Castle Rock is more of a volcanic vent with it's bigger bothers like Salisbury Crag and Arthur's Seat there is quite a lot of volcanoes here with North Berwick Law to the big Super volcano up in Glen Coe

It's a common misconception that the castle sits on an extinct volcano. It doesn't It sits on what is called a 'volcanic seam', meaning that millions of years ago there'd have been a magma chamber deep under ground, as the magma tried to force it's way to the surface, it would look for the least resistance. This would often mean the magma would branch outwards, horizontally where it would often then cool and solidify, that is what we know as a 'volcanic seam'. During the last ice age as the glaciers scoured the land ripping away all of the softer rocks and soil, it left behind these exposed seams, creating what is known as a 'crag and tail'. As the ice came upon the volcanic rock, it couldn't shift it, so it went over the top of it(leaving the crag) and swept on over the landscape(leaving the tail). In the case of Edinburgh Castle, the castle itself is built on top of the crag, the Royal Mile is the tail. Stirling Castle is also built on a volcanic seam/crag and tail.
