Ep 6.7 - Broker Independence - So what?
We were not asked to build Policy Change connectivity from anyone associated with Guidewire or any of their proxies. We are currently implementing Policy Change with Cognition+ and SEH systems. I am the founder of Power Broker. Good guest.
Great episode and some hard hitting questions. Felt like Steve really pushed hard, almost hijacked the interview.
I am interested in seeing which of the 3 of you sells first.
Great discussion guys. I've owned a brokerage where we concentrated our P/L with 1 carrier for a few years - did it for 2 reasons - it was financially beneficial and allowed us to make important investments in the brokerage, and we were much better able to service our customers. I still considered us to be independent as we made our own decisions and were able to service the customer well with advice that had nothing to do with only having 1 carrier. If the customer didn't fit the product we had available, we'd tell them they'd be better served by another brokerage who had what they needed. I've also had a carrier as a partner for a period of time. Again I considered my brokerage to be independent as the carrier was only interested in financial performance - they had nothing to say about placement of business. But , as an owner, it's not fun trying to negotiate annual compensation as the carrier's wants are very much different than an individuals needs.
Great episode ! Have always looked up to Carol. Happy Retirement ❤
The Algo brought an UW to your channel. CHEERS!
predictable !
Excellent interview. More should check this out. From the days of GK, GKB, HKMB, etc., Greg has always had my most considerable respect. A stunning history of profitable growth based on bringing together the right team and laser focused marketing.
We joined in early 2022 and have been thrilled with the experience. I can honestly say the post close environment is better than I could have imagined.
That is great to hear. Thanks for sharing !
Nice interview guys and good information presented. With so much IT integration having taken place in brokerages over the last 3 years in particular, the thought of changing BMSs is pretty daunting in this climate. Like Steve suggested, I think taking 18 months to transition is probably the least disruptive route.
Great Comments, Chris. A BMS upgrade is the single most disruptive thing in an insurance brokerage. If your doing it to move your current process to the new BMS system, you have missed the concept of improving and levelling up your brokerage. You have to reengineer and redesign the workflows and procedures. The new workflows need to be able to put your insights into a data lake in a meaningful way to glean insights on your brokerage. 18 months is a realistic time frame as you spend 6 months reviewing the options. Then a good 12 months to implement. You can do it faster, but at the peril of the project not going as well as you wanted - Jeff Digital Insurance pint.
interesting question at the end. Are brokers stakeholders or partners with insurers? If the insurers' have a direct writing arm, is cost effective for them to keep brokers as partners for portal business?
Brokers tend to have a better loss ratio than the direct channel, so it is to the carrier's advantage to maintain their relationship with good brokers
Excellent points! It's a scary new day!
thanks
