Ubuntu has become stale as Canonical puts resources into other projects. Although some other distros based on Ubuntu have picked up the slack. It's also interesting that Mint now offers a version based on Debian called LMDE. But it all comes down to what works best for your personal use case! For me it's the Fedora MATE-Compiz spin, that's not a recommendation it's just what works for me.
