2023 NSR Western Championship 1/32 Slotcar Race - Hosted by Electric Dreams 4K
Welcome back Slot Car hobbyists and racers! I am really proud to share my completely unofficial and totally iPhone filmed 🤣 NSR Western Championship Slotcar Race after movie.
The race was sponsored by @nsrworldchampion1156 and was hosted by @slotcarstore in El Segundo, California. Over 40 racers signed up for the first annual event which took place December 8th-10th, 2023. The race was held on a 1 of 1 custom Gary Gerding 1/32 specific slot car track, powered by 12.5 volts.
A little background on the race itself - The event was based on a spec class, made up of NSR Mosler MT900s slotcars for all racers. The Mosler MT900 is one of NSR's most infamous cars given its long wheelbase, low body, and general proportions. The cars all had 25k RPM NSR Shark sidewinder motors, which came with a 14t pinion. The spur gear was set at either a 31t or 32t and everyone ran a spec NSR Supergrip tire, which was dyed yellow specifically for Electric Dreams. Weight on the cars was limited to Professor Motor tungsten pucks on the pod only, and the wheels and guide were also NSR specific items. Overall, the cars were very fast, a bit touchy, and a blast to drive.
On Saturday, Qualifying took place and the format was the first of it's kind I believe for this type of race. The entire field had 1 minute to set their fastest time (Q3) and the top 20 times would make it into Q2. From there, the top 6 fastest drivers would have a Pole Shootout with 3 minutes on Yellow Lane to achieve their fastest time.

Sunday saw the main heats, the semis, and the big final. There were 7 total heats, and the top 12 would advance into the semifinal. Both the qualifying races and the semi final were made up of all drivers racing on each lane (6) for 3 minutes each. That means they'd have 18 total minutes to set their best lap total.

    Generally speaking what is the distance you like for your front tire to be off the track?

    • @idwurks
      @idwurks 4 місяці тому

      We run the front tires on the track. So the car is (for the most part) contacting the track at 5 points - the guide/braid, the front tires, and the rear tires. We also true our front tires to be perfectly round. We tend to like a level chassis front to back to be neutral handling.

    Very interesting stuff. I'm just a year or so into the hobby. You seem to have a large inventory of spacers, screws, nuts, washers, etc. Is that something you have just accumulated over time, or can you actually purchase assortments of these things? Thanks and looking forward to more videos.

    • @idwurks
      @idwurks 5 місяців тому

      Hey Randy - I tend to go a bit ham when those things are in the counter in front of me. I just started racing 1/32 in 2021/22 so I have been collecting parts. If I need a part, I'll usually buy a few just in case - especially bags of spacers and screws. I always give that stuff away at the track so it ends up emptying fast! I would recommend checking out SlotingPlus as they carry a HUGE amount of spacers, screws, nuts - All incredibly high quality. Good luck with your racing and thanks for the comment!

    Ian, your video seres is on point & on time. I am doing the Jim Rose, Slim Can Conversion for MRSLOTCAR McLaren build so this is icing on the cake for me! Thank You, thank you, thank you! And for my first question; why did you pick the 7052 front wheels and not something lighter and or smaller like the; MRSLOTCAR MR7021 Ergal Aluminum Wheels 'ARIA' Air Ride System - 15.8 X 8.2mm - 3/32" Axle? Thank you for your time and help. Ian, 1/32 plastic cars are new to me. I started slot cars back in the mid 60's and stoped when Slot Car Junction went out of existence, so 1/32 could be my come back! PS I watched a new Y/T video to day about NSR brushless motors and the guy in the video said that Paul G. has been in Arizona working on his brushless Slot Cars! I haven't seen Paul, since 2018 or so and his name comes up in a Slot Car video today Lol...

    Nice video bit different to how i tend to do things but all valid opinions. An option for you regarding motor security. Why do you choose to glue the motor and not use screws to secure it. If youre potentially concerned by it pivoting on the screw end and moving at the comm end of the motor. You can use fibre reinforced tape to secure the motor .

    • @idwurks
      @idwurks 7 місяців тому

      Thank you. Using the b7000 glue for the motor is due to a few reasons - 1) tape of any kind is not allowed on the pod or chassis at Electric dreams. 2) the b7000 provides some dampening as it’s not totally rigid, and 3) it can be cut easily and cleans up nicely :)

    • @jonanolakers1567
      @jonanolakers1567 9 місяців тому

      @@larrycariglio909 my guess is that spacers possibly induces play, potentially causing deslots. Another benefit is that is makes it easier to adjust front ride height. One major drawback is that it reduces the depth of the guide, mening that the guide has to move less vertically to cause a deslot. I believe this is one of the respons that we saw the front of the Mclaren seem unstable in the race, and might have been the deciding factor between a win ans a second place

      Stephen, thanks for the question. The B version is the one we're racing - It has a Slot.it Flat6 motor, as compared to the MR1041 which has the full height long can motor. The difference will be in the motor pod and the motor itself, and how the motor applies power. The "bigger" can motors tend to have more torque where the lower profile Flat 6 motors have a lower CG. Does that answer your question?
