Welcome to Spotting With Sam, your hub for rail action around New Zealand, and eventually the world.
This channel was previously known as "Mr Muffin Trains", but after I grew tired of that I changed it to it's current name. This is why some of my older videos are still branded under that.

Rusty Relics - DBR's 1200 and 1213 northbound
Well well well, what have we here? While the biggest news in the NZ rail circle recently is the arrival of KiwiRail's DM class in the South Island, in the North Island, 2 much older locomotives are the star of the show.
Today (24/10/2024) DBR's 1200 and 1213 began making their way north from Palmerston North after being in storage at Hutt Workshops. These two have definitely seen their fair share of service, with 1213 being renowned on the Hokitika shunt, and 1200 as one of "the twins" (a name it adopted while banking trains from Paekākāriki to Wellington with DBR 1267).
Whatever happens with these two will be definitely interesting, lets see what the future holds!

I thought it was high time I changed the channel's trailer, as the old one has all footage from my old content, and doesn't reflect the higher quality standard I'm trying to reach. So sit back, relax, and enjoy! Also, a big thanks to all of you for getting this channel to 500 subscribers, I'm quite frankly shocked we even made it this far, but cheers everyone! - Credits - Music: Blue Grey Blue ...
KiwiRail at work on the NIMT

Well, looks like I'm back in the saddle again. After nearly half a year away, I decided to gather up some of my footage, and make a new video. Most of these clips are under a month or so old, with 2 being from a bit earlier. Enjoy! -You'll just have to excuse a few after edit mistakes I found, I'm sure once I start regularly uploading again, quality will improve as I get back into the swing of ...
New Zealand's railways in the Manawatu

Well, I've been busy the past couple of days filming and editing this, but I'm pleased finally bring it to the public. Looking on the list of videos on my channel, I noticed it's been a year since I've done a freight compilation video in the Manawatu, so I realized it was high time I make one, and put it up. As a bonus, my clips to Steam Incorporated's excursion yesterday are also at the end of...
KiwiRail DH 2845 fresh from Hutt
Переглядів 5479 місяців тому
Hello everyone, and welcome to another video. Just a quick one again today! I'd actually forgotten this DH had come down to Hutt, so I was quite pleased to hear it was heading back up this morning. By the sounds, there's a few more foamers out chasing it, so keep an eye out for their photos and videos too!
Old gold - Steam Incorporated Whanganui bound
Переглядів 6449 місяців тому
Just a short video of Steam Incorporated heading north out of Feilding, bound for Whanganui. Been awhile since I've seen a train in Feilding, let alone a heritage excursion, so I decided this morning it was too good to miss. Please excuse the background chatter, there was a quite excited local next to me who had stopped for a chat. I'm sure he enjoyed the train just as much as I did.

Hello everybody, and welcome back to another video! After a recent visit to Christchurch, I decided to try and do some trainspotting and get some shots of the South Island without any DM's roaming around (They are expected to arrived some stage this year I believe?). This video is a bit shorter than what I'd hoped, as I had to make an unplanned visit to Christchurch Hospital, but I'm alright no...
Tangiwai - 70 years on
Переглядів 1 тис.11 місяців тому
70 years ago today, New Zealand had the worst rail accident in it's History. A lahar washed out the railway and road bridge at Tangiwai, which in turn caused an express passenger train bound for Auckland to go flying into the river below, killing 151 of it's passengers and crew. Today, I decided it would be nice to pay tribute to those lost, and go up there and put this little video together. I...

Hello everybody, and welcome back. It's been two months since my last upload I know, but rest assured I'm trying my hardest to work in more uploads with my new job. At least at the end of it it'll be worth waiting as I hope to buy myself some new camera gear, because I do need an upgrade in terms of video quality that's for sure! Anyways, enjoy this quick little video I filmed last Friday, and ...
End of a 24 year era - Retirement of the S class carriages
Переглядів 2,1 тис.Рік тому
On the 28th of July 2023, KiwiRail's S class carriages ran one last planned Capital Connection before the new stock comes in on Monday. The carriages have been around for quite a long time, in New Zealand and abroad, so their retirement is understandable. Let's see what the future and the new stock has to bring to the table. Enjoy!
Back from across the ditch - Martinus DC's return to New Zealand
Переглядів 585Рік тому
After quite the break from uploading, I'm back! Today's video is one that I hoped would be a bit longer, but due to issues up in Hamilton, that wasn't the case. Today I decided to chase Martinus DC's 4571 and 4041 from just south of National Park to Feilding as they are off to the Hutt workshops in Wellington for recertification so they can be used here again. As I said before, due to issues in...
Steam returns to the Manawatu - Ja 1271 on the Heartland Flyer
Переглядів 702Рік тому
Finally, some more steam content! Great to see a bit more steam action this year, especially round my neck of the woods. Todays chase was only a short one, I wanted to really only test out my new film camera (not video, but actual 35 mm film!), and I thought a steam locomotive was nothing better to test it on! Despite only being a short chase, I reckon we got some good shots, and even tried a f...

These two served Queensland. Sadly they later were exported to Zamibia
And Kiwirail insist that there is no market for intercity passenger rail in New Zealand.
Love this place. Back in the early/mid 90's me and my dad used to sneak in there on Sundays and look around (security was WAY more lax back then). The first time we went in we found a shed full of 10+ withdrawn DJ locomotives - that was an amazing find, because I'd never seen one IRL and we assumed who whole class had already been scrapped. We also found the mangled remains of DX5362, which had been in a major accident many years earlier, and was eventually rebuilt as DXR8007.
I saw those two sitting in the yard at Wellington last week along with 30071, I guess all three had just arrived from Hutt Works. Be interesting to see what's going to happen with them.
Ah right. Looks like 071 is back in Palmerston North now, and the DBR's funnily enough ended up in Taumarunui of all places at that rail group up there, least they're away from the salty sea air now?
DC 4421 is alive and well somewhere in New Zealand and preserved. Its exact whereabouts are unclear.
It's stored at the Mission Bush steel mill these days, along with DA 1429. But you're right, it's definitely still around.
@@SpottingWithSam Hopefully those two get moved to a heritage railway soon
Ooohh, exciting! Hopefully, we'll be able to see them running up again! I especially want to see 1267 again!
I hope so too, but one thing's for sure they'll need a fair bit of work, especially 1200! By the sounds of things they've arrived in Taumarunui, which is the final destination for these two for now, goodness knows what'll happen with them there, lets hope the vandals don't find out they're there.
@SpottingWithSam yep, maybe that's a sign that we shouldn't really upload things for youtube, because the vandals can see our videos.
@@Kiwitrailchannel Looks like they've been put undercover though, so hopefully this makes vandalism a little more tricky.
yes.no more pulp trains and less drivers in palmy. and none in Napier.
It's a shame, seems the railways are thinning out their trains and services as more companies choose to go by road, what a shame..

Wow, what an excellent UA-cam channel trailer showing various railroad trains in New Zealand! Greetings from the United States once again, and congratulations on 500 subscribers! I am so glad to be a big fan of yours. Keep up the amazing work!
Cheers mate!
Congrats of 500 subscribers, Sam! 🎉

Congrats on 500! Love the new trailer.

great stream sam.good old fielding.
Cheers! It’s not a bad wee town that’s for sure.
Great video Sam.
Thanks!
Great video Sam! Good to see a new upload. Cool to see 4853 being towed on 234.
Cheers Riki! Was good to see it being towed! Just a shame I didn't check my camera beforehand haha...
Please excuse the small error in the caption on the first clip, I meant 30203, not 30232. Whoops!
1267 was my favourite because of the years it spent running the Wairarapa service.
That's interesting, I never knew that!
I swear I've seen a silver fern railcar somewhere near Waikato
@@Kiwitrailchannel Interesting, although I suspect it wasn’t a Silver Fern. All the 3 Silver Fern railcars are stored at Pahiatua. What you saw was most likely one of the Silver Star carriages.
@@SpottingWithSam It was a full 2 car set, rusted looking and no wheels. I'm sure I did see it somewhere near Waikato! Also, I've seen an SD carriage near the Cambridge motorway. Not too sure what the route is, but it seems that the carriage is owned by some industrial business.
@@Kiwitrailchannel That’ll be the Silver Star I can guarantee it. Those two didn’t go overseas when they were stored by A&G Price, unlike the rest of the fleet.
Nice DL horn at 1:35
Cool variety of passenger trains in the capital city of New Zealand, and great KiwiRail diesel locomotives! Excellent footage!
Thanks! :)
Isn't it interesting how both steam and diesel locomotives often work together on railroads in New Zealand? Interesting footage once again!
It's very interesting indeed. We've certainly got a strong heritage scene over here that's for sure!
@@SpottingWithSam Fabulous!
Looking down the midway at 2:01 brings back memories of my time there in early 80s. Great times great people
Hey there, Sam! Long time, no see. How are you doing nowadays? I am doing great. Glad to see you carry on uploading footage of diesel and electric trains in New Zealand! These locomotives look interesting. I just want to let you know that I still enjoy your railroad videos as I have been a fan of your UA-cam channel for a while. Well done, and keep up the excellent work!
Hey, thanks for dropping a comment! I'm very well thanks, been busy with university and everything but things are chugging along smoothly so to speak. I'm hoping to start getting videos out again soon, as in a month or so I'll have the time again to go out and get footage which I'm very pleased about. I really appreciate you, and everyone else's patience while I've been away, but hopefully things will be back to normal soon! :-)
My favorite DBR is 1257 because 1, it has a horn that, well, lets just say that it makes a tune that wouldn't really meet NZR standards and 2, it is the only Kiwirail branded DBR. Hopefully, she reunites with her mates at somewhere like the GVR.
1267 was very cool indeed, great sounding horn like you said.
Im so sad 1267 is retired. It has the most unique horn I've ever heard. Kiwirail should've kept it for intercity or shunting duties. I've seen a video where it was hauling a heritage train, and man, it was shining like a star! Now look at the state of her, what a waste of a good loco.
Have they moved yet? I thought they were going to Africa.
As of now sadly not, they're all in Hutt Workshops (besides 1199 and 1282 which operate at the Goldfields Railway on passenger operations), and 1200 is also for sale on Trade Me currently.
I can't wait to see Glenbrook's preserved DC classes in action. Wonder what's taking quite a long time?
Looks like by the sound of things she's nearly ready!
nuh uh
What do you mean by that?
@@SpottingWithSam they are back
@@aklrailfan2278 Indeed they are.
Very nice! I do like the EFs and they look really smart now. I only wish that I could have seen one on my last trip to NZ, but alas, I didn't manage to see much of anything at all until arriving at Picton for the ferry.
Thanks! The EF’s really are quite cool. If you stayed in the South Island during your trip you wouldn’t’ve seen them, as they are based between the Palmerston North - Hamilton section of the North Island Main Trunk. Hopefully you catch something next time!
@@SpottingWithSamRegrettably, age is catching up with me so it is probably unlikely that I'll be able to visit NZ again. A pity, as it is a lovely country. On my first visit in the 1970s, I managed to travel on the Silver Star and the Silver Fern between Auckland and Wellington. On the last visit, we actually stopped for a few hours at the Flat Hills Café which is alongside the Main Trunk Line at Ohingaiti, but did not even see a diesel hauled train- such is life! Best wishes from Britain.
@@MervynPartin That’s a shame! I’m glad you enjoyed visiting us. Travelling on the Silver Star would’ve been excellent, I’ve only ever been on the Silver Ferns, and they are excellent as well. I myself have also been to the Flat Hills Cafe, great wee spot in there. What a pity you didn’t see anything! Sadly the trunk isn’t as busy as what it used to be, but there’s still a few services a day.
Great Video Sam, Great to see the EF's again, I love the livery, thanks for sharing
Thanks! I've certainly missed seeing them as a regular sight, so it's good to have them back. Glad you enjoyed!

Great video., Thanks for sharing. Cool fact about the EF Locos is that they were built in Loughborough, Leicestershire (I used to work next to the factory where they were built) Some of the scenery on my OO layout is inspired from that area! Liked and Subbed. Cheers, Andy
Glad you enjoyed! That's really cool you worked near where they were built! Is the factory still being used today? Thankfully the EF's are up and running again these days, and there's a refurbishment program in place getting them back into tip top shape. Speaking of the test trains, I saw once just the other day which I'll probably release at some stage. That's really cool! I'll check out your channel and watch some of your model railway videos on there, it looks very interesting :) Cheers. - Sam
@@SpottingWithSam Hi Sam, The factory I think is being used? The company that made the Locos was called Brush Traction, Loughborough. If you google Brush Transformers, as they are now called, you can see factory. I worked around there in the 1990's, we lived about a 10 minute drive away.
Good video, like!
Thanks!
Great catch mate, A DH is something I haven't caught myself on film yet.
Cheers Jamie! I was pretty pleased to catch it as this was also my first one. I think 2822 is down in Wellington at the moment? It came down the other day on 221. Could be worth trying to catch.
Nice video
Thank you very much!
I think that it was in 1975 when I rode the Silver Fern from Wellington to Auckland- a very enjoyable journey. That was after an overnight run on the Silver Star to Wellington before a tour of South Island. Happy days!
By some of the stories I've heard, there has certainly been many happy memories made on the Silver Fern. Definitely good all 3 are still around.
Great Catch Sam! Congratulations On Catching Her.
Cheers. This was my first DH I've ever caught so when I heard it was coming, I knew I had to see it.
Good one Sammy!
