10 minutes of Hidden Hallway ambience (from the Rockett games)
Переглядів 815 місяців тому
Spend 10 minutes in the dreamlike world of the Hidden Hallway of Whistling Pines Jr. High. It's honestly one of my all-time favorite ambient music loops. This was the "backstage" the player could visit at any point during most of Purple Moon's games in the Rockett series: Rockett's Tricky Decision, Rockett's Secret Invitation, etc. (all of them except Rockett's New School).

This music composition is heavily inspired by my favorite contemporary composers, such as John Adams, Steve Reich and Julia Wolfe especially. Post-minimalism for the win! Most of it was originally laid down in 2016, but I picked it up again recently and tweaked it into what you hear now. The soloistic accordion moments were the last things to come into the fold. Theory: The whole house is a metaphor of a whole old Mac computer or physical part of it which catches on fire. Chalmers is the personification of the old operative system within it and Seymour and Agnes are its human user. Chalmers entering in and out represents turning the computer on and off which is why the startup sound plays when he rings the doorbell. The old operative system is too sluggish to notify any serious defect of its hard drive (the oven) so Seymour notice something's wrong but decided to ignore it before Chalmers (the operative system) start investigate and detects potential issue which he notifies but Seymour rejects to do any actions. The ham could be represented as a disc whose program is still running which Seymour decided to switch disc (to hamburgers) with the previous program still running in the background and causing further problems. The conversations with confused Chalmers (the operative system) represents the user trying to continue running the new disc while the program of the previous disc is continue causing issues which the operative system is getting aware of. Seymour returning to the kitchen represents the user returning to check the damaged hard drive which is getting critical by this point which Chalmers notifies it but Seymour keeps rejecting it. Agnes notice that the house (the computer) is on fire which Seymour denies before Chalmers leaves (turning off the computer).

    It never stops to amaze me how many different ways there are to enjoy BDO. Played this game for 10k+ hours and never even read a single knowledge article I think, but now I might chech them out once in a while. Small thing you didn't add was that knowledge (points) do activly affect everyone (not just people who like to read lore and RP), you gain both item drop rate and energy! I truly hope you'll release more BDO content, lore or otherwise and maybe even try out different parts of the game you haven't experinced yet. I do recommend atleast persuing some gear, just finishing a seasonal would probably be enough,. It would increase your acces to new and probably alot more interesting knowledge very quickly! Even just reacing lvl 56 would let you do something called an awakening/succesion questline that involves an character specific story that basically reveals your backstory.

    • @dressupgeekout
      @dressupgeekout 5 місяців тому

      Thank you for the thoughtful comment! Yeah, a whole bunch of the game opens up once you actually have a gear score worth anything -- which has personally never been a priority for me, hah. But that might change Soon (TM). I too would like to make more BDO content! I'm trying to come up with some ideas.

    • @Kiriyuu.
      @Kiriyuu. 5 місяців тому

      @@dressupgeekout Something I think the BDO community doesn't have and I personally always wanted to see is lore content, preferably individual stories from the BDO world told in way similar to someone like vaatividya. Or maybe animated/drawn picutres to set the mood, while simply telling a slightly dramatised version of the story. Most of the BDO lore content I have seen is just people reading out the knowledge entries, which i found dry and not very gripping. I think BDO has still alot to offer for content creators and I hope you find something to enjoy! :)

      Yeah, you're absolutely right. This is definitely the most salient criticism of my video I've received thus far. I could have gone the extra mile and included that footage, but simply didn't. I don't have a good excuse for not making the edits myself, apart from "I was done and just moved on to the next thing." I did flag Zimen's book on the Internet Archive for bad metadata, however.

    Great essay! I would only add that people need to apply logic when citing sources. A good way to know a source is editorializing is when the source uses potentially subjective words, like “melodious”. Unless the author is clear that he doesn’t mean “euphonious” (something that sounds nice), and defines what he/she means by “melodious”, it’s not really “science. IMHO, it also depends on how important the thesis is. A high school essay? No big deal. A PhD thesis? That’s a big deal.

    • @dressupgeekout
      @dressupgeekout 7 місяців тому

      The "melodious" thing in particular fascinates me, and drives at the main point of my video. The Wikipedia article does use the word "melodious" AND cites a source which also uses the word "melodious," AND YET the article is still incorrect on the matter. Subtle stuff!

    It also helps to get out and see wolves yourselves. I'm lucky to be friends with someone who runs a private wolfdog rescue sanctuary. Over half of the animals he cares for are full blooded wolves. Howling is definitely communication and the range of complexity of it I doubt will ever be fully catalogued. The wolves woke us all up in the night with uproarious howling and we couldnt figure out why. A couple days later off property and farther up when we were on the way back to the property from the meat run, we stopped as a big female moose crossed the road down the mountain. The lead handler and I immediately thought the same thing. The moose had to of come in range of the sanctuary on her way down to the river and the wolves were telling us and everyone else that. I also get the feeling wolves howl to express emotions. I was giving Patches attention one time, good neck pets and the like, and she was wagging her tail, getting all excited, then starting howling and everyone joined in, even me. The thing is it seems to be to lay out wolf communication in rational terms is like trying to square a circle because for them it is deeply emotional. That's not to say we cant learn anything by reading, but observing them and trying to gauge the context is very hard and important.

    • @dressupgeekout
      @dressupgeekout 7 місяців тому

      You're lucky to have been in such close proximity to wolves. The fact we have hundreds and hundreds of pages from people who HAVE spent countless hours with wolves definitely supports your point: it *is* hard to unpack something as complex as wolf communication.

    • @aWolffromElsewhere
      @aWolffromElsewhere 7 місяців тому

      @@dressupgeekout Indeed. They definitely know what they are saying to us and each other. I think if one were to spend enough time around wolves, and more importantly, individuals they come to know, they can understand them. I emphasize the emotional because wolves dont have an language apparatus, they dont use rational thought. They have thought and consciousness for sure, but they dont have the language apparatus that allows humans to abstract themselves into insanity. Its a complicated way of saying translating what wolves are saying to eachother in words will always be inconsistent and incomplete. I prefer the way wolves communicate because they are totally honest. Its unabated expression of their true selves.

The main one relates to the plethora of "Stray Story Explained!!" videos which dominated Stray discourse on UA-cam at the time. Theory about the eyes: they are squinting at the sun. The examples you gave in this video showed a correlation between how much they lift their heads, and how much their close their eyes. And just in general, the resting position of the eyelids seems lower when tilting your head. If I relax my face when looking up, my eyes aren't as open as when looking forward.

    • @dressupgeekout
