This video is a review of the Dance Brothers revolver that was made in Texas back in 1862, for the Confederacy, during the Civil War. This Pietta reproduction of the unique Dance Brothers revolver has been converted to fire 45 Colt and 45 Schofield cartridges (Black Powder or Smokeless) with a Kirst Cartridge Konverter. Kirst Konverter is currently the only company offering a cartridge conversi...

    that's a howell Conversion, not a kirst. Kirst by your advertising: is a revolver that replaces percussion, but don't have a rod to take out the empty brass. Howell Conversion: A cylinder you have to dissemble, and add a new loaded cylinder.

    As a power tool repair technician, I disassemble and reassemble more complex mechanisms than this on a daily basis, but it's remarkable what a reputation for complexity and difficulty of reassembly single action revolver designs from more than a century and a half ago have developed. Double action are a bit more complex than this, with all the extra "just so" linkage that lets the trigger pull the hammer and advance the cylinder. Still, revolvers and semi-auto rifles and handguns aren't as complicated as, say, a sewing machine or camera shutter. Take pictures or video as you disassemble, and make sure the part you're working with is visible in the images, and you'll have the information you need to put everything back the way you found it.

    Once you do the conversion, can you swap out and still install and use the original cylinder?

      You can with a 1851 Navy Colt. It just makes capping easier with the modified recoil shield. It should work on a Dragoon or Walker.

    I remember saving up to buy my 1858 Piata that I bought for $100 a Kirst converter in 45 Colt with the gate. I did my research and decided that this company made a better product of the few companies out there doing this so after biting the bullet to say I spent the extravagant $500 for the cylinder which already was a huge purchase for me especially for what you get in return. Well unfortunately whoever this company had processing their transactions immediately stole my debit information and spent every penny I had which happened to be about $5,500. After fighting with I believe it was US Bank who I had a checking account with that the time for 9 months they refused to reimburse me for the stolen property despite the fact I lived in Seattle and the purchases were made in Florida. I threw that pistol and that cylinder in the drawer it's been 5 years and to this day every time I pick up that pistol I want to smash it into the ground

    I remember when I got my 45 Long Colt curse converter for my 1858 Piata. I was very excited did all my research And went with the Gated conversion kit from Kirst because in my opinion it was the better of the two options of companies selling conversion kits even though there was what I felt extravagant price attached to it for what it was. So after biting the bullet per se and spending the $500 on a cylinder for a $100 pistol whoever these guys had processing their credit cards immediately stole my debit information and spent every penny I had which happened to be about $5,500. The company refused to reimburse my money even though I lived in Seattle and the charges were made on the East Coast. It ruined my life and I never expected to pay $6,000 for something so insignificant I set the pistol in a drawer and haven't touched it since I got it years ago it just smells bad every time I pick it up

    Thanks for the video. I have taken a number of Colt type single actions apart but one thing I haven't done was to move the mainspring like you did. That's a neat trick thanks for the tip. And, yes, I too have put the trigger/bolt spring in wrong by not correctly getting it on the trigger properly (rats).

    Just curious if someone cal help me understand. I got a .44 caliber black powder Colt navy revolver. And was wondering if one of these konversion kits works on it or not. Does the kit need to also be .44 caliber? Or does the barrel length and diameter make no difference if I put on say a .38 special cylinder?

    • @arthicks2566
      @arthicks2566 11 місяців тому

      They work fine. The frame cutting for loading ammo into the cylinder is better left to the professional unless you have machinist skills (I don't). This gunsmith has done a couple of them for me. The .44 caliber black powder revolvers are actually .454 so .45 ammo works just fine. I prefer to use cast lead bullets in ALL of my BP conversions as well as model pistols. They are cheaper (I reload) and put less wear on the barrel. Don't worry about leading if they bullets are properly lubed. The presenter of this video has an Uberti .44 Colt Model 1860 that I bought the .45 ACP Konversion cylinder for.

    • @arthicks2566
      @arthicks2566 11 місяців тому

      If your revolver is a .36 caliber Navy type, the actual bore diameter is .375 so it is best to use hollow base wadcutter bullets. They will expand to "catch" the rifling in the barrel and improve accuracy. If you don't reload, there are companies that make Cowboy action ammo for this. Barrel length doesn't matter.

    • @KirstKonverterCustomerService
      @KirstKonverterCustomerService 9 місяців тому

      Yes, you will need the .44 cal Konverter Assembly. The .44cal barrel is too large for the .38sp cylinder. If you've got a .44cal then you cannot shoot .38sp. You will need a .36cal Colt Navy for that.

    Can the percussion cylinder be replaced and used in this conversion? If this conversion is done to a revolver which is cut for a shoulder stock and you have the shoulder stock along with a solely percussion revolver, are there any legal problems to contend with, such as "Constructive Possession", requiring the NFA tax stamp/registration of the converted revolver, just so they can be in proximity to each other?

      Yes, you can switch back and forth between conversion and percussion. You "MUST NOT" use a shoulder stock with a converted percussion revolver. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT DO THIS.

    • @gunslingerfromwish4656
      @gunslingerfromwish4656 8 днів тому

      When you put a conversion cylinder in a cap and ball it is considered building a firearm. So yes it would require a tax stamp if you would want to put a stock on it.

  • @lonewolfwildernesssurvival9443

    I followed the instructions something went wrong not sure what, now the cylinder free spins and won't lock, only reason I bought this model pistol is for the kirst converter no other company makes one for this model I now have a 700.00 paperweight I should have stuck with a model that Howells make conversions for like my other three, I guess that's what I get for buying something you have to sand and file to fit

    • @myfavoritemartian1
      @myfavoritemartian1 4 місяці тому

      Mine fails to rotate far enough to lock up. I need to either thumb cock it fast or rotate the last 1/8th inch by hand before shooting. Did the hand spring break on yours? A common thing if the spring is tightened too tight. Mine liked 1/2 way down with the screw. Mine too is a $800 paper weight.

    • @KirstKonverterCustomerService

      No. You can easily switch between cartridge and cap & ball by merely changing the percussion cylinder for the konverter and returning to the percussion.

Take income tax though won't be long now. I have a question do you know what size dovetail fits the piette front sight on newer models. The reason I'm asking (lot people probably won't like this) is that with 45 acp kirst konverter like have fiber optic front sight . Have one for 10/22 but dovetail is way bigger. I'm an idiot 😂 My loading gate was contacting the frame ever so slightly when closed. It was causing serious lock-up issues. I haven't messed with it because the timing is perfect for the percussion cylinder. Until I watched this video and it dawned on me to make sure the loading gate was clear when it was closed. Sure enough there was a tiny bit of contact with the frame, which was putting pressure on the conversion ring and cylinder. I filed it down and it's PERFECT now.

    Very interesting video. As a Texan and born Houstonian with family that fought for the Confederate States, I have had a Pietta 1851 Navy for 20 years that I have been wanting to either have converted or buy a new pietta and have it converted to go along side it. Thought about just getting a ready made Richard Mason from Cimarron...but that’s not half the fun. The Dance revolver is an interesting third choice as it shoots .45 Colt rather than .38 Long Colt.
