I just realized he worked with multiple girl groups who sang backup for him. Martha Reeves & The Vandellas for Stubborn Kind Of Fellow and he also co wrote Dancing In The Street. Then The Supremes sang on You're a wonderful one, the andates sang backup on baby don't you do it, while the blossoms sang backup for him on shindig and the T.A.M.I. Show.

As a teenager, I never missed an episode of Where The Action Is. That said, I doubt that I have seen this clip since the day it aired. It offers one of the clearest and best views of Jeri Lyn Stapleton, my favorite member of The Action Kids dance troupe, as she smiles and sings along to Marvin's song. Man I could kiss you. this was from a dick clark show called where the action is. To this day there isn't a documentary about a rock star that hasn't featured performances either from american bandstand, where the action is, or the saturday night beechnut show. The kids in the background were professional dancers.

Also, not too many years ago Smokey Robinson stated that Marvin Gaye early on sang soft Frank Sinatra-like songs but he saw a different side to his voice which did in fact finally sell songs. He said that Marvin was truly a stubborn kind of fella, in reference to convincing him to move on to the "Motown sound".
@@kevinkool3 Exactly! There was a fantastic Documentary on Showtime about Marvin Gaye, and that's where I saw this performance for the first time. There were also performances from Shindig and Hullaballoo. Some folks say that Smokey Robinson should sue Pharrell Williams because the melody of Happy sounds too much like Ain't That Peculiar.
If george had treated her with respect and hadn't strayed they would have stayed together..she adored him.Both George and Eric treated her badly. She is still a lovely woman.

George and Pattie were lovely together, but George began sleeping around. Eric sniffed her up, she fell for him & divorced George after 3 years (which broke her heart) and eventually married Clapton--who immediately began treating her like dirt. She was just a little game for Clapton, not anyone he really cared about. Funny thing, I never knew the backstory when I first heard "Beautiful Tonight," but I immediately loathed it. It seemed to me then and now that the lyrics were representing her as a fashion accessory and not as a truly loved partner. Now I know that they were going to a party held by Paul and Linda McCartney, and the sappy song *really* makes me sick...one more time when Paul shut George out in the cruelest way, not even inviting him, while Eric stabbed him in the back again. Honestly I'm not wild about Layla either. Just about any of George's tunes are so much better.
OMG, I remember this performance! It was on a show called "Where the Action Is." This is the show that featured Paul Revere and the Raiders. Loved that show and Marvin Gaye!❤

Oh here's another fun fact. Johnny O'Keefe a legend on Australian Music bought the Australian rights and called it "Action". In 1964 he did a talent concert and a 16 year old won who became a legend herself who was olivia newton-john. They had so much in common, doing multiple duets with folks, having songs that were banned in utah and being passionate about the enviornment.

If memory serves this show was a Dick Clark afternoon show separate from Bandstand. Loved this song and Marvin since a senior in H.S. 1963😊 in So. Cal.
