🚽 Fix a running toilet | How to replace toilet fill valve – For Beginners [step-by-step]
A bad fill valve can cause a number of annoying issues with a toilet - including a running toilet. This video shows how to replace a fill valve, step-by-step, including how to find the right replacement.
🚽 Fill valve replacement process:
1️⃣ Turn off water
🪠 If shutoff valve is old and won’t shutoff, can either:
🔧 Replace it
🔧 Or temporarily turn off the water to the house
2️⃣ Flush tank to drain water
🪠 Hold handle down to allow as much water as possible to drain
🪠 Cycle fill valve to ensure water is off
🪠 Remove residual water with sponge or towel
3️⃣ Disconnect supply line from old fill valve
🪠 Channel locks can be helpful tool
🔧 V-Jaw channel locks preferred
4️⃣ Remove old fill valve
🪠 Remove nut on bottom of tank
🪠 Channel locks can be helpful tool
🔧 V-Jaw channel locks preferred
🪠 Disconnect fill tube
🔧 Pull off clip from overflow tube
🔧 Pull off of fill valve
5️⃣ Clean surface of toilet tank around fill valve hole to remove old gasket residue
🪠 Ensures clean smooth surface to improve seal
6️⃣ Install new fill valve
🪠 Adjust height of new fill valve before installing
🔧 Use old fill valve as a reference (assuming old fill valve was adjusted properly)
🪠 Ensure top of fill valve is above overflow tube (for common fill valves - not applicable for low-profile)
🔧 Check instructions (top of fill valve cap should be ~3in above top of overflow tube)
🪠 Connect float of new fill valve if applicable
🪠 Check gasket orientation on shank
🔧 Ensure taper is facing away from top of fill valve to ensure quality seal
🪠 Place fill valve in tank passing threads through hole in bottom of tank
🪠 Install fill valve plastic nut and tighten enough to hold fill valve in place but allow rotation
🪠 Orient fill valve & float assembly so that float and toilet handle can move freely without contact
🔧 Needs to be clear of drain valve & overflow tube
🔧 Needs to provide adequate room for routing of fill tube without interference
🧻 Attach fill tube to drain valve
🪠 Attach clip to end of fill tube
🪠 Attach fill tube & clip combo to overflow tube
🪠 Attach other end of fill tube to fill valve
🪠 Trim/bend as necessary
🔧If fill tube is too long, it can be trimmed using scissors
🧻 Snug the plastic mounting nut beneath the toilet
🪠 Maintain orientation of valve, hand-tight + ¼ turn
🧻 Reattach supply line or replace supply line if worn out
🪠 If new supply line needed
🔧 Most will be 3/8” compression by 7/8”
🔧 They come in various lengths most commonly between 9in-20in
🔧 Commonly either braided polymer or braided stainless steel
🔧 Pay attention to the attachment types
🛠️ If fill valve has plastic threads, best fit will be with supply line with plastic threads
🛠️ Will need a wrench to attach supply line compression fitting to shutoff valve
🧻Adjust water level via float adjustment until it stops at waterline or ~1/2” below top of the overflow tube
🪠 Low water levels can cause a weak/incomplete flush (will not achieve adequate siphon)

Thanks man! You provided a lot of great info and your video was the one I kept on referencing. Was able to change mine successfully! Fixed my washer issue too (it kept on pausing on wash/rinse cycles because of the water level). You earned my like and subscribe! Can't afford my first house quite yet, its 2024 and prices are crazy, but I'm sure i'll be revisiting your channel when the time comes. Keep up the great work!

you are just lucky to have the stop valve screwed into the pipe, mine used soldering to the pipe, the box is plastic, there is no way to use a flame at all, can't understand why those idiots install the valve using soldering with a plastic box.

Hi! Currently trying to replace my leaky washer valves. I can't read the stamp on the valve because it's so corroded. I measured the circumference of the pipe with a tape measure and it is 1 inch. Is that the nps size in your table? Not sure which size I'll need bc most videos says I'll need a half inch. Thanks!

So if you had a leak that caused a bubble in your floor, (Particle board(s)) would it be a good idea to patch the bad spot on the board(s) or just go for the whole bathroom. We had already thought of remodeling it anyway.. but is it easier to pull apart the floor with everything out?

A suggestion... Replace any water valve with 1/4 in valve. Think of this - If there is a leak and you immediately need to turn the water off...1) Hear or see leak, 2) run and find leak, 3) turn valve, turn valve, turn valve, turn valve...... That type of valve works well on outdoor faucets, always replace with 1/4 in turn off value. It take just a 1/4 in turn and the water is off....So replace them is my suggestion. Also, another factor that makes turning the water off quickly is the limited space for you turn the valve. I would replace them if you fear another leak.

thought i needed a plumber then realized i believe my water valves are screw on not soldered so next problem is getting them off...mine are separate hot and cold not in a box..pipes are exposed...have that handle like you are showing but the intake side needs a female end i believe and the washer hose end is male to connect hose...id like the ball valve if thats possible....does it matter if thats not what i have already? started leaking at the handle then at the stem so its time for just taking the whole thing off...i think i can do it myself...if i can get it off lol...

This setup is makes it pretty easy to replace the valves. Unfortunately 90% of the boxes out there have the valves attached to the box and soldered on below in the wall. This opens up a whole can of worms with soldering in a flammable wall and cutting into drywall. I would recommend some shark bite valves and fittings for that setup but you should have some prior plumbing experience before attempting it.
