For more accurate details it would be best to check with Transport Malta or the driving law of Malta. Good observation! Didn’t think about that 🤔☺️ They might have some special permit or so… It’s only a short distance from where they are picking up stone from down the river and taking it up the river, and using just about 70 meters of road. And as you say, there is no other way to the destination. The only other way would be through the river which is next to impossible (extreme off road / too steep / goes under a small road bridge), plus for environmental reasons (driving through a river/water with a vehicle = bad for environment, it makes no sense to go through the river. It would be interesting to know how it works with insurance and all, since the same road is randomly used by any type of road user.

I don´t know how it works elsewhere. But in Sweden they count in the same category as farming equipment and are alowed to drive on roads if it is for work or short distance travle. For long distance they have to be transported on a truck.

@@matsv201 Here in Australia they dont generally allow haul trucks on public roads, this is because of the damage they can cause to the road surface and danger they pose to other road users from unwanted interactions. I guess a small 20 -25 ton haul truck may be ok on a normal road but any bigger and you run into blind spots due to truck size and height, I use 40 - 50 ton Komatsu articulated haul trucks at my job and honestly normal road users are bloody morons when they come across a haul truck. Have had a few to many close calls where light vehicles try to treat a haul truck like any other road vehicle even though site training makes it very clear you must stay 50 meters clear of any heavy vehicle. Not sure why they think a 50 ton fully loaded haul truck can stop on a dime but they fucking do and its infuriating because every person allowed to drive on site has had training and inductions about SME equipment and what happens to light vehicles should they get hit or run over. Hint its not good for the light vehicle or its occupants, its even worse for pedestrians the haul truck will in all likely hood not even know they have hit a person and with how big the blind spots are likely didn't even know they were there. As fun and amazing as these machines are they deserve respect for the amount of chaos they can cause when things go wrong. (I do love the Komatsu HM400-5 Trucks, amazing machines to drive)

@trashpanda8437 Thanks for the thorough explanation! I understand what you mean about blind spots and all, as I’m a truck driver myself, and also a driving instructor focusing on road safety. It’s shocking how many blind spots a truck has. Unfortunately I know some people that died because of truck blind spots. Here is a particular experience I had, which I documented over a video, about an individual crossing the road diagonally and nearly run over by a truck - ua-cam.com/video/Dr1gQGI0fhk/v-deo.htmlsi=AKPCzPUSm0I7arb0 Let me ask you a question if I may… In the training you mentioned above, do they also make the trainees sit inside one of the trucks you mentioned above? Or sit next to a driver? Or even better, drive one with the assistance of a trainer to assist in spotting the blind spots. I find this approach one of the best ways of having other road users appreciate how difficult it is for a truck driver. They will eventually react different on the road and also have more awareness of the blind spots difficulties on different types of vehicles. A good way to drive or walk the road is this… If you can’t see the driver and even more, make eye contact, there is a big chance that the truck driver has not seen you.

Hello 👋 I'm sorry to give you this answer, but unfortunately that is not possible, as according to the law, in order to be able to obtain a driving license in Malta as an EU citizen coming from another EU country, you require to be a resident in Malta with a residence permit for at least 6 months. I believe that this is also a European law, so it would also apply to other EU countries, however I am not 100% sure about this.

@@DriveTravelLive going by the rates of my local driving school, the entire package necessary for aquiring a license costs 2.571 euro. That includes 4 "maneuvering" lessons, 16 driving lessons, 4 "technical driving facility" lessons, 29 lessons of theory, medical assesment, first aid certificate, photography for the license, and a testing fee. One lesson is 45 minutes and additional lessons cost 73 Euros. 25% of total cost is a VAT. It may not be exactly average but those prices are in the ballpark.

In this situation, I believe that when someone applies for a Learner's Permit, the most important thing is that the ID Card / Residence Permit is valid during the application process, and doesn't make a difference when it expires. However, I am not 100% sure as things change from time-to-time, therefore, the best (to be 100% sure) would be to ask TM.
