"Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime" - #TheKorgis #80smusic #coversong
"Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime" is the most famous song by The Korgis, released in 1980 as a single from their second album, "Dumb Waiters". It is one of the most iconic pop ballads of the 1980s, known for its simple yet poignant melody, melancholic lyrics, and innovative use of the synthesizer. Its combination of classic and modern elements, along with its emotional message, made the song an international success, reaching the charts in several countries.
Meaning of the Lyrics
The lyrics of "Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime" explore universal themes such as change, love, and the need to face emotional challenges in life. The most famous line, "Everybody's got to learn sometime", suggests that everyone, sooner or later, must confront pain or personal growth, especially in romantic relationships. It is a reminder of life's inevitable reality, where love and suffering are intrinsically linked, and each individual must learn to accept and adapt to changes.
The song begins with an invitation to change one's heart and look around, suggesting that inner transformation is necessary to understand the beauty and love that surround us. The repetition of "I need your lovin' like the sunshine" uses a simple yet powerful simile, comparing love to an essential need, like sunlight, for growth and life.
The chorus, "Everybody's gotta learn sometime," can be interpreted as a reflection on the need to grow through difficult experiences, especially those related to love and relationships. The "having to learn" seems to refer to the fact that, eventually, everyone has to deal with pain, loss, or change. Despite its sweet tone, the message is profound and reflects human vulnerability.
Historical and Social Context
The song was released in 1980, a time of change both musically and socially. In England, the 1980s marked the transition from the punk and rock of the 1970s to the emerging new wave, a genre characterized by the use of synthesizers, electronic sounds, and a modern pop aesthetic.
On the social front, the UK was experiencing a period of economic crisis and unemployment, while Margaret Thatcher's austerity policies, after becoming Prime Minister in 1979, were creating divisions in the country. This social instability and the disillusionment of young people were reflected in much of the music of the time, although "Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime" is not an overtly political song. However, the theme of change and the need to face personal difficulties may have resonated particularly well in such an uncertain context.
From a musical standpoint, 1980 was a time of great technological experimentation, with the increasing use of electronic instruments like synthesizers. This new approach helped create a more futuristic and contemporary sound, and The Korgis, with "Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime," embraced this trend innovatively.
Production and Arrangements
A distinctive aspect of the song is the prominent use of the synthesizer. The repetitive electronic sound, combined with sweet and melancholic chords, gives the song a hypnotic and almost ethereal quality. The track mixes traditional instruments, like acoustic guitar, with an electronic arrangement, creating an atmosphere suspended between the classic and the modern.
Success and Impact
"Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime" was an immediate hit. It reached the fifth position in the UK charts and achieved high rankings in several other countries, including the United States and various European nations. Its emotional simplicity, combined with innovative production, ensured that the song remained ingrained in the public's collective memory.
The song has been covered by numerous artists over the years, demonstrating its ability to resonate with different generations and adapt to various musical styles. Among the most famous covers is Beck's version, created for the "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" soundtrack in 2004. Beck’s rendition has a more minimalist and haunting tone compared to the original but retains the melancholic and reflective quality of the lyrics. In 2004, Zucchero also released his own version, included in the album "Zu & Co."
Legacy
"Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime" has remained a classic of melancholic pop and has had a lasting impact thanks to its musical structure, universal lyrics, and ability to speak to different generations. The combination of simple, heartfelt melodies with a modern arrangement made this song not only a success of the moment but also a track that continues to resonate in popular culture. Thanks to numerous reinterpretations and its use in films and TV series, the song has maintained its relevance, reaching new audiences as well.

    Casio has always been a serious manufacturer of quality products such as watches, calculators, cameras etc. Musical instruments for home entertainment are also their field of interest for long time, but now they are up to be a strong competitor in a professional niche, and they make a splendid job. I have been playing Yamahas all my life, but my daughter purchased Casio px s1000 electric piano and the feel is awesome, regarding both key action and sounds. I tried several models in a local music shop, they are making wonders really. I played CT S1000V also there then, what a miracle!

    Studiare serve eccome! E ve lo dice una persona che studia da 50 anni la Chitarra partendo dalla Classica passando per il Jazz, il Blues, il Rock, tanto altro ed infine le ultime correnti virtuose. Mi permetto di aggiungere che non basta una vita per imparare a suonarla la Chitarra! Chi dice il contrario secondo me ha sentito in vita sua solo 10 dischi rifacendo a pappagallo 10 soli o riff in quei dischi e li si è fermato! E continuerà a farlo... Se pensate che poi uno sia davvero un fenomeno senza che abbia studiato vi sbagliate, egli se davvero non studiasse rimarrebbe statico nel suo recinto nel quale è nato ascoltando ed assimilando con gli anni la musica di quel recinto ma piu di la non va. Rimane fine a se stesso! La Musica è un linguaggio e la Teoria Musicale che abbraccia l'abc fino l'armonia serve eccome, non mette paletti e regole assurde ma mostra le strade percorribili da chi intende davvero suonare uno strumento per arrivare ad esprimere al meglio il proprio talento! E qui mi fermo perche rispetto troppo la MUSICA.

      @@bmp_giorgionegro come mai tre mesi fa le è venuta voglia di riportare la luce su questo brano?

    • @bmp_giorgionegro
      @bmp_giorgionegro 4 місяці тому

      Ah.. è una storia lunga, che risale a ben prima di tre mesi fa. Avevo già scritto un articolo su Roberta Faccani sul mio blog ( www.giorgionegro.eu/roberta-faccani-perche-mi-emoziona/ ) che risale al 2013 tuttavia, per semplificare, è un brano che adoro soprattutto e grazie alla voce di Roberta Faccani e che era nella mia lista delle cover da fare assolutamente. Vede, la mia è una sorta di ricerca archeologica della musica pop (non solo italiana) in cui estrapolo quelle che, secondo me, sono le perle di ogni epoca e di ogni tempo ( nell'ambito pop, ovviamente). Ovviamente ognuno ha i suoi gusti, non pretendo che tutti brani che "coverizzo" piacciano, ma fanno parte del mio bagaglio culturale (che non si limita alla musica pop, ma sconfina nel jazz e nella classica e... nei miei 12 album pubblicati di musica da me composta). Per ritornare alla Sua domanda, era un omaggio doveroso a chi mi ha suscitato forte emozioni ( come Roberta) e a tutti gli artisti che sono stati la colonna sonora della mia gioventù. Capisco che a volte certe scelte ( non è il caso di "Grido d'amore") possano sembrare molto "spartane" agl'occhi di molti (sterili) puristi, frutto di una nostomania patologica, tuttavia questo tipo di operazione si inserisce in un macro-progetto più ampio che qui, per ragioni di sintesi, non posso spiegare. La invito a seguire il mio blog, e molte cose saranno auto-evidenti. Ancora ringrazio per la sua domanda e le auguro tante buone cose. Continui a seguirmi, mi farebbe piacere. Un caro saluto. Giorgio Negro

      @@bmp_giorgionegro ho letto l'articolo ieri. Veramente interessante! Non avrei saputo descrivere la bellezza di questo brano e di questa cantante con parole migliori! Roberta Faccani è marchigiana come me e viviamo anche nella stessa provincia, ma non ne avevo mai sentito parlare finché non sono incappata per caso in alcune sue esibizioni con i Matia Bazar. Sono rimasta letteralmente folgorata! Abbiamo una creatura di rara bellezza qui dietro l'angolo e ce ne infischiamo, che tristezza! L'album "Profili Svelati" dei Matia Bazar ha dato stoffa alle strabilianti capacità vocali di questa magnifica donna. Non solo "Grido d'amore", ma tanti altri brani in cui Roberta Faccani sperimenta le cose più estrose e particolari, dal gospel al jazz, da brani retro ed eleganti a brani con sound moderno. Veramente uno splendido gioiello della discografia italiana! Sono tra i primi ad essere indignati per il fatto che questa cantante eccezionale non abbia il successo che merita.

    • @bmp_giorgionegro
      @bmp_giorgionegro 4 місяці тому

      @@ElettraPierelli-ei6so Benvenuta nel "Roberta Faccani Fans Club"! 😊😊 La cosa che stupisce in particolare è che completamente autodidatta, un talento naturale: ci sono cantanti liriche che neanche in due secoli di studio riuscirebbero a fare la metà di quello che fa la nostra amata artista. Ecco un punto in comune che abbiamo, il sottoscritto e la Faccani: sebbene abbia alle spalle studi di Conservatorio ( ho preparato l'ottavo anno di pianoforte ma l'esame non l'ho mai dato) per quanto riguarda gli altri strumenti che suono sono completamente autodidatta: ci accomuna quindi il "daimon" ( in senso greco) per la musica e appena trovo artisti che mi assomigliano sotto questo profilo, li accolgo a braccia aperte! Se poi sono della qualità eccelsa di Roberta allora è l'apoteosi! Concordo quindi su tutto quanto ha detto e sono felice di aver trovato una nuova fan di Roberta. Non conosco bene il resto della sua produzione artistica, ma approfondirò. Per quanto riguarda la sua critica all'italiano medio che se infischia, mi trova perfettamente d'accordo: se non sei sui media mainstream notte e giorno non sei nessuno, per fortuna UA-cam concede margini di visibilità ma l'italiano medio viene imboccato culturalmente, difficilmente cerca e apre BENE le orecchie, nella fase della sua formazione personale è letteralmente plagiato da concetti e preconcetti vecchi di secoli che sono funzionali ad un certo tipo di sistema. I divergenti... beh.... quelli vengono lasciati nella penombra, quando va bene. Sa perché? Perché la loro stessa esistenza "artistica" rischia di sparire, se confrontati all'artista puro, vero, non indottrinato. Basta vedere i Conservatori come sfornano marionette ogni anno, sapendo bene che non avranno futuro e se lo avranno, sarà solo in qualche buia aula di un fatiscente istituto, a suonare pensieri altrui, come automi. Mi scusi lo sfogo, ma le Sue apprezzabili riflessioni mi hanno stimolato, e La ringrazio per questo. Continui a seguirmi, non voglio perdere persone come Lei. Grazie.
