You know the bum is bigger at the back. To get a nice fitted dress you need the cross bum/hip measurement which is the back of your bum. To get the cross hip/bum, I will suggest you put on a trouser. This will serve as a guide for you and you will be able to get what you need with the lines by the side of the trouser. Your focus is the back of your bum. Now take your tape rule, place it on the hip at the right line side of the trouser you have on measure it across to the left line side of that trouser. Please make sure the tape rule is resting on the fuller part of the bum at the back now measure what you have gives you the across bum measurement. I hope this helps.

@@Maha-gb3bz Yes it is to create a more defined waistline. Normally I would I have inputted the actual waist measurement after subtracting the 3 inches for snatching. Actual waist is 29 Snatching by 3 Total 26. 26/4 is 6.5. I would have just inputted this, connect the lines by the side and input a style line on the pattern. Now, what I did in the tutorial was to input the actual waist measurement. Snatching is by 3inches divided by 4 is 0.75, sharing it on the front and back pattern. So I inputted a new style line on the pattern to snatch the waist by 0.75 which you will divide by 2 and mark the measurements on both sides.

@@tomi_clothing I understand now! But how do we calculate the length of this dart from the top and bottom? I know the measurement and length of the main dart, but how do we determine the length of the additional dart and where it should end?

To get the across bust, the customer should stand straight and the arms by the sides just like you are STANDING AT ATTENTION. You know when you want to take the full bust measurement customer will lift their arms a little for the tape rule to go round all through to the back. In this case you won’t be doing that, now the arms are resting on the body. Take your tape and measure the across bust from the inner right side of the arm (where your armpit is) take it across to the inner left side of the arm, make sure the tape rule is resting the fuller part of the breast now you have your across bust.
