Generational Challenges are Actually Leadership Challenges
Many quickly blame generational differences & subsequent challenges on the individuals of a generation other than theirs, when in fact, it's really a leadership challenge. A leadership challenge that is occurring because of the person pointing the finger not recognizing they are also part of the problem & most importantly a part of the solution. Generational challenges have been around forever & will continue to be around long after we are all gone. True leadership is not about blaming others younger than them for their inadequacies or differences, but instead doing what they can to find a common ground to ensure those newer individuals are as prepared as can be for the challenges they will be facing. If it means we have to provide additional training, education & mentoring, that's what we need to do. Complaining about a certain age group doesn't do anyone any good. If you're complaining about them, I bet they're complaining about you....

Thoughts from Teaching at the National Fire Academy Last Week

Last I week I was fortunate to be one of two instructors (facilitators) at the National Fire Academy (NFA) Emmitsburg, Maryland, for the Training Program Management class. If you've been to the NFA, you know what an experience it is to get to go. If you've never been to the NFA, you're missing out on a lot of history, a lot of different classes to attend, a lot of great people from around the w...

Knowing When You've Exceeded Your Shelf Life

All of us have a shelf life; whether it is how long we live, how long we are in a volunteer or paid position, or just how long we are in a relationship. The last thing anyone of us should be is that person that "stayed too long at the party." We all know someone like that. In this segment, I discuss a few things that helped me decide it was time to retire from the fire department after serving ...
I Didn't Get The Promotion Or The Job - How Could It Be!

This episode is some ramblings about what to do if you don't get the job, the promotion, the position, etc. It's not all about you (or me) as much as...

Second, can you shoot me an email with a little more background on what part of the country you're from, type of department you're in, etc? That can help me better answer your question. I left riding a fire truck in January 2019 after 37+ years as a vollie; the last 15 in the largest, and one of the busiest departments in the country. Parts of it I miss, but not a single thank you for your time. So yes, that told me I had exceeded my shelf life. Now I am continuing my FMO career; I’m aiming for at least 10 more years in this line of the fire service (I’ve already have 10 years in the FMO business). Keep putting out the great videos. Why does it take courage to be a great leader in today’s world, especially the fire service? The biggest reason you need courage is the fire service is full of traditions, some good and some not so good. Some of these traditions is what makes us great. Creating a new culture aka tradition takes steadfast courage.

  • @jamesklein7997

    Hey Steve thanks for the content. I'm having a hard time with what you're saying about "don't wait too long" What is the message here? I am 21 years into a FD that I absolutely love. When is the point when its too late, it sounds a little discriminatory. Are you saying "Sorry, you're just too old..." Are promotions to LT just for the young? What is that magic age? I hope that's not a factor they use during the "rating" process...

    • @steve.prziborowski
      @steve.prziborowski 2 роки тому

      Hey James, you're welcome, thanks for the feedback and for your time watching them! Here's the easy answer - there is no one-size-fits-all answer and nothing in life is absolute except for death & taxes. Good for you for being 21 years into a FD that you absolutely love - not all can say that. It's never too late; my point for most is that don't wait too long to start preparing to meet the minimum qualifications to apply or to prepare yourself for the position because there is no guarantee you pass the test the first time and some departments only have tests every couple or more years. Meaning if you wait until your last 5 years on the job to try and promote to whatever, there is a chance you could fail the first two attempts or the requirements to apply have drastically changed and now you're scrambling to say get a four year degree done when you're in your 40s or 50s with family and life obligations. There is no magic age and I would be honestly blown away if it ever was a factor - either too young or too old as there is no such thing as too young or too old as I've seen candidates of both do well or not so well on their processes and/or positions once promoted.

      It went extremely well. So much so that I had that gut feeling that I got it and I didn't. I'll bounce back though. Tips for you: Stay confident, remember that this is more give and take than the orals, smile, they don't know your story so it's your job to concisely tell about (get to the meat and potatoes), don't give a bland canned answer for why you want to work for that department because they'll see right through it and mentally put on toward the bottom of the stack, really give a good reason for what you could bring to the community through the fd. And because you commented I can assume you watched this awesome video, so watch it again, and execute your story tomorrow. Good luck.

      @@nathannichols1838 seems like a safety issue. They're overemphasizing what I assume is the danger of losing control of the halyard and having the top section drop into the path of the firefighter... At a cost of setting up a ladder in one position, then moving it laterally via rotation, which causes any number of additional hazards.
