Solo Hiking the Spectacular Huayhuash Trek - The Alpine Route
7 Days solo hiking the Huayhuash trail in Peru. This is one of the best multi-day hikes in the world and it certainly lives up to it's reputation.
Any questions about the trail message me on insta: @nickkeenan91
Full trail guide soon to be release on my blog: www.nickstraveldiary.com
This route maximises all the alpine alternative routes that are possible WITHOUT mountaineering equipment. All you need for this route is some good hiking boots and a good sense of direction!
Gear: Tent Durston X-mid 1p
Sleeping Bag: Rab -9C down filled bag
Backpack: Lowe Alpine Manaslu backpack 65L
FAQs...
I used a tour bus to shuttle me to the trail head. If they have seats spare from the tour group you can hitch a ride for a small fee. This was the most cost effective way I could find for a solo hiker to get to the trailhead.
Security Fees: You have to pay security fees to hike this trail. Carry cash with you on trail. Fees are generally collected at the campgrounds but there are some checkpoints on trail too.

    It did the exact same route a few months ago, cool to relive it through different eyes. Some things I noticed: I went in late May/early June, it was a lot greener and there were lots of flowers/bushes blooming. At the Trapecio pass ( 08:10 ) the ice has receded a lot, I went through pretty much the exact same spot as you but it was completely ice free. Where were all the cows??? I've (unfortunately) met so many all over the place. From the video it seems you met a lot more people, not sure if it was the time of the year or if I was just lucky, but I barely met anyone and there were entire days when I didn't see a soul. The view from the Cerro Gran Vista is out of this world, if you know you know. On the last day I could not be arsed to start early to catch a bus at Llamac that same day... I just chilled the whole morning at Jahuacocha, and only made it to Llamac in early afternoon. I was immediately offered an accommodation (bed + shower) for 10 soles, a colectivo to Chiquián left at 6 AM the next day (15 soles). I also documented this hike (and all the others I've done in my almost 3 months in Perú), check out my channel if you are interested :)

      No, I was tempted but you would need extra tools and equipment, probably an ice axe and crampons as a minimum. Id say that pass is more of a Mountaineering route

      It's possible, however day 4 is a challenging day even though the distance isn't that high, also the town Campsite isn't the best, I'd probably aim to avoid camping in the town if you can as it's noisy and lots of wildlife around

    Eh Nick. Great vid. You left out the traverse of the ledge in front of peyto peak lol. Was trying to get a view on what that exposure was like. Have heard mixed things. Did you find it bad or no?

    • @NickKeenan
      @NickKeenan 2 роки тому

      It was a little too exposed not have both hands free 😆 I personally didn't find it too bad, it's loose scree & if you fall you will almost certainly slide over the edge, but you can get good traction & it isn't too steep of an angle. If you are used to hiking on scree it's no big deal, if you aren't then it's probably terrifying. I was actually more concerned with falling rocks from above than I was about the drop below. I wrote a full route guide for that route on Fatmap which has more details about the entire route including the crux. fatmap.com/routeid/2862378/caldron-peak

      @@JakeDoingStuff Hey Jake...I just did this hike last Saturday. For me, the traverse section of this hike was extremely unnerving and I've done exposure before but on hikes where the trail was more defined and wider. One fall here and the results would not be good as you'd go over the cliff edge which is not too far away at the most critical point. I was very deliberate in my movements and was hyper aware of my foot placement as well as utilized my poles to give me some confidence and even though I made it across both times, it was not fun for me. I didn't look down or around until I had negotiated this section which isn't very long but you are very vulnerable. I just posted some of my GoPro video that shows me on the way BACK from the lake and would be the second half of the traverse if you were going TO the lake. There is a natural break between the two halves of the traverse where you can catch your breath. Here's the link to the video: ua-cam.com/video/AU3hggayW3c/v-deo.html Be safe out there!

      @@therockymountaintrails thx bud. We did the hike as well. It was incredible but you're right you need laser focus on every footstep when you're Crossing that. I felt the foot kicks were well enough but a bit of erosion or heavy rains would completely change that all. Did you ford peyto Creek at the Cairns? Or did you ford at the mouth of peyto Lake and stay to the right of the creek the whole way up? We went left and crossed at the Cairns on the way up. But the creek was high on the way back and we stayed on the North side traversing the bank and crossing at the lake mouth on the way back as we know of someone who was day hiking and washed down during the Ford. Will definitely check out your vid. The climb from the peyto lake back up to the viewpoint is a leg killer ending on the way back !!!

    • @therockymountaintrails
      @therockymountaintrails 2 роки тому

      @@JakeDoingStuff We crossed at the mouth and stayed on the right hand side all the way till the climb up to cross Caldron Creek. There were a few places where a wrong step would send you 15 - 20 feet into Peyto Creek so had to be careful there also. Not sure which is better... staying on the left side, and following the good trail through the trees but having to ford the river higher upstream and more dangerous or crossing at the mouth for less current but being more exposed on the cliff edge? I'd prolly do the mouth crossing again as it was much easier ... and the cliff edge was manageable. Did you go all the way up Caldron Peak? My hiking partner made it but I was gassed and pulled the plug about 200 meters from the top so I waited for him to come back from the summit. I knew I needed enough in the tank to get back over the traverse without being shaky as well as the last 250 - 300 meters back up at the end which was absolutely soul crushing!!

    Love yr tent,... looking at getting he same one. How did you peg it out on the wooden tent pads?

    • @NickKeenan
      @NickKeenan 3 роки тому

      I had to get creative, I used sticks and dropped them in between the cracks with lines attach to middle then turned them sideways so they wouldnt come out for 1 half, then the other half I got long sticks and dropped them upright between the cracks then used rocks to hold them in place, thankfully that tent only needs 4 stakes so it was actually a really good set up, it was harder setting up in sand, I had to use lots of rocks!

      There's no scrambling to do it's all hiking, snowshoes maybe required if you go a few days after heavy snow, however given the current warm weather you should get up there fine without, I would recommend taking microspikes though!
