From Firewood Mould to Beautiful Calabash Bowl
From Firewood Mould to Beautiful Calabash Bowl
In this video I take a grimy, mouldy piece of firewood and turn it into something special - a Calabash Bowl. Wood turning a Calabash bowl seemed odd at the time because it had no foot, but when it was finished I truly loved the look.
A Calabash bowl is a traditional bowl made from a hardened shell of a Calabash fruit. Whilst I am using Horse Chestnut here, the shape is similar as it has a full rounded aesthetic and has no base or foot.

From my research online they are a lot more rounded at the bottom - if you imagine half a coconut shell, but bigger, you wouldn’t be far off. I was tempted to do that but thought it would be too unstable. I’ve seen some pictures of them being supported by sitting them on top of a circle of rope. Your comment has got me thinking of other ‘original’ types of bowl. Will see what I can find for the next project!

I wouldn't trash it. Try with either a "thicker" from base to rim piece of wood or one the is more uniform and or coplanar in dimension and perhaps not so "oblong" with the shape so two of the edges won't vanish while turning. It's the truth of learning from error and not from success. I enjoyed the video. Thanks from sharing

Hi Tony. Thanks for the advice. I did take it out the bin this afternoon and attempted to give it another chance. I did manage to get the wings a bit better and then had a huge catch which broke a wing off. Hey ho! Definitely in the bin for good now! Thanks for the support as always 👍🏻

Thank you - I appreciate the support. The only thing I’d change is making a tighter fit, but it’s the first one I’ve done so all a good learning experience.

Thank you. Yes, the grain pattern is incredible. It’s a great little lathe - if it had variable speed without adjusting a belt it would be perfect! Thank you - I appreciate your support and hope you enjoy the videos as much as I enjoy making them ☺️

A really nice shallow bowl Ben, I like the large foot. Very enjoyable video to watch. You may find if you lock the tailstock quill you'll get better support when turning between centres and it may have been the cause of difficulty getting rid if end grain tearout on the face,

Hi Bryan. Hope the weather over there is better than here! Thanks for the tip - I don’t tend to lock that off, I didn’t really know the benefits, but I will certainly do that from now on. Thank you 🙏

While turning that piece I was thinking of it's possible uses and the idea of fruit came to mind and then the image at the end confirmed it. Thanks for sharing
