PC/104 Mini Retro Gaming PC

Advantech PC/104 PCM-5820, a mini form factor, fully integrated PC, originally intended for industrial applications, but I've repurposed it as a retro gaming pc. Powered by the Cyrix MediaGX processor. Also, what happens when I connect a very cool sound card, the Argus, a Gravis Ultrasound PnP reproduction, to it. It's been nearly a year since I posted a video, so I put some effort in to this o...

It didn't take me long before I decided to change things up with my DOS98 build. Out goes the Aztech Sound Galaxy Nova 16 Extra II and the HardMPU card, and in goes an Orpheus 1 sound card with built in HardMPU & a SoundBlaster AWE64. It was fun getting everything working together, and now I have a machine that can do basically everything but GUS.

Finally, it's done. In this video, I show the build, and go through a few of the last steps, such as installing multiple sound cards! I have to say, I had so much trouble trying to capture this PC with my capture gear, that I had to give up, as this video would never have gotten made, and resorted to recording the screen, same with the audio, for example the DreamBlaster output is too quiet & C...

In addition to being a console gamer, I've always been a PC gamer too, and through the years have had a few different builds. This video is looking at the sound and video cards I have in my collection. Sound cards Sound Blaster Vibra 16S - A Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 card, with discreet Yamaha OPL3 chip, for that authentic FM synth sound. This card is in use in my DOS/Win98 build. Sound Bl...

Hello, I had the American one years ago, I bought the Japanese one, I remember that I pressed a b c d and with the select they gave me more lives, does it come out like that for you too?
For those who want to go with Win9X on these there is a cheap trick you can pull if you don't want to bother with isa/pci and the board (most likely) does not have sound card. Just get some noname USB soundcard as surprising this is many of these are recognized by Win98. So from this point you will only have one issue these come with the wmd garbage not the VxD driver what most dos games like, so you put DOSbox on top of the Win98 and problem solved btw I wouldn't really bother with anything lower than at least p1s but these 500mhz geodes are just perfect, you need to slow them down turn off the cache and they are back to being 386s.
You are rich
No, just got these games when they came out, or before they got expensive. That's it.
@@RockstarRunner7 Wow. How much were they?
I now have Gunlord. Fast striker is next.
Very nice collection!
Thanks. Just checked out your channel, great production, and of course excellent subject matter 😆
@@RockstarRunner7 Thanks! 😆
I’ll be getting this soon 👍 Can’t wait !
I really enjoy it, good pick up. Have fun.
Thank you. I’m really enjoying building my AES collection. Last haul was Magician Lord. Gunlord and Last Resort. I’m hooked lol
@@Cyrus_Shokan ASO 2 and Magician Lord were the first Neo games I ever played, on an MVS, when I was young.
AES(X) NGH(neogeo home) (O) And this 43 title(NGH-043)
Would love to build one of these myself
You can find all sorts of these little industrial boards on eBay, lots of possibilities. I recently did another build using one that had a pci slot, and I stuck a voodoo 1 in it.
Fantastic collection! Can you advise good places to look for games. ? I’d be very grateful, I could not afford an AES as a kid. Now I finally have one and want to start my collection. I feel very passionate about it ❤
Considering the prices of the desirable games, I'd recommend looking at Terraonion's NeoSD flash cart. Other than that, the market forum on neo-geo.com forums used to be great, back in the day, but not been on there in a while myself.
Thank you !
Do you use a converter of some kind to play MVS in the AES or do you have a separate system to play them ?
It's a long video, so perhaps you missed it, but go to 31:18 and you'll see the converter I use.
Thank you !
Lovely collection! I liked the thumbs up on some of your favorites. Continue to enjoy them.
Great sellection mate. I know your channel since a very long time, looking for some info about NG DEV games. Finally I have completed the NG Dev team Aes full set, still waiting for the reprint, expected for the end of the year. Congratulations for such a great selection. Well deserved!
Hello, I have it in AES, I need to know how to put more credits in it, thanks. :)
oof no main instrument at 25:12
Ah, didn't notice that one slip through, I had an issue with an audio cable I was using.
needed to deep sniff that fat cart socket, love the smell of neo carts
PCM-5820 has build-in XpressAudio . why you need a external ISA sound card ?
Because I can, and it's fun. Nothing more than that 😁
Last Hope is part 1 of gunlord 🎮🕹😀👍🏾
I got gunlord which is a second print which is English is pretty nice remember I think I paid about 11 or 12 hunderd for it that actually from the third party video game makers that made this game gunlord🎮🕹😀👍🏾
Good thing I got a rapid fire controller🕹🎮😀👍🏾😂
i have a similar aztech like that but has a modem on it
It's a really decent card, and usually cheap too. It's in my 486 at the moment.
Gunlord is a awesome game i also have it for Neo Geo AES to 🎮🕹😀👍🏾
It’s always fun to help you with these builds!
Wow! Awesome little PC!!! That Gravis is VERY nice =D Hope you had a good Christmas!
Thanks! Yes, it's really neat, and I've been playing on it quite a bit recently, with a game that I didn't show in this video, but did leave a small clue about (future video?)
First striker background I find disorientating and very repetitive that or my eyes are buggered
Or my old video was badly filmed ;) I can see how it could be an issue with the constant 'looping' motion, but at least for me I just I'm fully focused on the enemies and not getting blown up all the time.
Pretty awesome build. I have the same board. only thing i hate is how small the heatsink area is and close to the ram slots. Anyway a vid on how you got the scaler running that sounds awesome i would like to do the same
Thanks for the kind words, yeah, it's still my go to retro pc. The scaler i'm using to convert VGA to Scart is an GBS-8100, but I expect there are better options. I do like that it has VGA pass through though.
So how exactly did you install your region switch?
I just followed this guide gamesx.com/importmod/neocdzcon.htm
Excellent Build. Thanks for the Video. Great System
Thanks :) Still use it regularly. Currently playing through Tomb Raider 3
love your work on the PS/2 and AWE64 memory mods! great video. What are the issues you see with the Orpheus, is it the crystal chip? I want to use my Orpheus in a similar kind of K6-2+ build but dont want any nasty surprises. I've been using the Orpheus in a 133mhz 486 build and didn't find much wrong with it (it was a dos 6.22 build, so no windows 95/98 experience with it yet). Previously i used an AWE64 and YMF744 (pci) in tandem but the AWE64 is just too buzzy/hissy/noisy. Giving up SB16 compatibility is tough but a cleaner signal is a good compromise. On top of that, the stutter free MPU401 in the orpheus is a blessing, and digital output is something I want to play around with. cheers.
The issue was I was having some conflicts that I eventually got cleared up, and I installed it in my video about using 3 sound cards. Thanks for the kind words, sorry the reply is late, I never get notifications when anyone comments :/
I wanted one of these mainly to play Splatterhouse. Then I saw Splatterhouse arcade is on a Namco collection for the Switch. Problem solved and 1,000$ and a thousand headaches saved. That being said it's a very cool system.
Does the Unibios chip work for any of the Ngdevteam games particularly Gunlord?
Nice video. Can this game Gunlord work with any of the unibios chips particularly the updated Unibios 4.0 An infinite health code would be nice if it's possible.👍😎👌
was there any unibios codes?
@@acem7749😩Absolutely none that I could locate or even get any new information about. I've literally been searching for years and asking everyone in the community and I've got nothing. It's just strange that the programmers thought it was a good idea to ensure that game would completely bypass the unibios chip rendering it totally useless in conjunction with this game. Why would they care so much whether someone used codes or not to play their game as long as you bought it from them??? Maybe it's for the same reason Nintendo of America tried to sue Galoob toys over their Game Genie creation. Nintendo clearly did not want consumers having the upper hand over some of their highly tedious games they had on the market during the late 80s early 90s era and I'm glad Nintendo lost the lawsuit too. Having a Neo Geo arcade system at home with a game like Gunlord totally defeats the purpose if you don't have access to unlimited quarters to finish the game that's designed to take as many quarters as it can from you in the first place. So people are supposed to spend thousands of dollars for arcade games and not be able to get the best of them the way that they are supposed to it's ridiculous and in some ways theft if you ask me!!!!!😳🤷
Great video👍😎👌 If anyone has any invincibility or infinite health cheats for Gunlord please share. Really I need the Dip Switch codes this will allow me to take my time fully explore and really enjoy the game.
Thanks, this is one of my early videos, and it shows, but I'll still take the compliment 😁 as far as I know, there is only a level skip cheat, which I don't recall right now, but you can surely find it with a bit of googling.
@@RockstarRunner7 Thanks for the advice I definitely found the level skip cheat fast. I'm just surprised you only have 3 health cubes before death and then when you die in a boss fight you have to start from scratch which sucks. Hopefully I'll find something soon if you do before me don't hesitate to share.👍😎👌
Really good looking game. Need to get this. Thanks for the vid.
Thanks for watching
Excellent stuff mate. I think I'll try to buy an old Win 98 PC and then just swap out bits and pieces. Found the sound card bits particularly interest; there's so much choice it's overwhelming. Some classic game choices there too; what a game Descent was.
I guess it's a good idea to think what games you want to play, and get an appropriately fast/slow system.
Small update regarding my Mixer setup: I got hold of a 5 channel mixer, and now have each sound device directly connected to that, so it makes it much easier to balance out all the audio, so the AWE isn't too quiet anymore, and also lets me selectively mute my external midi devices, so they don't play over each other.
What kind of display are you using?
It's a B&O MX4000, really good CRT, I was just having a hard time getting my camera to cooperate that day.
That's a great setup you've created for yourself there. I like the startup menu, makes things so easy! You can clearly see you spent some time and thought doing it.
Thanks, appreciate that. I'm really happy with it, and not left thinking anything is missing. The menu is useful, there are always one or two things that need the memory 'just so', but I can use the first option for the majority.
I would have gone for a different GFX card solution, but that is only because I want better compatibility. What I would choose, gives 100 percent Dos 2D compatibility, except real CGA, but that requires a real CGA card anyway. That choice would be a CL5446 card. I would avoid S3 Trio64 v+ and S3 virge 325, unless I only had that, because they do not support Vesa out of the box. You need Univbe driver in Dos. As for 3D gaming in Win98, then I would choose V2-SLI. Sure it is not at fast as V3-3500, however in real life that is just numbers ans you will not notice anything, when you keep to 800x600 or even 1024x768. Trust me. Been there, done that. For sound, I am not a fan of AWE cards at all. And if the motherboard have SB-link or PC/Pci, then I would go for an YMF-724. That would give perfect adlib in Dos and Wavetable games can all be played in Win98 anyway. But again. This is what I would do. It is the sweetspot that I found to be the best for Dos and early Win98 games. After roaming Vogons since 2014.
Great video can I please ask where you got the desktop wallpaper from
Thanks. I got the wallpaper I'm using from album artwork of one of my favourite synthwave artists, Waveshaper, and that piece is done by Artem Solop.
Gabe Newell is Watching.
That case is pretty impressive, looks like you have ticked all the boxes with this build. Having said that, how come you didn't go for a classic beige case for your build? I really like the Voodoo cards! I have a Voodoo 1 in my Windows 95 build and Voodoo 2 in my Windows 98 Se machine. I'd like a Voodoo 3 a some point too. It's interesting you went with two sound cards! I never thought about that in my build. Although for DOS games I try and use MT-32 using SoftMPU combined with my AWE64.
Where's the fun in a beige case? 😉 Like I say at some point in the video, I wanted to have a case that was compact, gave easy access to the cards, and let me see the guts at work. Plus, it looks cool as anything lit up. Nice that you have an MT-32! I'm getting by without one, but I expect I'll pick up Serdaco's upcoming Pi solution.
This game is not easy. Good game!
Nice looking game, but think Metal Slug still the pinnacle for these games.
Hey mate, found you through "onaretrotip" glad I did, and the nostalgia was strong watching this. Nice to see a fellow tuber who has a passion for 90's PCs 👍(not that I cover that on my channel, maybe I should 🤔)
Pete's a great bloke, met him first a few years back at a Play Expo. Yeah, I've always had a passion for 90's pc stuff, and I'm nearly ready with my 98 build to finally show it, so that won't be too long now 🤞I haven't done much of that on my channel, but I really want to, just as always though, it's finding the time.
@@RockstarRunner7 looking forward to it mate 👍
Hahaha krautland.tribvtwa from GERMANY. I wish i HAD a fraction of ur libary of games man shiiiiiit never HAD a neo geo.....
Danke! I grew up dreaming about having a Neo Geo, and finally got my own back in 2003 (if I remember correctly), game prices weren't too crazy back then.
60 months? JUST LIKE cuphead DLC. But anyway TRIBUTES feom GERMANY
It's basically fire and forget with these orders, then you get nice surprise when they actually turn up. Hell, Paprium for the MegaDrive turned up a few months ago :)
Still waiting for my copy
Have you gotten it? I'm waiting for mine too (pre-ordered in 2016).
Use slides when shooting ! It’s very efficient when there is a lot of ennemies on the screen 😊
THIS GAME ROCKS
The only thing I must disagree is MI 2. The music is horrible. But that´s maybe only me. After years I played it again but now that ScummVm can emulate the music the right way I don´t enjoy it as much as I did in the beginning. The least best of the LA adventure games that were ported to the FM-Towns. It has nice additional sound effects but the music... I prefer Midi, Soundblaster and Adlib. Also with Indy 4 I prefer the pc cd version. Not like the other ported versions. For example the best MI 1 theme music is the FM-Towns version! That Splatterhouse has some nice sounds!
I don´t remember exactly but Alone in the Dark wasn´t expensive. The LucasArts ones are on a whole other level. Hard to find and expensive!
Looks amazing, thanks for sharing bro 👍
