Spotted this bee at the garden centre today - does anyone know what kind it is?

Mason bees! This is our first successful year of raising native mason bees from cocoons. This video captures a female mason bee flying in and out of various holes - likely laying eggs, placing pollen or nectar, or building mud walls between the rows of eggs.

Salmon return to spawn in Still Creek for a third year in a row! Three chum salmon were spotted just west of Gilmore Ave in Burnaby. When the one female turns on her side and flaps her tail she is preparing a nest (called a "redd") - she does this to clear out the fine sediment from the gravel stream bottom, and to create a shallow depression for her eggs.
