Whisky Vlog | Glendronach Distillery Quick Visit & Hand Filled 13 Year Single Cask Oloroso Tasting
Something a little bit different for you guys today...I was feeling spontaneous and it is a gorgeous day so decided to visit the Glendronach distillery as it is only 25 miles from where I live. If you do decide to visit this part of Scotland I highly recommend you hire a car. The scenery is breathtaking but beware of Sat Nav as it will take you down all the country roads. To be fair I hardly saw a car for miles so no real problem.
Also, I ended up getting one of their handfill bottles that I do recommend you get if you visit the distillery. This particular handfill is a 13 year old which has overtaken a 12 year old - the website still says the 12 year old is available, however this sister cask 13 is what is available right now. They also have a 9 year old but for me the 13 year old had a better nose, and on tasting it I am glad I chose the 13. A previous handfill I got in 2019 was quite alcoholic but this one shows great promise on the palate as it is far more smooth even at over 58% ABV. I will do a proper review in a few months once the spirit has had some time in the bottle. Anyway, hope you enjoy the video guys :) Hopefully I can get more handfills from other distilleries - I drove past Glen Garioch on the my way to Glendronach but was not sure if they do handfills. Will need to double check :)

Whisky Review #61 | Jura 1993 17 Year Old Single Cask 58.1% ABV
Переглядів 227 годин тому
Today I am reviewing a 17 year old single cask, private bottling of Jura, distilled in December of 1993 and bottled in December 2010. I have only had 1 other bottle of Jura distillate from the 90's (Whisky Sponge's 27 year old) that I had last year and it was my favourite bottle from last year, just about the best bottle I have ever had. In my opinion this 17 year old has pretty much all the qu...
Whisky Review #60 | Bruichladdich 2009 12 Year Old Private Cask 55% ABV | Whisky Auction Bargain
Переглядів 649 годин тому
Up for review today I try out a private cask 12 year old Bruichladdich, bottled at 55% ABV. Distilled in 2009 and bottled in 2021. With the rising costs of official bottlings in my opinion we need to look at alternatives on where to buy from. This bottle for review I won on an auction site recently, and for me is one of the bargain malts I have had this year as it only cost £55. Very hard to fi...
Whisky Review #59 | Springbank 12 Year Old Cask Strength 2024 Release 56.2% ABV | Batch 10.09.24
Переглядів 13312 годин тому
Up for review today I try out the latest Springbank 12 cask strength. I was extremely lucky in getting a bottle as this is the first time I have managed to get a bottle since 2021. Has been great to revisit this fantastic release - in my opinion the addition of water benefits this dram so keep that in mind if you do manage to get a bottle. I will revisit this dram in a few months to see how thi...
Whisky Review #58 | Kilkerran 16 Year Old 2024 Release 46% ABV | Batch 05.06.24
Переглядів 10314 годин тому
Up for review today I journey back to Campbeltown and try out the latest batch of the Kilkerran 16 year old, batch bottled on 05.06.24. If you decide to get a bottle in my opinion have a few drams and then let the bottle breathe for several months. I found it to be a tad alcoholic especially on the nose, however after 3 months in the bottle I am glad to say that the time has done wonders to the...
Whisky Review #57 | Port Charlotte PC11 Travel Retail Exclusive 59.5% ABV
Переглядів 5116 годин тому
Up for review today I try out an 11 year old Port Charlotte (PC11) bottled in 2014 when Jim McEwan was the lead distiller. Bottled at a healthy 59.5% ABV, using ex-bourbon and ex-oloroso sherry casks, this is a beautiful, complex expression in my opinion, and definitely worth seeking a bottle at auction. Hope you enjoy the review guys :)
Time In The Bottle | Ardbeg Spectacular VS Ardbeg 5 Year Old Cask Strength Blend

Hi folks. This is a new series I am starting up - where I try out bottles that have been sitting for a while, and see if there are any changes. For today the Ardbeg Spectacular has been open for around 7 months now, and the Ardbeg 5 year old blend for over a year. Hope you enjoy this new series and my thights :)
Whisky Review #56 | Springbank 10 Amontillado Cask Matured 55% ABV Limited Release 2024
Переглядів 285День тому
Up for review today I try out the latest Springbank 10 sherry limited release - this time cask maturation was 5 years in refill ex-bourbon casks and 5 years in fresh Amontillado casks. I am very lucky to have got a bottle of this and a massive shoutout to my local. Will we get the Springbank distillery character on this release? If you wish spend a bit of time and watch to see. Hope you enjoy t...
Whisky Review #55 | Cadenhead's Enigma Highland Park 19 Year Old 54.7% ABV
Переглядів 6014 днів тому
Up for review today I try out a 19 year old from an Orkney distillery (Highland Park), bottled by independent bottler Cadenhead's, as part of their Enigma series. In short it is a very interesting, intriguing bottle that I would not have guessed was from Highland Park, purely based on the nose. It is on the palate where things are revealed and the more classic Highland Park notes come out on fu...

Up for review today I try out the latest Foursquare release, called Magisterium. It is the 26th release in the Exceptional Cask Series. Is it a magical rum? Whisky Review #54 | Adelphi Caol Ila 2010 13 Year Old Single Cask 1st Fill Oloroso Sherry 56.7% ABV
Переглядів 6714 днів тому
Up for review today I go back to Islay and try out another Caol Ila, this time bottled by Adelphi. As you can see by the colour this was matured for 13 years in a 1st fill Oloroso sherry cask. I have never been disappointed with any of the bottles I have had from Adelphi and this one is no exception - rich, indulgent, with quite a lot of clean, sherry influence but in my opinion beautifully bal...
Whisky Review #53 | Jura 15 Year Old Single Cask 52.8% ABV | Chorlton Whisky
Переглядів 10521 день тому
Up for review today I have another bottling from Jura, this time a 15 year old, bottled by independent bottler, Chorlton Whisky. This time a slightly different profile from the Maltbarn 10 year old - the Maltbarn being more apple led which reminds me of summer, and this one feels more citrus/sweet orange led which reminds me more of Autumn. Either way lots of notes to pick apart so I hope you e...
Rum Review #47 | Master Of Malt Fiji 2009 13 Year Old 61% ABV | Best Value Rum Of The Year
Переглядів 61Місяць тому
For my review today I am staying in Fiji and review a 13 year old single cask rum, bottled by Master Of Malt. At under £50, in my opinion, this is the best value rum of the year. Unfortunately sold out from Master Of Malt just now, however it may appear again as it looks like they may be releasing it in batches. For the price it cannot be beaten. Hope you enjoy the review guys :)
Whisky Review #52 | Burnside 1996 27 Year Old 52.9% ABV | Halcyon Spirits
Переглядів 46Місяць тому
Up for review today I try out a teaspooned Balvenie, a lovely 27 year old Burnside. A very complex dram, perfect for winter, and one of my top drams of 2024. Independent bottler Halcyon Spirits have knocked this out of the park in my opinion. Hope you enjoy the review guys :)
Rum Review #46 | South Pacific Fiji 2012 11 Year Old 57.5% ABV | The Whisky Jury
Переглядів 39Місяць тому
Today I review a rum from Fiji from the South Pacific distillery, bottled by The Whisky Jury. Overall an excellent bottle with some intriguing tasting notes - mango, tropical, watermelon, varnish, glue, vegetal funk, olive oil especially on the palate, sugar cane and sharper citric/acidic type notes when you add water. Very easy drinking and highly enjoyable. Hope you enjoy the review guys :)

Hey, thanks for the review. I just opened up a GNM Highland Park 199527 year-old and it may be the best whiskey that I have ever tasted I have tried a couple of the Cadenhead releases and they were nice but nothing close to the Highland Park 27 mind you we do not get all of the special releases that get dropped

Thanks for your comment bud and I have to say that I am a little jealous that you have a 27 year old Highland Park 😁 I'm sure it is absolutely gorgeous, and hopefully at some point I will be able to taste it 🥃

Independent bottlers can still get it wrong at times though - won't mention names but one bottler has just released a 14 year old Bruichladdich for £170! I mean that is absolutely ludicrous when Chorlton released one for just over £100 not that long ago. I don't really get it to be honest. Even the reviewer advised there was no distillery character, with it being completely butchered in a wine cask. Not got anything against that type of maturation, but there needs to be balance imo. I will continue to seek out Bruichladdich on auctions as that is definitely where you can get most bang for your buck. Although the bottle I reviewed here does lack some information, after tasting it I can assure folk this is great quality and a fine example of bourbon cask matured Bruichladdich. Thanks for your comment mate 🥃

@whiskyjourney175 there is a blend that I am really enjoying at the moment, I don't know if you have tried? A Douglas Laing Campbeltown cask strength batch #2 The Gauldrons? Tons of Campbeltown funk and flavour, I have been loving it!

Cheers mate. The ex-bourbon maturation definitely comes forth the most on this one imo, with some sherry notes that give some red and dried fruit character. I don't really get any of the 5% rum influence yet. I am an ex-bourbon fan like you so with the majority being ex-bourbon this is right up my street 🥃

The 12 cask strength has never disappointed me - can't say that I have ever had a "bad" batch, but each batch does tend to vary based on the cask maturation and what is involved in the mix. For me this one is more bourbon forward with some sherry, but to be honest I don't really get the 5% rum cask influence. Perhaps needs some time to breathe to let the flavours come together a bit more. I will revisit in a few months. Enjoy your comparison today mate - you have some fine drams there indeed 🥃

Nice one. I've still got a half-full (let's be positive) bottle of the 16 YO. You're right, it settles down with time. I must say, I find all Kilkerrans to be extremely oily, which I just love. The prices in Australia for Kilkerrans are still sort of sane, but blink and you'll miss them. Whereas Springbank prices require an appointment with one's bank manager.

Yes totally agree mate, the Kilkerran spirit really does have that oily consistency that like you I also love. Really great things happening in Campbeltown. The 10 year old is a solid bottle mate, and a great introduction to the distillery. In my opinion one of the best 10 year olds from Islay, if not the best. I think you went with the right choice by getting the 10 year old over the Wee Beastie. Let me know how you get on with it mate 🥃

If you mean the Heavily Peated batch 10 that is a great bottle that I have not got around to reviewing yet. One of the best value for money cask strength bottles you can get. Please don't pay anything near to £160 for the 16 year old - it's not worth that kind of cash in my opinion. Maybe wait until the next batch comes around, or alternatively try and get it at auction. Kilkerran does not hit the same prices as Springbank on auction so you may get lucky. Thanks for your comment bud, it is appreciated 🥃

@whiskyjourney175 I did some searching around and found a French website with a bottle of the 16yr old for £80! And a springbank 10yr old for £87. The postage was £14 but still a great deal, better than anything I could find in the u.k. Yes, i have the Kilkerran heavily peated batch 10, which is a personal favourite atm. Cheers! 🥃

@@-xirx- Drink Finder (Constantine Stores) online based in Cornwall have the Kilkerran 16 currently for £75 but not the Springbank 10. Carringtons Wines online based in Manchester have the Springbank 10 currently in stock for £72.50 but don't have the Kilkerran 16. Thanks so much for reviewing this and letting us live vicariously… I bought each of the first three year’s releases @ $150 which is MSRP here in the states 😳with that price tag I always have high expectations… I found each to be soft and somewhat underwhelming , Albiet all pleasant. Something one has to sit and relax with and enjoy its gentle nuances… similar experience with Longmorn 16… but the Longmorn is at 48% which it needs…. My main critique with older age SB (16,18,21) is that they all feel underpowered by the 46%. IMO these need a bump to at least 48% to 50% range to convey the experience of what SB has to offer… especially for the high price here in the States New K16 @ $160-$170 SB 18 @ $280 SB 21 @ $1000 Cheers 🥃

I hear you mate, it is a hard sell at $160 (£127). I know the price differences between countries is totally out of whack but for £127 I want something pretty special and more than likely at cask strength. A bump in ABV would most definitely be welcomed by me, but then costs would probably go even more through the roof. Completely get what you mean about the older age statements feeling a bit underpowered, but as you said good drams to relax to. The Kilkerran 16 for me definitely feels more like a "summer time" dram, where I can just sit in the sun and relax. It's a real shame that the prices in the States are what they are 🥃

It's the price that matters though isn't it John? It's nowhere near worth $150 but it is worth the £75 I paid for it. Truth be told though I don't think it's that much better than the £50 twelve year. Past batches have been better.

Congratulations for landing a bottle, opening it and reviewing it. It sounds like a good one. There's no chance of buying a bottle off the shelf. I'm so pleased it's not sulphured because that is a real possibility with Springbank. Amontillado, Palo Cortado or Oloroso will all give a similar profile when used in whisky. The main factor is how long the sherry maturation is involved. By the way, it's pronounced Amon-tea-ado (my wife is Spanish). I should be getting brassed off about not landing another batch of Springbank yet again but I'm not too bothered. This past month or so I've been so fortunate to have landed a lot of quality independent stuff, including your Fiji recommendation, most of which has been excellent value. I even resisted the temptation to buy a bottle of Daftmill which was on my seller's website for two weeks. Went for some ex-bourbon Bimber instead which was £35 cheaper. I'm also a wine and sherry nerd as well and spend a lot of time in that world as well. There's very little cross over in the two worlds and that's a shame because quality sherry has all the characteristics of top end whisky. Anyway, fine review and don't be so self-depreciative. You review very good stuff and it is much appreciated. WT

Thanks for your comment mate and also for correcting my pronunciation haha. I had a feeling I got it wrong. Yes I am very happy with this bottle. I been shopping at the place I got it from for around 5 years so figured if you don't ask you don't get. Fortunately the owner is very generous and perhaps luck on my side. Couldn't get the 12 cask strength nor the longrow 18 so felt good to score something. Also great to see the distillery character coming out in the finish. Hope you are getting along well with that Fiji as it's a little cracker imo. Daftmill is one I still have to try. Only thing that has stopped me is the high price for 46% ABV. I still see the latest release out there so it's not instantly selling out. Will definitely go the sample route if I can get it. Anyway thanks again mate and good to see you are doing well 👍

I'm also a fan of this bottle. It's interesting how different people pick up on different notes. On the nose, I found a pear note to be dominant, with orange, among others, in the background. A fruit salad was a good description for this rum.

I missed out on this one but I'm always on and off on the Foursquare trail. I joined the journey from day one and I've had more than my fair share. I've had some of the fancy ones but my favourite bang for buck are the 12 ex-bourbons. I'm a fan of Doorly's and Seale's too. I hear what you say about the oak because it's always present but just about contained. I'm a big fan of Mount Gay too and just ploughed through the Eclipse Navy Strength which is a cracker for the money. This sounds absolutely excellent but guess what though my old buddy? Berry Bros & Rudd have a private cask 15 year old (55%) which I suspect is an absolute diamond. I've got one but it's flying under the radar and still available from their website. They have a good history of rum and it's well worth keeping an eye on the website.

Great to see you open this bottle and you encouraged me to open mine at long last. Yep, the smell is pouring out just when you open the seal. These Kill Devil Hampdens are classic off the the radar funk bombs but this is way below the 10 and 11. I completely agree with your nosing and tasting notes. It drinks well neat with the classic aged Jamaica (Hampden) profile of concentrated pineapple, green olive brine, ripe papaya and mango. Perhaps a tiny bit of banana but its not too overripe. Yes, a bit of coconut and all the other stuff. It takes water very well. I bought two back in the day and the 10 and 11 as well. Still have an unopened 11. I've recently decided to make a start and dip into my stash. There's a fair amount of it and I bought it to save for some later date after all. Hey mate great to hear from you and glad that you are doing well. Yeah really something special with the Hampden Kill Devils. As you said the 16 does not have the same levels of funk of the 10 and 11 but a superb bottle in it's own right...for me a bit more refined for a higher ester Hampden.Keep an eye on auctions mate...they do come up now and again and I got this one not that much more than the original retail. For some reason they don't seem to be as popular as the Velier releases as an example but that suits me just fine. By the way, just a heads up in case you have not heard about it, there is a belter of a rum currently on MOM, a rather funky South Pacific Fiji 13 yo. On the nose feels almost like a continental Guyana with the funk it has. Does drink a little hot but packs a lot of flavour. Still have to do a review of it but it will be my bargain single cask rum of the year. It's one of MOM's own bottlings, bottled at 61% ABV. Never enough of Caol Ilas. I like spirit driven ( in a good way of course) peaty whiskies so i preffer younger punchy peat monsters. One of the best Caol Ila i ever had was Cadenhead's 11yo Palo Cortado, yummy stuff. Also tried 17yo from bourbon hogshead, from Cadenheads as well and it was fantastic. Generally love Caol Ila and in my opinion Caol Ila's distilate always plays well in different maturation or finishing in sherry/ wine casks. Im really intrigued of this medicinal aspect in G&M expression, which i like very much. @@-xirx- I am not that familiar with IB of Caol Ila. A few years back I would regularly get the Elements Of Islay series. They bottled several Caol Ila expressions, most around 6-8 years old if my memory is right. Very competitively priced (around £60 or so) and all very enjoyable, albeit a tad youthful. Back then I could not afford more expensive expressions with more age, so these bottles were great to get my Caol Ila fix. Probably difficult to get now, but if you find any at around the price I mentioned you should definitely get a bottle - mind they only came in 50cl bottles, however I still think it was worth it at that price. This Halcyon Spirits bottle is obviously a different beast to the Elements Of Islay releases - more mature, less alcohol bite etc. I cannot speak regarding the Rare Cask and G&M bottles as I have never had them, but I don't think you could go wrong. Perhaps seek out a sample if you can before committing to an entire bottle - I know that is not always easy but it's a lot of money to spend. • @whiskyjourney175
      @whiskyjourney175 2 місяці тому

Think you may be referencing Serge's review at Whiskyfun because he mentions the "soapiness"? I read his review a month or so back and to be honest I disagree with some of his thoughts. First he states it is a "classic high-ester Jamaican" on the nose - In my opinion it is not and you would be disappointed getting it with that in mind. The Whisky Jury STCE and Cambridge STCE are far more estery and funky. I would consider this Whisky Blues release to be on par with the Kill Devil 16 year old release - so lower to medium ester levels. Having drunk a bottle of this I don't understand the soapy aspect he is talking about. I never felt that - I mostly agree with his assessment of the other tasting notes though, which I found to be very enjoyable. It is a challenging high ABV rum, and will certainly not be for everyone. However, of all the Long Ponds I do have this one does come in last place. It's not a bad dram or anything like that...it's just that I prefer the other bottles that I have. So, from first to last, Cambridge 12 year old, Kill Devil 16 Year Old, Thompson Bros 22 year old tied with the Whisky Jury 7 year old and lastly this Whisky Blues 17 year old. A very good bottle, but I would not purchase another one because there are other Long Pond botttles I would purchase first if given the chance.

Hi I was just at Spring bank tasting tried eight year-old cask strength and thought it was fabulous so I was looking for reviews and yours was the first that came up. Glad I watched it,thoroughly enjoyed your thoughts and comments. I only wish I had a 2023 to compare it to. At end of the tasting we had a chance to purchase some bottles and most people passed on the eight year-old so I was able to pick uptwo for $97 Canadian each I hope people keep passing on it so that I can find it next time it comes out

Thanks for your comment mate. Surprised that people passed up on it...it is one of the releases I look forward to the most every year. I still prefer the 2023 as imo it has a bit more balance between the sherry and Kilkerran spirit, however the 2024 is still an amazing dram for the money and hard to beat it at its price point.

@@whiskyjourney175 I was surprised too, but they were just interested in the local barley 13 year, springbank 15 and the springbank 10 there was 11 killKerran ‘s eight cask strength left in the end plus a few longrow nv which by the way is amazing this new batch 14/11/23 I managed to pick a couple of these up.

Good timing, I'm seeing the Foursquare XXIV ECS 2011 for £80 & doing some due diligence, I'll be getting it by the sound off things so far.

For £80 you can't really go wrong in my opinion. Only reason I opted out of getting it is because I already have about 4-5 open bottles of Foursquare, the 12 CS being one of them. Definitely get it if your Foursquare collection is running a little thin. Cheers 🥃

Many thanks for your comment. It is a fabulous bottle...one of if not the best peated expressions I have had in a while. I tasted it again last night and I think it is even more impressive than when I reviewed it. An excellent, nicely aged Laphraoig at a very decent price. Cheers!

lol nice spot mate, Anthems is a classic album along with Nightside. One of my favourite bands along with Arcturus/Enslaved/Mayhem/Ulver...basically most of the early Norwegian black metal scene 🥃

Thank you for your comment. For a youthful Longrow it is well done in my opinion, and holds up very well with the addition of water. I am glad I managed to get it and hope other folk will get the opportunity 🥃

@@whiskyjourney175 Yes I love it when many people have an opportunity to enjoy good whisky. I wish prices allowed for more people to partake. All spirits seem to be getting a bit out of control in prices and while I can afford it I hate companies taking advantage of enthusiasts. I enjoy your thoughts a lot! 🙂
