bad, got a new one, replaced it and still not starting. It cranks, but no start. Put an OBD2 reader and it gave me a P0603 code.
That trouble code indicates an internal problem with the PCM. I think this one needs to be looked at by a competent repair shop.
2018 Chevy Tahoe. We have been dealing with similar issue for over a year, 6k total at dealerships, had evap core and all doors replaced. Ac blows too cold, both front sides dual climate controls, little to no heat unless maxed out. Gets so cold evap core freezes up and air cant flow, turm of ac and after a few minutes air flows like it should. And toxic smell as well from vents, rear ac good still. It all started with the cabin air filter being changed. Any advice, im not sure it the ac heat actuators were changed or if it was just all the blend doors actuators.
How did you get that bolt off. I cannot get the bolt to break free
what could it be if both sides are not blowing cold at all.. but if you turn the controls to hot both sides will blow hot..checked the compressor n its kicking on just fine..also checked the freon n its full..
First thing I would do is connect manifold gauges to the system and observe the pressures while the a/c is running. THis would tell us if the system is operating properly and has the ability to make cold air. From there we could determine if there's some kind of air distribution problem.
You don’t need to pull the whole dash apart. That’s doing too much. Removing the glove box, two modules behind the glove box, and one more module to the right of the actuator and you can get to the module.
☺️ 'PromoSM'
I read somewhere, where you pull the fuse for the HVAC. And let it sit for a couple minutes with the fuse unplugged, and reinstall the fuse power up the car and turn the controller from hot to cold to reset the blend door. Doesn’t always work but worth a shot.
Yes some systems kind of lose their memory for where these door actuators are supposed to be in their travel. Resetting them can sometimes work. This one was deceased, though!
so i did this on my 04 chevy truck and the driver side is 8 dg higher than the passenger? what next? driver gets about 50 and the pass gets about 42?
Great video. Thank you
The most low key relaxing cooking show I've ever seen. I got a Blackstone for my birthday. May need to bust it out and make these. They look delicious.
Sound advice.
Wpuld this cause the headlight not to work also
Nice video. I have a 2016 frontier n I had corrosion in the same spot. Did baking soda n water. I may get those sprays u used.
There's nothing wrong with his actuator.
You tested it?
I reset the actuator and it worked for three months and just recently when I hit the brakes hard and only once the air was hot through the driver side vents. I parked and restarted and it works again. I still have the replacement part if it needs replacement. It's still working good for now.
@@omahanb1how do I reset my actuator? My 15 tahoe passenger side blows colder air than driver?
@@Quinton0520 ua-cam.com/video/gFsHHcpAzPY/v-deo.htmlsi=VbAfLa6J5HluEKFD this is the best example of how I fixed my 2004 Silverado there are several others but this is the easiest to follow.
I just> reset my actuators < using other UA-cam videos and it fixed my 2004 Silverado without having to remove anything. The right side was cold and the left was hot before . It took 10 minutes. Try it first I now own a spare actuator I might never need. This is a common error caused by the computer. Search UA-cam save a large bill for nothing !
I have the same problem. What is the connector called and where could I find it?
Not sure what number it was, but it's on the wiring diagram. Best thing to do in this case would be to find a not-so-rusty donor car and harvest the connectors you need from there.
Thank you, the video was really helpful. You explain all in detail.
I have a 2014 Subaru Impreza 5-door doing the exact same thing, even tapped it with a screwdriver and it re engaged for a little bit. Would you recommend getting another OEM one or aftermarket? Also would swapping compressors be a job you can do yourself? I do most of my own work but never messed with A/C's before. Thank you for this video!
I generally use aftermarket compressors, they actually have better warranties then the original equipment ones do. That being said, supply chains seem to surprise us in different ways from day to day. If you do your own work, I am sure you can handle physically swapping the compressor. There are some important things to note, however. Like making sure the proper amount of refrigerant oil is in the system. That’s some thing that has to be addressed for the system to be reliable in the long run. And of course you need a professional to recover, evacuate, and recharge the system. Don’t be the guy who vents the refrigerant to the atmosphere just to save a few dollars. This is not in an expensive job, so I can certainly understand your desire to try to save some money. But if it’s over your head, let a pro do it for sure. Thank you for watching.
@@BCChris Thank you! I'll take it to someone but buy the compressor myself.
I just did one at my shop on 2015 silverado driver blowing hot and blend actuator is to left behind glove boxes have to remove two modules and a bracket and reach in to left like behind radio. Job took 45 mins to 1hr. And customer was shocked because he was quoted for dash removal with ticket of almost 1,100 dollars and I done it for 80.00 labor and he bought part.
Older chevy is under dash on driver side and some newer are under dash at transmission tunnel and other are back behind airbags and those take patience!
good job
Way to rip off your customers. Pull the glove box and 2 modules then u can reach it.
What an ignorant comment. Why on earth would we do this much work, and record it, if it was unnecessary?
@@bcautomotive7933 I have a suburban 2016 front ac blows warm and back blows cold there's no leaks an refrigerant is full, what actuator would that be? I sometimes hear a clicking/cracking noise coming from the dashboard.
@@bcautomotive7933 That WAS an ignorant comment. However, he is right about reaching it from behind the glove box without having to remove the whole dash, as all “the books” will recommend. The blend door actuator in these 2014-2019 Tahoe’s and Suburban’s can be replaced in about 1.5 hours, even less if your hands and arms aren’t as big as mine. That previous comment was made by someone who hates everyone, including himself. So he assumed, wrongfully, that you were doing the extra work to create revenue. But, obviously, who would ever take on the liability of removing and tampering with all those high dollar modules and dash panels if they thought it could be done easier. You did what “the books” say to do. Nothing wrong with that. Just know for the future, in this case, “the books” have a poor recommendation for this replacement. Good luck to you! Don’t let those jerks get you down…

Yes I did. After I called and spoke the guys that make these videos at BC Auto I took hes advice and researched a Machanic that properly uses a scan machine and was an adjustment through the comp to the actuator a $150 and done. Thanks BC Auto.

1. You replaced the battery with the same physical size battery ... Group size 35. You did not re-install the plastic corrugated thermal box shaped 'blanket'. 2. The Die Hard Gold, group size 35, produces 640 cold cranking amps. 3. The battery tray and area of its' location easily accepts a group 24 f size battery. In the Die Hard Gold, that size produces 750 cold cranking amps. This would be the size battery of choice if not re-using the thermal box. 3. The battery hold-down brackets, the plastic tray removed (clean metal mounting plate under plastic tray and anti-corrosion applied ) re-install plastic tray, the fuse block positive terminal ( remove, clean and reinstall wires at bolt location at underside ) should have been anti-corrosion spray applied along with cleaning. In conclusion: A larger size battery would have benefited the truck owner. More power in cold cranking amps, and a greater reserve capacity. Nissan installed a physically smaller and lower capacity battery for at least two reasons: a) weight savings for a better gas mileage b. cost savings for a cheaper battery ( plastic thermal box blanket is cheaper than larger lead acid battery. The Frontier used to come with the 24 f size battery at the same mounting location. The "Bean" counters saved money with the cheaper battery and plastic box. Hope this helps
Super helpful video with good breakdown and detail.
best one on UA-cam.
I have a question about the Kia
It's good to someone honest.I done a 2013 Gmc and pulled the rt pockets and replaced.
What type of scanner you are using i need one like that
Snap On Zeus
What does something like that cost
Depends on how accessible the actuator is, but I think this one was billed for about 3 or 4 hours plus the part. Most of these actuators are under $100.

I have the same problem with my 2014 Chevy Silverado. I remove the 2 glovebox door and remove modules and brackets, and reach my hand and remove screws and replace the part . It took about 40mins. Beats removing The Whole dash.
Yours was way easier
I just did the same thing, no reason to take the whole dash off
So did your blow just not really cold and I can see that my blend actuator is moving , do you still think if I replace it that will fix my ?
Hey when you pull the plug on the ecm, and other module do they have to be recalibrate with a scan tool?
He has a shop so he’d rather charge to remove everything seeing the truck dissembled would justified the price 💴 my guess lol
The customer can at least celebrate that he does not require the huge flush procedure that a toasted compressor requires when the problem is beyond the clutch and the whole system is full of metal.
This is very true. It could almost always be worse! Thankfully, those compressor issues are rare, especially if the system is well maintained. Fix small problems before they turn into big ones.
Good job!
Thanks!
