KLON Centaur vs. Clone - An in depth test
Переглядів 263Місяць тому
A while ago I built a KLON clone from a DIY kit. I built it for a friend and since I got the chance to compare it to an original KLON I went all in and ran all kinds of noises through it and collected measurements, to see, if there is any kind of magic or unobtainable voodoo in this pedal. I compressed the couple of hours of footage into these 29 minutes. Guitar is a 2011 custom shop Strat stra...

I like it. Is that pedal steel or lap steel? You have pedals on that thing?
Yes, pedals, regular SD-10 setup. Thanks for the comment!
Fantastic bro
Thanks!!
The test tone analysis graph is really nice. You could probably make them transparent and edit them on top of each other also so one could really see the difference is minimal/non existent and buying a real klon is just... No magic or Voodoo, Cool video have fun =D
Awesome, that it's useful information! If you're good with video, feel free to take screenshots and compare. To me they look and sound identical. Still the design of the Klon was quite ingenious and it's always easy to just copy the greats! Thanks for watching :-)
Deeeelightful.
There’s something magical about playing music for a sleeping animal, it’s the best! Great playing!
I have to say these boys were a bit ahead of their time. Being that just now in the last couple years folks are hell-bent on tube amps
Wish I could find these on reverb. I mean for a 12-year-old pedal/amp you'd think maybe someone would be selling one used for under $500. Although I have no idea how many were produced I doubt they were very many
Wooow!
I bought this pedal when it first came out, and it is still my primary compressor… Wish you had talked about the two internal knobs as well…😊.
Congratulations, the big class.Great atmosphère and great sound. what are the référence of the transistors you ave installed. In advance thank. good weekend. Didier
Thanks! For Q1 and Q2 I used AC125s (according to schematic should be hFE 60-80) Unfortunately don't remember the exact values... Q3 is also AC125 (hFE 110-130) - hope this helps. Best
Nice job. FYI the part at 34 seconds, Paul play by lowering string 4 a half step and he goes up 1 fret to fret 8 (over the A chord). I only mention that because I know I like to learn solos as close as possible to how it was originally played
Great tip, thanks. Will try it out!
@@jazzabilly you got the same notes, just wanted to let you know how Paul taught it.
Is good for home using, or is it too loud for that ?
Definitely good for home or small gigs.
Great Playing and good demo🔥
your pedal sounds so good I just bought the kit and am going to do the build!
Can't go wrong with that one!
sounds great!
Absolutely incredible. Just learned a very jazzy version on guitar and was curious if any one had done it unaccompanied on a steel. You killed it
Thank you, much appreciated!
Great lighting by Luc Lafortune!
Wow!
Nice playing. Pedals sound identical to my ears. But if I had to pick, The Zendrive offered a bit more tonal clarity than the rest.
Do you have a newer version of your progress?
Actually had put this one away for a while. Should work on it again... masterpiece!
Masterpiece? Not so sure about that but it is a classic Modern PSG solo. There are 50 versions online. After watching yours I was curious if you had a newer take with different playing positions.
so sweet play.. keke
Jesus Christ fucking zeppelin again for the 498,564,399,108 time play something else like maybe black sabbath which was waaaaaaaaaaaaay better music than zeppelin hands down tony was a much better guitar player so there I said it!!
Very informative!
Cool riff
I love this
👏👏👏😍💯
great job i wished you had throw up more info on what levers and the pedal combos maybe live eith the track in writing like how you have a+b pedal and 3 knee levers still helpful watching you play sounds great i just got my 73 D-10 marlen thats a pull release in the shop for adjustments and somee greatly needed knowledge from a man who worked over a decade building emmons pedal steels only charged me 35$ to set me up i watched a paul franklin video amd it made me want to get some new strings i wasnt aware that on this steel i have to use the exact same strinvs every time i want to restring it ive been meaning to ask if it was exact everything or just making sure there the same gauges my c pedal and from there my levers went to crap god i love pedal steel still a relative newbie but i play every string instrument you could think of ive been recovering from having drop foot and wrist on my left side crazy story should be dead shoudnt have been born and now im supposed to have turned out a vegtable basically ill admit i have pore spelling and grammer but that doesnt mean i havent read alot and love history alternative history but history non the less good day and thanks again for putting up this gem
Good)
Sounds great l. But so much of the hands , I felt that you might just come in with a slice of pizza next . Have fun

Sucesso Amigo.
Sucesso meu Amigo.
Love MXR but this pedal was highly disappointing running it direct. Can t believe I returned it. Sounds good here though.
Thx for your comment. By direct you mean d.i.? would always use the Dynacomp in front of an amp. I think this modded version and also the Script version from MXR sound really good. Best!
@@jazzabilly I was running it into a Strymon Iridium. I replaced it with and Exotic EP Booster and my tone was money. I have the MXR Dyna Comp mini on my other rig for my cleans and it’s unreal good. This jus came through flat direct badly. I moved it around to try to see what would happen but it was the same result. Was so surprised. Thx for the comment.
I own an EP Booster as well, that's a great one! Interesting observations with the MXR. Something like the Origin 1176 compressors might work better in your setup with the Iridium. But if the Booster does a great job, don't mess with it. Cheers!
Very cool angle! Thanks so much, I love this solo!
Thank you, yeah, Paul Franklin created a master piece with this one!
pretty neat
THX!
sick sound!
THX, ToneBender circuit, so good!
GREAT PERFORMANCE❗😍 PLZ MY ZEP COVER TOO👍😊🎸
I just bought this very pedal, and I have to say that I don’t notice a whole lot of difference with it on. Compression provides a little bit more sustain, but the pedal also adds noise unless you run it off of a 9 V battery.
Yeah, it's a slow compressor, subtle depending on how you set it. And it can get noisy if you crank it or use a noisy power supply, the Monte Allums mod quiets it down a bit.
Relax
FÄTT!!! Danke fürs mitmachen Olaf..#aktionlandunter
So umm, what are we supposed to be looking at here?
Can you make a video about the calling elvis riff?
Hey, Paul Franklin explains it perfectly here: ua-cam.com/video/sTo0iRDB4Rs/v-deo.html at about 19 mins in. Enjoy!
Awesome stuff
Thank you!
Ooooommmmmmmmm.......
Genius
Yeah man, Paul Franklin!!
Founf myself humming along, and finding some little lyric twiddles. Lovely stuff.
Yeah, maybe you'll write a tune, let me hear it :-) Thanks for checking it out Izzie!!
We’ll see. I’ve never done anything like that before. I’d have to record it for myself, and listen back to see if it was actually worth anything.
Oh wow, the Wah sweep doesn’t seem as big as the old 70s telrays. I’ve been looking for a video like this for a while, to see how these compare to my Wah.
Yeah man, the Morleys are very smooth, quite different from other wahs. Thank you for commenting!
@@jazzabilly Of course! Thanks for uploading! I bought an old 70s telray Wah, and wanted to see how it would compare to one of the slimline wahs from after the larger ones were discontinued.
Cool shred man! A Lot of satch :)
