Model Car Minion

Приєднався 3 січ 2015
My efforts at model car building.
I began building my first model in the spring of 2014 and was hooked. My preferences are cars and trucks, with character or personal interest, from the '20's to the '70's. I set up a bench in my garage in the summer but moved into the basement for the winter of 2015/16. I started my UA-cam channel in January 2015 and appreciate your comments. Thanks for taking an interest in my involvement with this hobby. Please subscribe so you can follow along. ...............Steve. PS, Enjoy the build.

2024 Cartoon and Deformed Group Build, Meng Soviet Medium Tank - Part 1
This build went quickly and painted up well but I'm hoping to continue with it to give it a winter effect.
Thanks to PapaDan and Colonel Reb (Tommy) for putting on this group build again.

I got my very first car when I was 17, it was a green '62 Mercury Comet with a red interior and a white steering wheel. There is a promo model kit for this car but they are hard to find. Since this one has a close resemblance I am doing it in the colours of my first car.

There was one major fit issue with this kit in that the interior tub didn't fit up into the opening in the body shell. I had to shave about 1/8 of an inch off the sides of the interior tub and the body opening to get it to fit. Once that was done it went fairly well and I really like the look of it.
Aug 2024 stash update and chrome marker set

I found a model kit that is similar to the first car I owned and a set of chrome paint markers on Amazon.ca that work very well for a good price. Here is the link for the markers: www.amazon.ca/Silver-Liquid-Mirror-Chrome-Markers/dp/B09LY1KS7D/

My Dad's mechanic had one of these Thunderbirds back in the day and I remember him taking me for a drive in it. It is still stuck in my memory so I've been wanting to build this kit for a while. (It was going well until I tried to put the body over the interior tub, more about that in the next video.)

This build is based on a memory of a Jeep I saw in a dealership in California back around 1990. The kit goes together very well.

MENG World War Toons German Heavy Tank - Tiger 1 (Complete Build)
Wow that looks fantastic!
Thanks it turned out nice but I am going to do some winter weathering to it also.
Love it Steve!! Very cool mate👍
Thanks Paul, it's coming along well, lots of fun to paint.
I would have loved to assemble the '61 Galaxie 500, and have it done in cream with that Teaberry Gum Pink interior, together with the optional custom wheel treatment. Also, i seem to remember the '61 Mercury Monterey (sister car) version of this kit. Do YOU?
I don't know those kits, I wasn't into model cars back then. I bought this kit because it is similar to the 62 Comet I had and I can't find that kit.
Dang, Steve, that looks freakin' awesome as is!!! Love the colors and weathering, just some top shelf work, as always. Cannot wait to see how the winter camo comes out. Have a great weekend, buddy, and thank you for your support!
Thanks Tom, I'm hesitant to try but I want to learn how to make it look like it's got snow on it.
Hi Steve! Your T34 looks great. I'm looking forward to the winter camo.
Thanks Vince, It will be my first time to try a winter scene effect.
Looking great as always Steve the winter effect will look great great work.......................................................Ken
Thanks Ken, I hope I can pul off the snow effect. 🙂
Looking really nice Steve
Thanks Tom.
Very cool build Steve! Well done.
Thanks, I really enjoy painting and weathering these cartoon builds.
Very nice. Even with just the green and black craft paints alone it looks really nice. Did you say you sealed it with "hairspray". You'll have to educate me on that. Is that a good 'sealer'? Making progress with mine (slowly) but I want to include a terrain base for a simple diorama.
The hairspray acts as a coating between the two layers of paint, wetting it activates it and you can use a stiff brush to remove the second layer of paint to reveal the colour underneath. It's usually used with a colour coat over a rust colour to give a weathered effect. I'm hoping to spray white over the olive green and then brush it in some areas to reveal the green underneath. Just an idea I hope works. I'm going to try to add snow and ice also. Fingers crossed...although as Anne says...(crossing your fingers) "that doesn't work". lol.
@@ModelCarMinion Yes I remeber this technique now. I think I even thought of trying it out on my Archie-mobile but then opted for the 'salt technique'. I misunderstood you as using it as a clear coat.
This looks fantastic Steve! Your weathering looks "just right" I really enjoy these Meng Toon kits. Take care & have a great weekend. Tom S.
Thanks Tom, I'm tempted to stop here but I want to try for a snow camo effect.
Very nice Steve, great work so far!!
Thanks Oron, I hope I can get a good snow effect on it.
Looking awesome Steve. Can’t wait to see the snow camo. Thanks for joining buddy.
Thanks Dan, I hope I can pull off the snow effect. 🤔
Should be a nice build Steve I`ll be watching.............................................Ken
Thanks for the comment Ken, these go together quickly and are really fun to paint and weather.
Looks like a fun one, I built two Meng Toon tanks, and really enjoyed them.
They are all very similar and go together well. I enjoy painting and weathering them, really can't mess it up. 😀
Have a great build.
Thanks Daniel, I do enjoy these cartoon kits.
Very cool Steve👍
Hi Paul, these are fun to build and paint.
Nice T-34 toon tank kit choice Steve, have fun.
Thanks David, I always enjoy these cartoon builds, they don't have to be so serious.
Cool choice Steve. I'm not much for Soviet tanks, but the T34 is a tough looking one. Should be a fun build. Nice things to be gifted too. Great personalized plate.
These kits are easy to build and fun to paint, I'm going to try a winter camo pattern.
Nice gifts! That t34 tank will look good in winter camo. Can't wait to see it!
I was happy to find the winter camo pics, didn't want just another olive green tank. 😀
Very cool Steve, very anxious to see a tank done up in winter colors!!
Me too, I was glad to find some winter camo pictures, didn't want just another olive green tank. 😀
Nice shout outs Steve, Dario hooked you up too Nice kit for the GB, be following along buddy, 😎👍
Thanks Tom, I appreciate your support for all these (10) years.
@@ModelCarMinion There's not very many of the old gang left Steve
@@ramblers69 That's for sure, good to see PapaDan and Tommy back tho'.
That’s going to be a cool build. Can’t wait to see it finished.
Thanks, I'm anxious to start the build.
😊😊😊😊😊😊
Thanks for following along Charlie. 🙂
Thanks for the shout out 😍 Was just getting started on my own Meng deformed tank this morning thinking it was going to be a super quick build. But the joke is on me since I came to a critical part early in the build and, true to the theme, it was severely DEFORMED. Going to have to do some unplanned scratch building to fix it. Crossing fingers.
Sorry to hear that, I hope you are able to keep moving ahead with it.
@@ModelCarMinion Yes I will be able to recover but it's just wasting a lot of time. Do I get a bonus for having a Deformed kit to build a Deformed model. 🤕
Some great gifts from excellent builders, buddy, love that 3D printed holder and personalized plate, very very cool. Thanks for jumping in again on our GB, we both appreciate it greatly and fantastic choice of tanks, the T-34 builds up real nice and will look awesome in winter camo. I love seeing those whitewashed winter schemes on WWII planes/armor, just wicked as they come. Can't wait to see how yours turns out.
Thanks to you and PapaDan for hosting the build again. Can't wait to get started on the build.
Love the backstory and diggin everything about this piece of 3d art history brother Steve!🎸
Thanks for the comment, it's great to have this build to remind me of my first car with all its quirks.
Looks great Steve
Thanks Tim, it's a quick fun build.
Must add to stash. Thanks for the review.

@@ModelCarMinion saw it. Not sure which version I'd build.
Just got my kit,it gave me the shits so i threw it in the bin.lucky i have the real car 😂
Awesome build Steve ❤😊
Thanks for the comment Shawn.
Turned out great Steve. I love the late 50s early 60s Fords.
Thanks Kenny, those cars had style.
Hi Steve. It looks terrific. A nice memory for your 1st car.
Hi Vince, it does bring back good memories.
Nice kit Steve and nice job on it mate👍
Thanks Paul, it's a quick build but looks a lot like my first car.
Great build!!
Thanks for the comment Link, I appreciate it.
Really turned out nice Steve, 😎👍
Thanks Tom, I'm getting a good collection of my builds of real cars I've had
Pretty cool build of your first car. Cheers
Thanks Wayne, I now have builds for my first five cars. Lots of great memories and fun to look at them.
Looks great Steve. I love your attention to detail on the dashboard. Well done my friend! 😀👍🏻
Thanks for the comment Steven, the fine point chrome marker is very handy to do the trim.
?Great build Steve! I really like the colors that you used. They look "classy" on this body style. Take care Steve Tom S.
Thanks Tom, I always thought it was a strange colour combo but it grew on me. I think the car was white originally.
Your build is looking good. Thank you for showing this kit. I need to get about a dozen to build all the different versions. Sometimes the simple kits are the funnest to build.
This is a simple curbside kit so no fit issues and lots of options. Check out the hpiguys Workshop channel to see him build the custom box art version.
@@ModelCarMinion Sounds good!
Great work Steve!! Looks excellent!!
Thanks Oron, I'm getting a good collection of my the real cars I've owned, this is the fifth.
Nice, I've had 25 or 30 cars and don't think they've made a kit for any of them. Even the truck I have now, been #1 midsize truck for years, no kit. Lots of Chevy, Ford Even Nissan but no new Tacoma. Oh well.
Turned out really nice Steve.
Thanks Gary, it's a fairly simple kit so it went together well and I was able to finish quickly.
Nicely done.
Thanks Mars, I appreciate the comment.
Nice build. Definitely a strange kit with the way the tub, windows and body are held by 'washers' as well as the screw in bumpers. I never seen a 'wall mount' stand like that before. The completed car does remind me of a watermelon 🍉now that I see those colors together.
Thanks for planting that image in my head. 🙄
@@ModelCarMinion Someone was going to point that out so it may as well have been me. We will discuss the Charles Bronson movie "The Watermelon Man" when we meet. 🍉🍉🍉
@@dariosmodelbuilds Sounds good, I don't think I know that movie.
The lock washers provided for the security of the glass unit and interior shell is something you'd find in the old Jo-Han kits.
Great tribute to your first car! These screw bottom kits are a fun diversion from serious model building, so much you can do with them!
The do make for a quicker build and less handling for assembly.
Nice build buddy
Thanks Ard, I like to find kits that resemble cars I've owned.
Great build Steve. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Donnie, I appreciate the comment.
Nice looking Galaxie Steve.
Thanks Rick, brings back good memories of my first car.
Thank you for sharing; Are ALL the parts Primed first? or may you paint directly on the plastic? cheers.
I guess it depends on the type of paint you use, I use mostly water based craft acrylics so I usually prime everything first, it helps the paint adhere.
@@ModelCarMinion Thank you for your reply and insight. If we use Enamels, is it still better to Prime as well? or can we paint directly on the plastic? cheers.
@@southpaw5483 I don't use enamels but I've seen others use them without primer. It may be best to test it first on a plastic spoon or plate to make sure. Dooing a light sanding and washing the parts first may help with the adhesion.
I am just getting started on mine and it will be black and purple main color I just wish they had put better tires in it though having just a little trouble with the hood too and the interior
I don't remember having any problems with the kit, keep at it.
Oh wow, those fine points are exactly what we need. The trim painting you did looks great!
I'm finding the 0.7 mm fine point very handy.
