When my dad bought our first ever DVD player we got it from Currys and a selection of free dvds with it from Warner bros. These included Romeo must die starring Jet Li, Lethal Weapon 4, US Marshalls starring Tommy Lee Jones and I think there was another one, but I can't remember what it was.

Great discussion everyone. My first ever VHS was Thunderbirds volume 13: The duchess assignment and Attack of the alligators. My first ever dvd was Spearhead from space. But I can't remember what my first ever blu ray was as I've bought too many of them!🤣

For me, the video format will be forever synonymous with the joy of first owning those television shows which, hitherto, had to be relived solely in one's memory; this being so, the late eighties/early nineties was a period of both discovery (of stories/episodes never seen) and rediscovery (the opportunity to rekindle and enhance the experience of those previously watched ). Due to Doctor Who releases being a little on the pricey side, the first video I ever bought was actually Steptoe and Son, released in a format whereby each tape comprised three episodes. Much like another all-time favourite of mine, Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, the remembered laughter came just as easily, but was accompanied by the realisation that unexpected pathos and dismay were every bit as woven into the stories as was humour. When my Doctor Who collection began, with The Brain of Morbius, this new, adult-derived ability to discern deeper narratives meant that everything seemed like a first viewing. For Doctor Who, in particular, this period was an unqualified joy, the letters 'V', 'H' and 'S' still evoking my best ever memories of being a fan. Although hugely enjoying of, and grateful for, the wealth of general insight provided by DVD extras (especially with regard to our favourite show), any sentiments associated with DVDs remain a mere appendment to those that I've described in relation to video; it seems that the adage 'first come, first served' is as applicable to the appreciation of home entertainment formats as it is to most other things. Nevertheless, I'm familiar with most (and greatly approving of all) the varied DVD examples showcased by the panel, genuinely touched by the pride of ownership, and the fond memories shared. Special mention, however, must go to Gary's boxed set of CHiPs, ringing as it did, some wonderful, nigh on fifty year old bells! This was a great show, perhaps my earliest memory of one which we all looked forward to, sliding, in familial unison, onto the sofa or into chairs, to watch a delightful hour in which thrills and spills went hand in hand with good honest values like friendship and loyalty. Shown, in the UK, on Sunday teatimes, if memory serves. Dear God, Sunday teatimes! Black Beauty, Boy Dominic, Kidnapped (with David McCallum!), Smuggler (with Oliver Tobias!), to say nothing of those BBC dramatizations of classic books; not a single one of any aforementioned do I own! Why can't I rid myself of the feeling that, over the coming weeks, I'll have reason to revise my indifference to the DVD format? The first film I ever watched on DVD was The First Great Train Robbery. It was also the first DVD that I had to suffer from disc rot. Thankfully, the second was also the last (fingers crossed), that being the 1967 version of Casino Royale.

Speaking of Tigon films, I watched Island of Terror a couple of weeks ago - online and for free, with ads every ten minutes. When I first saw that in the 1980s I thought it cheap rubbish, quite entertaining, nothing more. However, seeing it again in recent years I've thoroughly enjoyed it, appreciating it as a very professionally made, at times highly effective, cheap sci-fi thriller. It's one I'm considering buying on Blu-ray, along with The Sorcerers, and maybe even The Blood Beast Terror, another that I thought complete rubbish the first time around in the 1980s, but seen again online have appreciated far more.

Great show. Many thanks, Dan, Gary, Matt, Chris, Jon and Tzvi. Ha ha, yes, I remember Hawk the Slayer. I took that out of our local video rental shop more times than I can remember. Or maybe it was just a few times, but I watched it repeatedly when we had it. Oh, I loved it! By chance on a family holiday around then I visited Thor's Cave in the Peak District, visited by Jack Palance in the film for some nefarious purpose, the details of which I forget. I've not seen it since the 1980s. No, I tell a lie, I saw it again in the early 2000s, and in the cold light of what little maturity I may have gained in the intervening years, it seemed quite silly, like something Terry Pratchett ought to have been taking the mickey out of. Maybe if I saw it again I'd be equally disappointed, or maybe I'll have come back around full circle, and would be able to see it for the thoroughly entertaining piece of nonsense that it probably is.

Thanks for the enjoyable stream. I think sitcoms are a thing of the past because producers are too scared of upsetting anyone on twitter. I never saw the last episode of One Foot in the grave because I knew Victor Meldrew died, but your conversation around it got me thinking of an alternate final episode of Keeping up Appearances where Hyacinth is revealed as a serial killer who had been bumping off postmen for 20 years and keeping their satchels as a trophy, which would explain the fear in the postman's eyes every time he sees her.

I'm loving my weekly fix of The Spacebook, I must confess I have a love hate relationship with Horror, I'm a bit of a wimp. I can do classic horror but I can't deal with body horror. I live in Adelaide South Australia. Aussie Matt Pott can confirm this ...we are the creepy Serial murder capital of the world. Perfect setting for a Stephen King novel. Small respectable city with an undercurrent of horror. If you are unfamiliar just google The Family murders in the 1970s, it will take you down a rabbit hole you will get lost in .

You've done it again guys. Loving the chat. For me JAMES BOND is in equal first place with Doctor Who as a favourite character. I really hope the next Bond movie reverts to spy thriller but with a sense of fun. For me Daniel Craig's movies were a mixed bag. Casino Royale was superb, but I miss the days when you left the cinema with a spring in your step and a smile on your face. NO TIME TO DIE certainly did not do that. Sean Connery IS JAMES BOND but jolly Roger Moore is MY BOND. A very close third is Pierce Brosnan. I'm glad to see he is starting to get a bit more love from fans lately. Jon.. no pressure mate but I'm hanging out for your next Indiana Jones chat👍

I saw this as a young teenager when it was on late at night on British TV in the 90s. I had no idea what it was about but the imagery and themes made it very memorable. I asked my dad about it and he said 'Cool car, and it was filmed at Portmerion in Wales. No we aren't going there, the price of entry is extortionate' 😂 When I asked him what it was about he said 'I think only the guy that made it knows that. Perhaps you have to make up your own meaning for it'. Pretty accurate I think.

Classic series and unlike other shows of the 60s it hasn't aged at all ...and is more relevant today than in the past ..CCTV ..mind control ..mysterious figures in charge etc. ...number 2 changes all the time to show that authority has no face and it does not matter who number 1 is as it could be anyone ...treat each episode separately as they are in their own world ...as for the ending it is entirely in keeping with the show ..surreal crazy and yes silly ...and we all know Number 6 will never escape ...nor indeed will we from Government surveillance....Be Seeing You..

Awesome show guys. I still have my very first VHS , Action Force The Movie, but all my others have been long replaced by DVD and even Blu Ray. Ian's story of working in Blockbusters , reminded me of a bit of my own on the entertainment counter at woolies. I kept back a few limited edition dvds for myself, not letting them anywhere near the public!!!! 😂

My favourite Maggie Smith films are The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Murder by Death, California Suite, The Missionary and A Private Function. She played the title character in 1984's Lily in Love, opposite Christopher Plummer, a film that I've not seen for well over thirty years, but which I remember being very good indeed. I really must seek it out. 1983's Better Late Than Never used to be on TV fairly regularly in the 1980s and 90s, but has since disappeared. In that she starred opposite David Niven and Art Carney. Another I should hunt down. I recently bought 1967's The Honey Pot on Blu-ray, starring Rex Harrison, with Maggie Smith sixth down the cast list. I've not watched it yet, I've never seen it, but in a sale for a fiver I was very happy to take a chance. I'm sure that her scenes alone will more than justify the purchase price.

Speaking of Columbo, I'm currently partway through the first season of one of his Mystery Movie stablemates, Banacek. It's not as good as Columbo, obviously - what is? - but I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Margot Kidder was in last night's episode and she was superb!

Great show. Many thanks, Dan, Tzvi, Ian, Chris, Gary and Jon. I've just been catching up. I tuned in towards the end, after watching 1935's The Desert Trail starring John Wayne. It was one of those partwork magazine DVDs, that I bought with several other John Wayne films last year in a charity shop's 4-for-£1 deal. I got this just to make up the numbers, not expecting much from it, being such an early one, and only 54 minutes long. The picture quality was terrible. It must've been from an earlier VHS release as the top of the picture kept bending across to the left. There wasn't even a menu page; the disc started playing straight after I put it in. And do you know what? I really enjoyed it! It's not going to win any awards or feature in any John Wayne fan's top ten list, but it was just roundly entertaining. A good script, a straightforward good story, with good performances. For the picture quality, I ought to re-donate it and rely on YT for a rewatch, but things do tend to disappear from there, so I expect I probably won't.

This Podcast is fast becoming a must watch for me along with Jon's excellent Channel. Covering all Classic Media and Movies & TV in an informative and entertaining manner. As a sidebar I miss real good mushy peas ( here in Australia good ones are hard to get. Being Welsh born ...Faggots and peas are a much missed staple ( unfortunately mention of " faggots" here is met with a puzzled look ). However here in South Australia we have a somewhat infamous mushy pea meal ( usually served from a food van in the early hours after a night out ). We call it a "Pie Floater" It's a delicious Australian meat pie served upside down in a plate of mushy peas, usually topped with Tomato Sauce. Food of the God's👍 PS on an amusing side note this post came with a warning from UA-cam regarding language. I am assuming the "F" word served with Peas in Wales is the culprit. pps note to Jon regarding your kind invitation to appear on your Channel. If ever you have an episode discussing Columbo, count me in. That's definitely in my wheelhouse

Fantastic show guys. I can't wait for more Red Dwarf. I've enjoyed the Dave stuff, the boys from the dwarf are still all great, but series 2-6 is some of the best TV of all time for me. I missed the very first episode, but a friend in primary school told me about a man with a H on his head, a man who was a cat and a man who ate his dead crew mates, so I've watched it from future echoes onwards!!! As for the different versions of the show in the works, I'm OK with it. I love the books and they were always a separate continuity from the show, then there was the Last Human book, which was heavily implied to be set in a parallel universe. Batman has been a massive part of my life. That's some great choices there John to read. I remember reading Knightfall as it came out, dreading what was about to happen to my favourite comic book hero, but loved that story so much, and also became a big fan of Bruce's eventual replacement.... Azbats!!!! As for favourite superhero films, nothing beats Batman Begins for me. I've never come out of the cinema so happy in my life. I finally saw the character I had been reading for years on screen. I really liked the Keaton films, but I always felt they were more Burton-esque takes, than a proper in depth, lore heavy, comic book take on Batman.

Servalan the Margaret Thatcher of the evil The Federation but Servalan was light years more attractive, cold, ruthless and merciless for dominance and galactic power.

I just have no desire to see anything at the movies. Not a big fan of Alien, only because the anxiety caused by jump scares is not my thing. Beetlejuice was just too silly. I’m finding myself going back and watching the old classic stuff. Not sure why. Loved listening to you guys. 😘

Before going with the wife and some friends to see Deadpool v Wolverine, I think the last movie I saw in the cinema was Rocketman, which kind of gives you an idea of how enthusiastic I've been about going back. Anyway, DvW was excellent, and the trailer for Alien: Romulus has me returning 2 weeks later to watch that. Next on my list is Beetlejuice 2 once I get back from my business trip. It had been fun getting to sit in front of the big screen again, but after these three films, I don't see anything tempting me back again for the moment.

What are the advantages of a B7 Blu-ray when it wasn't high definition to begin with? I think the crap space scenes could do with a tasteful remake, by this I mean similar shots but using a steady cam. That technology was available at the time but production was done on the cheap.

I do say Blake,s Seven having an awesome arch-enemy and principal villain, Servalan was well awesome in billions of ways and she is the ultimate female villain in sci-fi and she is also the best female arch-enemy and female arch-villain too and she is the one principal character to survive the finale much as she was not in the finale called Blake.

Many thanks, Dan and all. Typically great, in depth review. Fully agree with Simon about the contrived, 'glossy' nature of the production and with Sarah about the largely unconvincing, uninspiring cast. Always greatly appreciate Ian's insights as a film maker, as I actually find myself being more exacting when watching things now, as a result of his influence! Nevertheless, Dan's and Culture Casino's assessment, of the well intentioned, earnest effort made here, is impossible to discount. Consequently, I find myself ambivalent about Romulus. On the one hand, I was glad to have seen it and pleased that it was made, yet, on the other, felt that it was neither necessary nor contributary to the franchise overall. However, it definitely had the feel of an 'Alien' movie, with its excellent sets, and a tone at least aspiring to that of an original rightly referred to by Simon as a work of art. I remember, when seeing (the Bond film) Moonraker in 1979, being distracted by the trailer for Alien and, even as an eleven year old, being intrigued by the minimalist nature of it. My positive expectation when I saw it, several years later, was wholly fulfilled, and I felt throughout that anything could happen, that the necessarily slower pace meant that, when the thrills came, they came at the right time. Such was not the case with Romulus. The whole thing reminded me slightly of what was, effectively, a remake of the first Star Wars film in 2015 by an unimaginative Disney, the company seeming to think that any ersatz offering would be sufficient for a fandom hungry for a return to 'the real thing'. There were many references to 'past glories' in Romulus, but that quickly became a problem, as the film was never allowed a sense of self. Even the slow pace of the first forty minutes seemed contrived, a means of replicating that of the original, whereas the briskness of the excellent sequel, Aliens, seemed similarly engineered after this point. I genuinely enjoyed the scenes with 'Ian Holm', impressed with the wealth of exposition and anticipation that they gave, deeming this particular homage to be tasteful, well judged and purposeful. All this, sadly, was rather spoiled by the supposed horror climax by way of the stupid pregnancy plot involving the new alien paradigm. Despite everything, though, I was left with an abiding sense that all the stops were pulled out for fans of the franchise, demonstrable appreciation of the loyalty showed over nearly five decades. Given the rarity of such a commodity these days, and in keeping with Dan's upbeat outlook, I'm inclined to take it in the spirit in which it was meant. Perhaps give these golden oldies the utmost deference by leaving well enough alone now; let the ongoing culture war be fought (and won) on the battleground of new franchises and fresh ideas. Can't wait for this! I'm glad I have a region-free blu ray player...the trailer looks fantastic! If B7 were remade in today's environment, it would be a complete horror show. One of the strengths of the original was threading the needle of a complex rebel/terrorist dynamic without a sledgehammer. Today's writers have no clue how to do that.

In America, some bloke called Michael did a sort of, soft or light re-boot of Blake's 7. It was called Crusade. That's been forgotten MORE than Blake's 7. 😊

I really liked the trailer for the new Blu-Ray and the poster art for it. To be honest not a big fan of Blake’s 7 as I’am of Doctor Who, not because I don’t like it. It’s because I haven’t watched any episodes. My parents watched it and loved it I think they used to show it in the same time slot that Doctor Who was in. The only childhood memory I have of it was of the classic final scene from the last ever episode. 😀 The price of the Blu-Ray is pretty good and the extras behind the scenes stuff and the rebooted special effects look ace, defo will be getting it. His Chris Chapman for the DW Blu-Rays involved in this. 🙂
