BUILD. MORE. METRO. LINES.
Glasgow's subway system has not been expanded since 1896. In the 21st century, small and mid-sized cities are reluctant to build new grade-separated high-capacity urban passenger rail networks. We look into the history and political complexities surrounding urban rail systems and see what we can learn from it.

Bike Lanes are (Mostly) Useless.

Bike lanes, sharrows, cycle tracks, and shared use paths. City planners, urban designers, and civil engineers are constantly thinking about how to move people on bicycles. Unfortunately, cycling in many parts of many US cities is still very unsafe. In this video, we take a look at Oklahoma City and how its existing cycling infrastructure is missing the mark with regards to safety. AtSite Inc: f...

The Future of Transportation is… a bus?

In Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines have recently begun operating. However, according to the ITDP BRT standards, neither of these public transit services are technically BRT. Instead, these are simply high frequency, well-designed bus routes which are introducing more Oklahomans to the possibility of using public transit in their home cities. The Return of Passenger Trains
Переглядів 19 тис.9 місяців тому
Passenger trains are important in US history. For a century, train stations were the primary entrances to our cities. Over the past several decades, trains have become less prominent for a variety of reasons. However, the time has come for trains to make a comeback. The Federal Rail Administration has recently rolled out its Corridor ID grants, providing new investment into passenger rail. Amon...

Should Urban Freeways be Demolished?

San Francisco's Embarcadero Freeway was one of the most hated highways since it was first built in the city. It destroyed the city's historic waterfront, blocked the view of an urban landmark, the ferry building, and ultimately served as a loud, polluting nightmare for the city. Its construction was an environmental and urban design misstep. Ultimately, the freeway was removed as a result of pu...

I’ve lived in Oklahoma County all my life and worked in Bricktown in the early 90s. Bricktown was already booming when MAPPs started. Midtown is another area that took off without MAPPs help. Additionally, the streetcar has very low ridership because it doesn’t really go anywhere that makes it competitive in getting people to use it instead of driving themselves. The urban planning of the modern day is just as much top-down central planning of the 50s and 60s, they just haven’t had the same boom-to-bust economic cycle to expose them. Other than misattributing growth to MAPPs and conflating the streetcar with progress, your presentation of the history of OKC’s layout and development is very good.

Gatewood resident here! 👋 I have ridden Rapid a few times now and I’m a fan! I do wish it had dedicated lanes on Classen. The painted “bus” word on the pavement plus the signs aren’t very clear. The signs went up shortly after service started and they clarify that the eight lane is for the bus and right turns only… during peak hours. I’m not sure many drivers pay attention to those rules. But overall I’m very pleased with it. More BRT-ish lines in OKC, please!

Summer 1983 I needed to retake a "Library Administration" course on my University of Oklahoma Master of Library Science degree. I took Greyhound for 2 weeks on a 8 week course from Norman OK down to Texas Women's University in Denton TX. It seemed to take 4 - 5 hours one way with all the local stops so after 2 weeks, due to time constraints, I decided to just drive my car.

I am with you on the commuter rail. And with I-35 and I-40 being an impossible to solve nightmare, it needs to be done as those interstates will only get worse. They could add commuter rail service from downtown OKC to around Edmond North High School. Run that same line down to Norman. They could rive the line that runs to Midwest City. Take the east/west line that runs along I-40 and run service out to Yukon. Take the southwest running line and operate service out to Mustang and add a station over by the airport. Sell passes that let you ride the commuter rail, the street car (or whatever it is called) downtown, or the city buses. One pass and you ride any of those options all day long. Start giving people here some mobility freedom because the road network here is a lost cause.

I've taken that train to Ft Worth on a day trip. I had never traveled with Amtrak and wanted to see how they did. It is like an experience from the 1970's and that isn't a good thing. The cars are severely out of date. The track quality at times was fairly poor making the choice of using double decker cares on the route a bad one. The food quality was like microwaved gas station food at twice the price. And the station in OKC had absolutely nothing to offer. There was a complete lack of effort by Amtrak to make this a quality experience. They cannot even be bothered to offer seat selections. At a minimum they should double the length of the train and make it a single level, add a cafe car, add Wi-Fi, and run the route at least 2 or 3 times daily.

I really wanted to move into my nearby city. But as I've gotten more into urbanism and realizing how my small outskirts town can be improved for the benefit of the bigger city, I've realized those improvements can make the Small Town better for the people living in it. So now I'm looking for ways to improve its benefit.

With Brexit and money being very short nowadays, No-one can afford subways any more. Glasgow has a great suburban network but needs a couple of new tunnels to connect with each other, a LRT system would be very good in Greater Glasgow but where's the money? Also forget about the buses as they are always caught in jams and whilst most people want more cars, it will destroy Glasgow and the world, even with EVs. Yes only Indy will deliver these and not only will the e4xtension with the Underground become two horseshoes and a circle will be good, an East-West automated Metro will certainly help as well as LRT. Kuala Lumpur has this As for the US , unless it breaks it's car addiction, it's going to kill the country!

The Glasgow subway, nowadays, is very south and west focused. Absolutely no route through the east end and the same is true for the north of Glasgow. The feeling is that it is used mostly for the better off west end folk, and now the south side is getting gentrified, it’s the same for the people for those who are migrating to the south side. It’s not just a geographical issue, it’s a class issue as well.

I felt compelled to comment because 1) I've got family roots in Oklahoma, and 2) I've lived in San Francisco most of my adult life (and I am quite old). I'm also a practicing planner. Anyway, just wanted to say that this whole video is spot on -- actually kind of amazingly so given that as you say, you've never even been here. Very impressed. PS "Today nobody misses the Embarcadero Freeway" -- can confirm, 100% true statement.

I think a better comparison for OKC would be Vancouver, BC. They are similar sized cities, but Vancouver put in its first (fully automated + grade separated) subway/metro in 1985 and has continued to expand the system ever since. The full system gets a daily ridership of just shy of 500,000 riders per day.

In the last few years Glasgow has pedestrianised many city centre streets, introduced a low emission zone prohibiting certain vehicles, and introduced parking charges 7 days a week till 10pm. Ok, we get it, you don't want us to drive into town. So how many new stations or new public transport systems (or system extensions) of rail, light rail, monorail or tram has there been in the last 100 years? That'll be zero. Want to travel from the north of Scotland to the south? You'll have to change trains and stations in Glasgow and walk between them. Usually in the rain. Want to travel on the Glasgow subway, trains and buses? That'll be 3 fares and 3 tickets on separate systems. Apparently implementing one integrated system is too difficult. 21 years after TFL introduced the osyter card. Space age stuff. Want to travel to the city airport? You'll have to go by road, because twice over they've bottled out of building a simple light rail spur of about a mile in length. Meanwhile Edinburgh, with it's excellent and long highly regarded bus system, now has its second phase of their tram system nobody asked for. We aren't serious about this stuff.

The thing with the Glasgow 'subway' line is that its only one line in a much more extensive (largely underground) urban/suburban rail network, which itself was once even more extensive. The question isn't so much why the 'subway' was never expanded so much as why that one line has never been integrated with the other lines into a 'Glasgow metro'. It exists everywhere except on paper and at the ticket desk.
