I'm really enjoying your playthrough videos and I'm really impressed how you're slowly but certainly conquering parts of Morgan's massive empire. A few videos ago I thought this would have been impossible. Well played! In my game I'm still in a tech race against the Gaians. (tech stagnation on) It's 2310 and she's now at 11000 tech a turn. I'm trying to get Clinical Immortality first (+50% diplomatic votes) because Deirdre already has Empath Guild and if she gets this Secret Project as well she will likely win the election for Supreme Leader.
Hehe thank you :). AI stuffed the bases with defenders again, I am surprised how tough they are. Btw I was looking at tech numbers and we are nowhere close to that tech level in this game, your Deirdre is nuts. I don't know how you win against that. Planet Busters and nuke her maybe - will help with population difference as well. I would use it as last resort, but it should do the job.
Hey man, I really enjoy watching all of your Alpha Centauri games. This game is an old favorite of mine and I'm so happy to see that new mods are still happening for it, even more so I love how in-depth you go with your tutorials, I've learned more about this game than I have known (and I played it when it came out back in the day 20 something years ago). You've inspired me to install it again and get the thinker mod and I'm currently also going through a campaign. Hey, can I make a suggestion for your next campaign? What do you think if you role-played as Lal and as an extra level of difficulty tried to prevent other factions from fighting each other/being eradicated and if they tried you'd get involved and keep the UN peace? Another one would also be a war in heaven kind of campaign where you are role-playing as one of the alien factions against the other alien faction splitting the humans among you. In any case, keep doing what you're doing, youre great, these playthroughs are amazing to watch 😁.
Hey, glad to see that you like it! That was my goal, to give us Alpha Centauri enjoyers this kind of content, gg game, a bit of roleplaying and imagination in great sci-fi environment. I like your ideas, I will think about it, both Lal and aliens are interesting - I think I could create something like that. Will try to change format a bit, to make it more interesting, a bit more story-like, fewer episodes but more editing, hopefully better quality overall. Thanks for support! :)
Love this game. Didn't know it was still played.
It was revived a bit, both Steam and GoG released Alpha Centauri (its only 3-5 $) and there are Alpha Centauri, Thinker and Will to Power discord communities, some active people there. Mods are great and are developed actively so it is refreshing and fun. If you have any extra time join for sure ; )
This start is crazy good. Is this a mod thing or just luck?
Well it is not that great - check capital, it has 2 nutrient resources but on arid land. Also not a single good green tile. US Unity Wreckage is awful to settle but you get these units and some energy at least. And we have those boreholes to north, thats great, but you need time to unlock yields, its just 0-2-2 now. Mount planet is to the west, but good land is under fungus and eastern side is always arid. Good land is on the other side of the mountain, a bit far. And AI will start to take land around. Mod doesn't improve map quality really - but it does make it a bit more pangea like. Thats cool. It actually nerfs jungle to have less tiles to make the map more balanced - jungle is op.
@@EdooGamingH 2 nutrient forests are enough to almost permanently settler spam, arid doesn't matter if you can just forest everything and still get to 7 pop in capitol. Boreholes will save you like 50 turns of terraforming later, but I agree they are not useful early. Unity wreckage is awesome, it's basically a massive early production spike between the scouting units and the free energy. But the most important thing is the information about AI spawns, it lets you plan out your early settling pattern. The last thing you want with Zack is sending 3 pods in the same direction to go for good tiles/landmarks only to realize 10 turns later that you forward settled Miriam. The reason I was asking whether it's a mod is because there seems to be a large number of yield bonuses that didn't come from pods, that looked strange somehow. Yes, jungle is stupid. If Yang settles it, it's going to be an 16 hour slog of a game even if you manage to win.
@@omgopet I mean you are right - its a good start, although I wouldn't say its great from what I can see. You can surely get significantly better starts, monoliths, jungles and what not. I did get two mineral resources closer that is great and I think a bit rare. Nutrient resources seem to be somewhat regular - not sure actually if mod improved on that but I doubt it. Regarding settling you are right, I had nice space - even though.. if you watch couple episodes in there is annoying pirate who likes to settle his bases in odd places so I couldnt grab all that land around.
Off topic question apologies in advance. Does the game let you know how long an AI is sanctioned from Commerce for, other than the initial easily missed message? Got an out of control Morgan in my game and my pact partner Cha' Dawn just screwed our income for x amount of turns by causing an atrocity but can't find out for how long...
I dont think so, I will try to find out and repost here. You should be able to reload autosaves and find out when sanctions started, game is autosaving every turn.
Should be 10 turns.. but dont know how can you see when it finishes unfortunately.

Morgan is putting on a lot of pressure but you're holding up very well, and even managed to take the battle to him. Very well played. I wish I could do that with Lady Deirdre in my game but she's on another continent. It will have to be a battle for tech superiority and currently she's in the lead.
It is tough when they are on another continent - Cruisers with adv. reactors can ferry lots of troops, but as you said - its a tech race. She should have very green units most likely. I had Deirdre somewhat strong in my Spartan game, worms can be trouble and her Needlejets as well.
@@EdooGamingH Yeah, I'm considering bribing her neighbors to go to war with Deirdre (they've all fought with her before) but even though it may distract her it may also give her even more bases. It's 2305 and Deirdre's tech income is 3600 per turn which is insane, she's beelining to the Secrets of... techs. She has the Seeker Algorithm so tech stealing is more difficult too. I'm beelining towards Digital Sentience to be the first to get Cybernetic.

Hey, yes its a shortcut, when you have selected a unit press 'a' and it will open the window. Its in menu Action -> Activate Now... but shortcut is convenient.

It's almost surreal seeing Morgan doing so well. I like how with Thinker AI any faction has the potential to become a monster. What I love is how Tinker AI adds new layers to this game because it makes use of features the vanilla AI never would. I always try to beeline towards Weather Paradigm early on just to prevent any of the other factions getting a terraforming early start.
I think if I stay passive he would run away with the game and win. Really good job by AI, who would have thought..
@@EdooGamingH Absolutely. Thinker makes use of almost any feature in the game and does it well. In my current game I play as the Consciousness and Lady Deirdre has been doing really well. I play with tech stagnation on and it's around 2290 and she has reached 3300 tech income per turn. Despite my efforts I can't reach higher than 2400 yet. I beelined desperately for Universal Translator so I could stay ahead (and finished the project 1 turn ahead of Deirdre) just a little in technology but now I'm unsure which way to go next. I need to figure out what Deirdre is researching/beelining for (my infiltration expired just at the wrong moment) So many decisions and I love it.

Popped in here after searching for the Thinker Mod, so I didn't watch your LP. I just wanted to comment that the sheer fact of seeing the AI competently handling Morgan makes me really keen to try this.
You should definitely try it, I would say AI is surprisingly good. It can have some troubles early on occasionaly (mostly due to support and minerals), but once it grows up a bit it is doing great job. Does really good job terraforming and from there on its strong. Recommending the mod ;) You can skim through some episodes and see how AI progresses.

@@frogmoth Hehe I know, believe it or not I do the same. Before sleep I watch some and is part of the reason I started these let's plays. I couldn't find the ones I liked for Alpha Centauri.. and decided to create something that people like me who like the game can actually watch. Because lots of other games like Civ 4,5,6 have really good let's plays.
possible error: it says Hive should use FM+Wealth to GA to Pop Boom, but then he can't pick planned, so CC+GA is only +4 Growth (great video otherwise though!)
True, I mixed up things here, Plex is right. You want this combo for Hive in general play to get lots of energy, but you cannot pop boom with it - have to pick Planned. Unfortunately, Hive is having it even harder to pop boom than I thought. Thx for pointing it out ; )

Unless you have the cloning vats, this is also a state you should not stay in usually. It is good to use it to grow for a few turns, but then when most of your bases reach their population limit (or food or happiness limit), switch back to a state that is better for energy production (and enjoy all the new workers who produce energy for you). You can do it in two main bursts. Once before hab complexes, and once after. Or just the once after, depending on the situation.
Agree & correct, should maybe have a slide for that. Ideally you pop boom once or twice per game to pop 7 and/or 14, all the bases at the same time. But it is easier said than done - takes some planning and setup to do it.
Do you know if brood pit fix (and others for that matter) will work for a 4.7 started Cha' Dawn game?
I would expect it, no reason why it would not, but will confirm if I get response from dev.
Got the response from dev: "It wont retroactively change the lifecycle for worms but it will apply immediately for any new units built on a base."
The airfield could be useful when you wage a naval+air war against a far away opponent. Bring a former aboard your transport and make it build an airfield on some throwaway island so you can provide air support to your fleet and troops away from home much earlier than the invention of a carrier deck. The reasoning of fighting on the opposite side of the Planet is left for the reader as an exercise.
Well good for invasion like that certainly. Some of these things are better on larger maps, but I cant force myself to play on large maps, i think i would never finish the game. Had same problem with civilization games.

Don't worry you can ignore it, I already installed and tried it and developer is working on a mod for years now. Operating system doesn't like that there is application when you download it so it warns you it could be a virus. Its a thinker.exe file that is a mod. Safe 100%.
@@EdooGamingH I assumed was a false positive. Nightmare to get working had to use old computer to download then extract file before putting on thumb drive and transferring to modern computer. Any other way and file wouldn't download or zip would be deleted. Working now at least.

Aaah thank you, mixing things up a bit, well hopefully we will replace these slow tractors with real formers.
I feel like the Cloudbase Academy is just too strong due to the satellite boom strategy (pop boom + sky farms). You already have the Space Elevator which lifts the restrictions of needing Aerospace Complexes for satellites, and it is fine because it is a much more late game secret project. My score usually skyrockets (no pun intended) right after I get the Cloudbase Academy, and it is not that difficult to get it first if you specifically aim for it and have a decent teching rate. And then on top of that it buffs your air force, which is one of your most important military assets.
Or you could argue that it is the N-squared effect of every satellite being able to supply every base that is too strong in the first place. It also scales badly with map size, since if you have more bases you can more quickly build more satellites, each of them supplying all of the bases.
I agree, both are pretty much broken, especially when comboed, picking up Cloudbase Academy and then spamming lots of satellites, its just too much. Unfortunately Thinker mod tries not to change balance much, keeping it close to vanilla so there are more broken things. Will To Power rebalances some of these, although Cloudbase Academy and satellites are same there. This is one of the reasons why I play blind research + keeping to default faction choice (Discover for Zakh) and roleplay a bit. Otherwise I could always gun for those best Secret Projects and then game does become too easy. I went here for Supercollider which is not that great compared to Cloudbase Academy.. but it will be fun : ).
The main problem about this game is that if you play regularly, usually nearing year 2600, an infinite amount of worms/locusts/islands start popping up every turn and you will be overwhelmed at a certain point, plus the fact that, again at the same time, the seas start rising at a 300 metres every 20 years even if you use the solar shield motion from the Council is absolutely ridiculous and unreal. That is the only thing breaking the game, but then again I suppose that without that, after you win, it would get boring anyway.
I am surprised that people play that long, I dont think I ever played much past late 2300 or 2400. Developers probably didnt consider this so its not designed probably. But I think modders could fix these problems, maybe even its not too hard. I will post something on discord to see what they say.

Much thanks for the explanation on psych and drone effect. Been puzzling over this near 20 years. There is an additional method of police pacification. Alien ogres are police units that don't add to a base drone supression cap. Finding one early is always a great bonus.

With the -4 research would it be better to allocate energy out of labs and put it in economy or psych?
I was considering this, but I think ultimately it is worth it to keep researching because every tech you get, you can likely trade for another tech to one of the AIs. So even you lose 40% of labs energy .. with single tech trade you are already in net positive. I decided to keep the tech up and still invest in science also because if I completely kill research I would be totally reliant on stealing and thats not a good place to be.. yet. Maybe a bit later in the game when we can easily still techs. Btw WTP made it even harder to trade AND steal techs.. larger chance of failure to stop this kind of allin tech tactics. I may reconsider later, we will see how it goes.
Unity crash site is only on the map in Alien Crossfire from what I remember
That is correct from what I remember as well. I know that I read that mods like this one enable extra landmarks to spawn (if the can fit on the map). There is landmark call Nessus Canyon for example that can be added to maps, but its never on the maps in base game or expansions. Then for example Uranium fields are often not on the map.. it may be that map generation could not fit them on the map or it rolls what to add on the map each time, so it leaves some landmarks out. Not sure actually..

Fundamentalist socialist like make some sense with her if you stretch your imagination.. strong belief, care for her people, focusing growth and manufacturing good while controlling things with government not to let people venture into "sinful" - by her defintion, category. In similar way I think you can image Miriam with using Free Market economy, it just may not be as free as we have it today. Rich game ; ). Hm about Democratic -1 Planet, I could actually ask dev about it to see his exact thought. It makes sense to me since Democratic promotes growth and freedom and that leads to overpopulation to some degree at least - like we have today, and people fight for their own rights - at expense of the planet. We do it today basically that way. So we have now green movements to counter it. Dev was also looking for a way to slightly nerf Democratic policy.. maybe there is more to it I am not sure. Thx for support!
I never played Alpha Centauri, but as a kid I DID play the mars scenario on Civ II Gold Edition.
I was looking at Civ2, never played it, but oh boy.. that seems now old and hard to play. Civ3 on the other hand has aged pretty well. Might maybe try that a bit, maybe worth some videos.
With what you've played so far, is WTP more fun than vanilla?
I think it is definitely more fun than vanilla, probably even more fun than Thinker mod. So I got further in the game Lal is having silk armor (5 def) and i have 5 str weapon.. and he seems to have airplanes already - i am in slight trouble actually. AI protects bases better - Thinker just made upgrade defenders improvement in v4.6 - hope that will help in pure Thinker mod.
Why are the units Very Green?
The mod author wants to make morale bonuses more valuable - this makes it harder to fight worms, to use SEs that give morale, harder to get elite units. It boosts military facilities importance as well - and he even changed that it is not guaranteed to level up from very green to green after one battle (as in vanilla game).
@@EdooGamingH OK does he remove factions/SE with negative morale as well?
@@Harquebuze No, the idea is that factions with lower morale have that morale for a reason as they have another advantages. So i think Gaians have -1 morale and start with Very Green.. so they have actually more trouble to get decent morale. But they do focus on worms which helps them there. Fundamentalist and Power are +2 Morale, Wealth is -3!

How do I install this thinker mod And where can I find this mod on the internet

@@LPYenlo87 Yeah copy and paste, you run the game with thinker.exe and in game you can press alt + t to see the version of thinker mod
So on topic of mine + road: if you have a rolling rainy tile or jungle rolling tile with mineral resource - thats a good place for farn + mine. Other then that probably avoid this combo.
just a word of advice ... pay some attention to your mic ... sometimes its difficult to hear what you say . Otherwise great series!
Ok will do, it actually takes practice :) to talk clearly and to keep distance from mic. I am guilty of playing tired though, I will try to record videos when I am fresh and energetic in the future. Not happy that I recorded some while a bit tired and got also sick a bit from a virus.
@@EdooGamingH yep, you can tell ... otherwise great insights and really enjoying the series. IMO, for more complex games you need commentary in order to explain better what is going on, what decisions are taken and why. Again, just my humble opinion. :) Cheers
