How I Make My Puppets

In this video you will see how I'm making three marionettes - inspired by three actors / movie characters. This marionette represents the TV character 'Sister Mary Clarence' (Whoopi Goldberg) from the Sister Act movie (1992). Puppet Portrait of Charlie Sheen

This is a puppet portrait of the famous actor Charlie Sheen, or, better said, Charlie Harper - a TV character from Two and a Half Men sitcom, because at the end of this video you can see the finished puppet wearing the typical Charlie Harper's outfit. I replaced the material which my heads used to be made from (as you could see in Dr. House video) by the new one - it's better for working. It ha...

Hi, I only created a limited number of these kits in 2022 to try it and see how it will go. It turned out that making these kits at home (I don't have a workshop, I live in a small apartment) wasn't a very good idea. I spent hours fixing air bubbles, there was resin dust everywhere, and the production was very expensive, too, so even with the relatively high price for a kit it wasn't profitable at all (I only just managed to break-even.). Therefore, I rather decided to make a tutorial on how to create each piece of a marionette from scratch, using materials like wood, clay, and metal fasteners, instead of ready-made kits.

Hi, to make a head, I first create a wooden core (which is inside the head) and then I use shredded paper mixed with water, water-based glue and starch powder to form a basic skull / basic shape of a head. The shredded paper is cheap and light, and when squeezed well, it can be very solid and firm. That’s why I use it to form a base. Once this base is completely dry and rock-hard, I sculpt the face features using an air-drying sculpting clay.

Hello, how big/tall was this marionette? I wished you still made the personal faces. I have 4 grandchildren that would LOVE them. I live in United States, Texas. Since you are ni longer doing the personlized faces, do you know of any Marinette Builders that would personlized a face here? Thankyou. Love your work.

The marionette from this DIY kit is approx. 31cm tall (12 inches). Even though I no longer make these kits, I have tutorials (one on Etsy as a digital book, and another one on Skillshare) on how to create a marionette of the same size (from wood and clay). When it comes to personalized marionettes, I don't make them anymore (maybe I will again in the future), but I am sure there are other puppet makers who make personalized marionettes, too. I don't know any of these puppet makers in person, but I've seen some of them advertising custom marionettes, or marionettes based on photos, e.g. on Etsy.

    • @Barbora.Mihokova

I haven't tried to use a 3d printer yet. I think the production would be way too expensive (as well as resin casting), which would make the price of these kits astronomical (plus shipping). That's why I rather decided to make a tutorial on how to create a marionette from scratch, using wood and clay.
