    That is the most beautiful Axleson Lathe I’ve ever seen. I’ve been using your kerosene trick for a few years now And it works great. I did some trading with a gentleman and had a Cincinnati No. 1 tool and cutter grinder follow me home. I couldn’t help but wonder what Don would think of it ! Some bubba painted it bright green, and of course it’s missing everything but the center arms, but I managed to sort out the original wiring and get it humming along nicely, nice and quiet. Bearings are in great shape. And I learned alot about wiring machinery back in 1954-56 ! It’s got a lot of surface rust but it’s coming along thanks to watching all your videos I know just what to do. I think the original color was a darker machine green. I’m just happy nobody “upgraded it “ to VFD’s and ruined the original wiring. They hacked it up a little and wired in a “rotary phase converter” but as it turns out the motor is a delta Rockwell 15 drill press motor. Not that I have one. But it’s interesting to say the least. 1/2 hp 3ph.

      The Hoppes #9 with a brass brush was the best I found for stains and the kerosene wipe downs fade them out. This Axelson was heavily stained by the old tapping fluids. Keeping the machines looking good distracts from my usual clutter. The cutter grinder makes it so I do not have to have a big investment in cutters, the plastic mold shop did not have all that many end mills and such considering the work he had to do. Being into repair, the grinder rapidly paid for itself and at the same time greatly increased capability of my shop in a super competitive market in the 1990s. My old grinder with just a work head was $4500 in 1990, the best machine purchase I ever made and now the machine I have had the longest.

    Those hubs can be gotten, new, on eBay for $25. I bought a bunch of them. I just wish that the arbor on my surface grinder wasn’t just a tiny but oversized. I’ve got eight hubs and gad to bore the taper on all of them to fit. Then I had to shorten to screw on the front of the hubs and make a special left hand 16x 1.5 mm t nut to hold it on. A real pain.

    What I do with my spring tap followers (I forget exactly what they’re called right now) is to flat the tip to fit the jaws of the tap wrenches. So they may have an 0.125” dia flat, or larger depending on the wrench. I can leave the point if it’s a really small tap with a small wrench. It’s frustrating that most taps I have no longer have the center hole. I suppose manufacturing is different these days. Usually they have a pointed back instead. Also, my general tap holders either the chuck don’t have holes in the back either, so I have to take them apart and put my own in. Eh, a minor problem, though an annoying one. At least I got the DRO on my surface grinder finished with a 1um scale.

      I bought this old gearhead lathe for salvaging materials and roughing out parts for the toolroom lathe but found this smallest Axelson lathe to be remarkably nimble in the carriage controls and the heavy tail stock with its two-speed rack and pinion gear drive. The compound rest being extra wide does cause clearance problems. I have my surface grinder almost ready to go, I have not used it in the last several years.

    To get some idea of pricing. The buck 3 jaw, two piece jaws adjust-tru chuck, With the buck D1-3 back, both in forged steel, cost me a total of just over $2,000 about two and a half years ago. Worth every penny though. I adjust with a 1” high precision (0.00005” accuracy) pin and can get it to 0.0002” concentricity, reliably.

    • @1monarch10ee
      @1monarch10ee 2 місяці тому

      The forged steel body chucks cost more and from what I have seen, and really hold up better than the cast and semi steel versions. I have a used forged steel 12" Bison 3jaw plain back chuck that required just a jaw regrind, very little internal wear with no apparent maintenance. I have the supplied with the machine 8" D1-3 direct mount Cushman 3 jaw chuck numbered to the machine that had near zero run-out, needs a re-grind running over.002". I found it more productive having scroll chucks running at least reasonably repeatable.

    • @melgross
      @melgross 2 місяці тому

      @ yup. These are pretty hard steel. They wear very little. I tell people who are skeptical about their worth, to look up the max speed differences between the iron chucks and the steel ones on the same manufacturer’s site. It’s pretty shocking. Even if you don’t hit those speeds, the steel models have better gripping power even at moderate speeds. Some people don’t understand the point of high quality though. I saw one guy who just bought a new chuck explaining how to carefully sand down the parts of a two part chuck jaw so they weren’t so tight when dis and reassembling them! Some people shouldn’t have good things.

      @@1monarch10ee funny how that is. You never know what will get people’s interests. Also I now understand why I didn’t see updates on the other channel. It’s a shame that people are so screwed up, isn’t it? Now that I have my small 6x12 surface grinder I’ve been upgrading it. There’s no way to cover the exposed dovetails on the vertical component, so I’m making my own, after a lot of handwringing and about six different design ideas. Also I’ve been buying fixturing to allow me to use it as a cutter/grinder. I think I mentioned that before. I did make a mistake in eBay. I’ve used several big Cincinnati cutter grinders many years ago and forgot how big and heavy they are. So I bought a Cincinnati three way fixture with mounted vise. Yikes! Way too big and heavy for my small grinder. So I guess I can use it on my mill for small work. I always did want a three way vise for that. So I’ve bought small fixtures from old American makers.

      Hi, thanks! I have had 2 channels just disappear, dee dee 3500 subscribers and now Don Dyar Machining. The problem is the fake or staged machinist channels are losing views running out of content and having trouble selling useless products to the so called hobby machinist community. This has filtered in this venue in the last 10 yrs from the fake machinist forums practical machinist being the leader in the revenue from import junk and bad content. I really cant recommend very many commercial products anyway as I make my own cutting tools not relying totally on modern carbide insert tooling as most all do. The interest in mechanical subjects is way down, motorcycles are dead and vintage cars is going down. The machinist channels for profit are in trouble and want people like me off. Here is the joke-the pay is $4 per one thousand views. Machine shop time in WA state $200 and hour if you are good. No one skilled in their right mind would make videos, it is a huge distraction for work flow. Putting effort into a channel just to have it disappear, with no response will not happen a 3rd time. I will pay for a podcast channel and views will pay for my content if they so choose. So, I run slide shows and not cut metal here.
