This video features photos from a stunning display of northern lights from Sunday, August 11, 2024 as seen from the Dead River Basin, Negaunee, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
All photos were shot with an iPhone 14 Pro on night mode, no tripod, no additional editing. All colors were visible to the naked eye, although current smartphones make the colors appear more intense.
Starting about 11:30pm, the lights were visible as pale streaks to the north, but by 1am or so, they were overhead, to the north, east, and west. By about 3am, the deep red colors came out. By this point, most of the sky was involved, with colors extending maybe 45-50 degrees from the southern horizon. Most of the best shots were directly overhead, to the west, and to the east.
It was a wonderful display of northern lights, one of the best I have ever seen.
And I didn't have to go anywhere to see them--took most of these photos right from the yard of the cabin!
