Springtime Railfanning in Ontario in March 2020 - GEXR, OSR, CN, and CP
Sometimes, it's amazing to think how much things can change in the span of only a couple years. This video, shot on Saturday, March, 20, 2020, is about four years old at time of upload (usually, it takes me a while to get to things...), but in that time quite a bit has changed on the railroads that were filmed on this day.
Starting the day in Stratford, my brother and I set out to follow the Goderich-Exeter railway, which at that time was running pretty much every day. On this day, 581 would work west on the Goderich sub to Clinton Junction, then south on the Exeter spur to Hensall; service on the Exeter spur was commonly Wednesday-Saturday at this time, but recently is more like once a week with no traffic south of Hensall anymore. These days, the railway runs much more sporadically, and GP40 RLK #4095 went into the news for all the wrong reasons during a runaway derailment in Goderich the following February. Still, like a cat with nine lives, it survived and currently operates out of Garnet on another G&W operation, Southern Ontario Railway.
After shooting GEXR, the plan was to head to Woodstock to find OSR as they were commonly running on weekends at the time (not the case now). Along the way we shot CP loaded ethanol train #650 at Zorra, the site of a large St. Marys Cement plant. These days, the train still runs but is numbered 528 (on CPKC, not CP!), and the old conveyor bridge across the tracks at Zorra has been removed.
Sure enough, OSR's Woodstock job was working at Woodstock with FP9Au #6508 and GP9u #8235. At the time, the F-units in regular service was common but in 2024, the units are pretty much only used for plow runs or office car specials. We chased the job lite-engine back to Ingersoll, where they would lift a long string of outbound loaded autoracks destined for a CN connection at Beachville. At the time, CAMI was running two shifts building the Chevy Equinox, but that ended in April 2022; at the time of uploading, the plant builds the "Brightdrop" EV delivery vans, but nothing goes out by rail. The plant still gets about 10 cars/day of inbound loads for local distribution, but whether it ever ships anything out by rail again is very much in doubt.
After finishing up with OSR, on our way home we caught CN 435, the daily Toronto-London train, at Paris wrapping up a pretty good day of railfanning in southwestern Ontario.
As always, thank you for watching!

CPKC Final Spike Tour - CP 2816 Across the Canadian Prairies, Part 1

Given the modern, bottom-line-driven corporate attitude of today's class 1 railroads, it seemed improbable that a second major North American railroad would sponsor a corporate steam program given the associated costs. Yet, in spite of the challenges, CPKC restored the railway's magnificent H-1-b 4-6-4 #2816 to operation in celebration of the completion of the CP-KCS merger. When it was announc...
Summer Railfanning with GIO/Trillium Railway (LDSX 7920)
Переглядів 5795 місяців тому
The first half of this year has been extremely busy for me and I have not had much time for railfanning, but I did manage to get away on a sunny Friday recently to spend some time on the Trillium Railway. It's been about a year since I last did any railfanning in the Niagara area so this was somewhat of a scouting run, to see what had changed over the last few months. Trillium Railway, operated...
Cold Starting an Alco 12-251

A few weeks ago, a unique opportunity presented itself when Trillium Railway made their last trip to St. Catharines to switch two remaining customers on the Grantham spur. The locomotive for this trip, TR RS-18u #1859, developed an oil leak the previous day and this resulted in the train tying down on the spur pending repairs to the unit. The following day was clear but cold and this allowed fo...
CN Milton Logistics Hub Construction Update February 2024
Переглядів 85710 місяців тому
Returning to the construction site of CN's Milton Logistics Hub just over a year from my first update, a rare bit of sunshine this winter finds that significant progress has been made so far on the project. In this update we find that CN is now using the new main track alignment for the Halton sub around the property where the Logistics Hub pad tracks will be located. This has been expedited, n...
CN Locals in Southern Ontario Summer 2022
Переглядів 30211 місяців тому
I haven't done a 'pure-CN' video in a while but CN in the last few years in southern Ontario hasn't been all that interesting, so I thought I'd take a look at some local trains which tend to be much more interesting. Whereas mainline freights are dominated by Gevo's these days, with the odd run-through power, CN's locals usually have something good for power. In 2023 CN leased several BNSF unit...

In the summer of 2023, I spent two weeks in Alberta and British Columbia, partly with family and partly for railfanning. After a shorter trip to Alberta last year, I wanted to go back and carry out a more extensive railfan trip through the Rocky mountains and into the Thompson and Fraser river canyons. This video is the first part of a series from this trip and will cover a day spent on CPKC's ...
OSR Move Part II: Kitchener to London on CN L568 || September 25, 2020
Переглядів 835Рік тому
Back in September 2020, OSR faced the challenge of moving their equipment from the recently-ended operation on the Guelph Jct Railway (upon GEXR takeover) to home base at Salford, Ontario. Though only about 50 miles apart as the crow flies, the rail route that would be required to connect the equipment with the railway's own line west of Woodstock would be almost three times that distance and w...
Canadian Prairie Railroading Part II: Chasing Southern Rails Around Moose Jaw, SK Sept-2022
Переглядів 237Рік тому
My railfanning trip to the Canadian prairies in September 2022 was primarily aimed at CP, and to a lesser extent, CN, however I did manage to get a bit of shortline railroading action as well, even if it was a bit unplanned. My goal for this day was to spend the morning on the 4th Ave bridge over CP' s Moose Jaw yard and just shoot whatever I could, but as I was taking some photographs of the d...
Chasing CPKC 133 with SD70ACu #7020 Summer 2023
Переглядів 139Рік тому
It took more than two years, but I finally managed to catch the final of CP's five military-painted SD70ACu locomotives. When I heard that Montreal-Chicago intermodal train #133 had not only this engine, but a KCS unit trailing, I was excited and hoped that the train would not stick to the scheduled pre-dawn timing down the Hamilton sub. Sure enough, the train was sufficiently late that I could...
CN Milton Logistics Hub Construction Update September 2023

This is a follow-up to my previous video from January 2023 to document the construction progress made during the summer on CN's Milton Logistics Hub located at about mile 40 on the Halton sub, west of the metro Toronto area. This facility will be the third intermodal terminal in the Toronto area operated by CN in addition to Brampton Intermodal Terminal (main Toronto-area facility) and Malport....
Railfanning CN 148 w/ AC44C6M #3309 and Business Cars (Twice!) - Summer 2023

Recently, CN has sent three of their business cars and AC44C6M #3309 to Halifax on two separate occasions only a few weeks apart. Both trips through southern Ontario occurred on Saturdays and I was able to catch the exec cars both times in good weather; also, both trains had SD70M-2's leading. The first time was interesting, as this move is something not seen everyday, but this was even more in...

In September 2022, I spent a week railfanning on the Canadian prairies primarily in Saskatchewan but going as far east as Portage la Prairie, MB. Mid-day I headed west toward Saskatchewan and managed to spend the...
Railfanning on CPKC's Mactier Sub 6/04/2023
Переглядів 526Рік тому
Being from southern Ontario, anything north of Toronto to me is "up north"; I don't get up that way too often, but a model train show in the area and a nice warm sunny day convinced me and my brother to spend the day trackside along CPKC's Mactier sub, which runs from Toronto (Osler) 127 miles north to its' namesake town. We started the day at CPKC's Vaughan Intermodal Terminal, the railway's m...

Following the recent mass shipment of retired CN Dash-8's to Trillium Railway for delivery to SLM Recycling in Welland, I wanted to make another trip down to the area to see if I could catch the shortline moving some of the engines around. I lucked out on the Saturday following my last video as Trillium was using RS-18u #1859 to carry out the days' work. It had been a while since I was down to ...

Chasing CN L568 Through the Fall Colours - October 22, 2022
Sad day
From what I've read, last week, the rails in Courtland are being torn up, so now I'm guessing (maybe around) county road 59 will now be the "end of the line" (as the former was Fernlea Road).
Unfortunately GIO Rail abandoned it St Catherine's customers who want to keep services
You can really hear the engine trying to say: Piss off, let me rest! With each stroke that doesnt fire.
I was at Aldershot when I saw 1867!!!!
This week OSR lifted a special extra tall autorack from CP to test loading bright drops. Potentially good news for OSR if the tests prove successful and they can start exporting bright drops by rail!
Was that Olean NY to Emporium PA ? Thanks for the video!
The Heavy Smoke is a Common Alco Thing
Epic video 🚂✨🔝👍🏼💯

I like that gravity move at the end to get the SW7 at the head end.
Throw some ether at it!
Even thou watching the video was choppy to watch but fantastic footage with beautiful weather well done !
A couple barns are still left!
Nice video of G.I.O rail
Awesome video and footage
Terrific video !! Your shooting locations were superb choices. You managed to make excellent use of many lineside industrial structures which (IMHO) makes all the difference. Can you tell me whether this is a daily run to Goderich and back ? And maybe what time the crew comes on duty in the am at Stratford ? Thanks a lot. James.
GIO should put gates at the hwy 3 crossing
Great catches awesome chase and nice video
13:11 Farley strong WRRS mechanical bell
This was a great capture. Tell me this R.R. IS still in business. God, I just love these Alcos. So sick. . . R.
Maybe GIO will be receiving the LDSX2001 (GP38)
SUPER good Video👍Thumbs Up 👍Best Greetings😀
Love diesel. Great shot of this start. Joe I give u sub.
White exhaust smoke in diesel engines is always a sign of increased moisture that evaporates. Or it is simply the water vapour produced during the combustion of hydrocarbons and condensed immediately under operating temperature on cold days.
Um.. No not really.. Its incomplete combustion of the fuel.. That much moisture in that it would be locked up
@@disorderlyconduct6011 In the event of incomplete combustion in diesel engines, rust is produced. And this usually turns the smoke black. Therefore, white smoke cannot be incomplete combustion.
@@karstendoerr5378 only when it runs on unicorn pee
@@disorderlyconduct6011 So in my training as a car mechanic, I learned that black smoke in diesel indicates incomplete combustion. So it's different in America from the rest of the world.
@@karstendoerr5378 white smoke is unburned vaporized diesel.
2 cans of happy juice and full fuel she would have fired first shot lol
Or been blown to smithereens?
@@MoonwolfeConsulting 🤣 nah .. Not if you know how to do it
It has to warm up first, or piston and cylinder damage will occur. Another to get it going more quickly is to turn it over with the fuel pump turned off to preheat the cylinders with the compression.
Looks like a DPF Toyota!
Is the white smoke water vapor?
No, it is unburned Diesel fuel. Also known as "cold smoke".
Got out the 'ol liquid glow plugs! :-)
They don't have glow plugs. Direct injection
@@strobx1 liquid = starting fluid
@@strobx1 Direct injection Diesel engines can have glowplugs. My car is DI and it has glowplugs. But I understand why railroads don't use them (one more complication to go wrong).
@@bartholomausallen883 Your engine has a prechamber that heats the air to the point where the fuel will ignite. All big diesel engines that I am away of do not have glow plugs.
Need one really big can of Cosby sauce 👍👍👌👌
Nice work. We used to get these 1800s up in Havelock all the time back in the day
Havelock as in Lincoln Nebr
There's something very Miyazaki about a solo red, rusty, old loco moving around through the grass quietly pulling a half a dozen cars under white fluffy clouds.
That all gone now
Nice work Peter!
Great Catches
This is a fantastic video. Switching videos are the best
😢
Thank you very much!!
Good work!
should totaly come by and see the sumas sub near the washington border
Bet you wish you could have stayed a day or two longer!
Thanks for the great coverage! Nice to see a woman brakeman at Moyie. Is that the old CPR water tower in Cranbrook at the far left of the first scene?
What is that Old Saying? "If it ain't Broke, Don't Fix it?" Yeah, that phrase should be taught to ALL railroad companies. Why may you ask? So that they can understand that even "Old and Outdated" units can still be utilized for modern day operations. Companies like Amtrak are Harshly guilty in this. They should have been taught that they should take Units that don't work properly, and get them fixed so they do work properly, so that, in the future, they could be preserved and have the potential to be utilized again. I call it, preserving some of the past to Prepare for the Future.
Thanks very much for capturing this unique railway operation on video. It was featured in Branchline magazine a few years ago but video sure beats still photos. I like the grade and especially the side-of-street running, not to mention your fine captions.
This is great to see this kind of operation. Like it. Awesome video too! ;)
Just wondering. Is this port colborne?
Yes, part of the video is around Feeder and Dain City, but most of it is in Port Colborne (Robin Hood elevator is east of Elm St.)
Outstanding video!! Great use of trackside and drone shots provide an excellent example of rural branchline railroading. Thanks a lot for filming and sharing this.
Do you know which date was this?
Oops, forgot to add this... 7/14/2023.
