Why I Switched: Fujifilm X100VI & Leica D-Lux 8 (Part II)

Welcome to my first UA-cam video on this channel! I sold all my Canon gear and switched to FujiFilm and added Leica D-Lux 8 to my equipment! This is an update to a previous YT video (of a channel I will no longer use). Timestamps : 00:12 (introduction, new channel and why) 04:54 (fujifilm x100vi, leica dlux8, leica q3, gordon laing) 18:36 (outlook to leica q3 43mm) Stay tuned for more! FujiFilm...
👍thanks, so I'll be on my way.
What is your take on the Fuji X100V compared to the VI as well as the D-Lux 7 vs 8?
Happy Sunday! I am an android user but I have to research this product for my wife that has IPhone. Another great one David and Yasmeena!! Be safe and be well.
Thanks so much! 😀🙌🏽 I am sure she will love it.
Thank you David. Be well.
Thank you 😊
I watched Chris's review and I agree with him. I am not sure why you think he was being disrespectful. I do not remember anything being negative except that it's higher priced than comparable cameras (I am not sure all the cameras you listed have the same general feature set). That's not news for Leica. He did gloss over the handheld hi-res mode which sounds interesting if it works well. I would have liked to seen more detail there (pun intended). It probably would have been worth mentioning the pixel shift mode is done in camera. A convenient feature. I have an SL-2S and it is great. I use it a little more than the A7RIII. As for where a camera is made, I do not think anyone has a monopoly on quality control and is not worth mentioning anymore. My A7RIII was made in Thailand and I have had no issues at all.
I went into great detail in my video.
A7CR+40/2.5 is smaller combo than Q3 43... and in black with brand blackened, in leather everready case, it's pretty solid travel camera. Still not as small as X100VI, I admit (have it too). But the 40 from Sony is on par (or better) than the lens on Q3 (Leica has more "enforced" processing, comparing without it).
If you think so, I totally disagree. I used SONY A7 cameras for quite some time and I never really liked them. I switched to Canon before I totally slimmed down.
Ahoj Davide, beware of the background music in your videos, the mics make its soundwaves mingle with your voice and the volume is floating...
Petapixel is entertainment. To take their reviews seriously says more about the viewers than anything else. I made the mistake of actually taking their reviews and opinions seriously.....was a big mistake.
I shoot SL2 and SL2s and Nikon z9. All flagships and priced accordingly. No complaints they are different tools for different jobs. No need to upgrade the sl2’s though they work as good as the day i purchased them. They do the job.
You need to compare those heavy-hitters like A1 & R5 with the SL3. The current SL3-3 is comparable to R6ii, Z6iii, and A74 that are much far affordable, $2,000-$2,500. You research is far-fetched.
In some ways but it’s a step above. You need to use one to understand.
@ I agree, SL3-s is just a better camera than R6/A74, but the gap compared to A1/R5 is noticeably bigger.
Tell those who do that, I just took Petapixel's "arguments" apart. And, learn listening, reading, and understanding. Of course, I DID compare it to A1 and I wanted to show the anti-Leica bias by applying their standards on other cameras which were never criticized that much. If you don't like it, leave and moderate your tone!
People that are hating on this camera comparing it to the Lumix S5iix. They don’t compare the S5iix is a digital disposable camera like all budget cameras.
😀
The exact same things that people are saying SL3-S was said about the SL2-S. Now people have come to love the SL2-S.
It's B/C the SL2-S is less than $3,000 for a new body. The predecessor doesn't break the bank now.
@johnmoon822 If you can't afford it, accept it and don't whine 😜
@ I know it’s because of the price. My point was the people bitching about it’s flaws then end up buying the camera.
@@DAVCOHPHOGRAPH No one’s whining. Just read it again 🤦
@@Old-School-Liberal Agree. Also, a lot of people don’t find the latest SL3-S as a huge upgrade, so there’s no urgency to pay the $$$. Eventually, they’ll plunge and the get latest you.
Petapixel has always felt like whiney garbage and spammy junk to me.
It’s definitely driven by advertising
Petapixel is the tabloid junk newspaper my grandmother read years ago....only on youtube for photography.
@@Reportageandart I don't mind that but this particular review was totally anti-Leica bias right from the beginning.
I agree with everything you say here. But you have to remember when you say that it is completely build in Europe, that much of the inside, like electronic boards and AF motors etc, are made in China- by workers that do not have the same high living conditions as a German worker. Do we even know if the software/firmware development is made in Germany? Again, I love that Leica is from the EU, and mostly build here. We should support this if we can afford it.
I cannot and will not go into such details as no other company in this segment is designed and assembled in Germany and therefore in Europe. Of course, everybody has to use certain components that are made elsewhere but the main work is done in Germany and by people, not machines.
David i fully agree with your facts im also a leica user as im using the M11 monochrome and the d-lux8 ( but also Fuji xt-5 and richo grIII) , as you mentioned and compared the mega pixels this SL3-s can shoot also multi frame pic hand held so when you realy need the amount of mega pixel its there in the sl3-s . again great content and based on Facts > keep up the good work David and much appriceated .
Thank you very much 😀
I have always found it strange how people complain about things and make comments that, in their minds, are 'facts'. "The camera is too heavy", is an example. Too heavy for who, or what? I like heavy cameras and where possible, all my cameras have the additional battery grips because I like the extra comfort and perceived stability it gives me. As well as the extra battery life of course. This is the same when it comes to cost. "The Leica is too expensive". Again I say, for who? Just because YOU cannot afford it does not make it too expensive. To a man who eats in McDonalds, a complete meal in one of the finest restaurants in the world is "too expensive". But when you look at the work and costs that go into running a high-class restaurant, and the quality of the ingredients of the meal, it is not over-priced. I am sure many hundreds, or even thousands, of people will find the Fuji X100VI or Nikon ZF "Too expensive", but the same condition applies. So, with Leica, the 'ingredients' of producing one make it worthy of its price and long may it remain that way. Thanks as always for your video, David.
Thank YOU so much! I could not agree more. 😀🙌🏽
I’m with you 100%.
The proper comparison is with Lumix S5iiX, and the soon to be updated S1. Both will compare more closely, they share L Mount and share tech. And Lumix are much less expensive. As mentioned in my last comment, I am not a hater. I ordered the SL3S and waiting for it to arrive. I did borrowed one from Leica and tested it. Love it.
I referred to the ubiquitous "comparisons", in particular PetaPixel's latest. I just took their "arguments" apart. 😀
I like the naturalism of your videos.
Thank you very much 😀
Nice job!
Thank you very much 😀
Another great rant! 😂 Agree! People just don't account for Leica quality and being handmade. Many because they have never used or held one. Very well said and love the live type recording. Finding many YT'rs are just looking for clicks, likes and subscribes, not wanting to provide the truth. Love your truth. Also finding many will add an array of updates/custom add-ons, but then complain when the camera does not come perfect from Leica because it costs so much. Always entertaining. Thank you.
Thank you very much - you say it! 😀
Hello again David. When it comes to Leica you have to factor in the sheer beauty of their industrial design before you even start. The SL 2 and 3 series have evolved and imho are stunning in that regard. Form AND function. Likewise the Q series. I am fortunate enough to own a Q original (with thumb and hand grips) and for my “hobby” photography it’s all I need. Less really is more…✌️🇦🇺
I could not agree more and thanks a lot for your comment 😀🙌🏽
😂 I think the wifey definitely agrees to disagree with you!
😉
What’s the average wait time to have a Leica camera fixed?
Sorry, I have no idea.
Even though I probably don’t agree with you on anything political, I get a kick out of how you fit it into the camera discussion. I think the camera offers little value for money compared to Panasonic. But if I were going to get into that system I would take the pain of the extra price just for that fantastic body design. Design can win me over even if the camera doesn’t have the latest technology like the ZF. And I make it a conscious effort not to buy Chinese when possible. Don’t need to give money to a country that wants to see America collapse.
You would not believe I was happy the Dems lost. I BET this is a surprise to you 😉 Thank you for the comment 😀🙌🏽 I still believe we share more than we both thought in the beginning. 😀
@ well you did say you are a classic liberal and I can very much believe it. I highly respect classic liberals even if I couldn’t vote for them.
@@WhoIsSerafin You still see it from the American point of view which is why I added "classic liberal" (European). There are no liberals in the USA. Nevertheless, I supported and loved Ronald Reagan, in many ways George W. Bush and, even though I do not like him at all, Donald Trump in this campaign because the Dems have been subverted and zombified by wannabe "liberals" which in Europe would be the far-left. They are not liberal at all, wokism is not liberal, it is anti-Western.
@@WhoIsSerafin This here sums it up pretty well. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberalism
@@DAVCOHPHOGRAPHI’m surprised that someone as intelligent as you, David, could support a know liar, grifter, fraud, cheater, sexual abuser and racist.
Using a Q3 may be a pleasure. And that's enough to choose this one if you can afford it. However, an AF camera is boring for me. Point, shoot.... Meh. A "M" camera encourages slowness and stops "arms race". That's my choice for decades now, but I can understand that it's not the best way to shoot for everybody. Enjoy your Q3.
Thank you! I IMMEDIATELY switched to AF lenses when Nikon brought them. Back then, it was comfort, now a dire necessity because of my eyes. I cannot use Leica Ms because they do not offer IBIS.
They are good looking bodies that’s for sure. But the only manufacturer I think giving you fair price for pro bodies and pro lenses right now is OM Systems. But I truly hope all the manufacturers do fantastic so the camera industry continues to flourish.
I once had an Olympus, just when they released the E-M1 II and I was quite happy UNTIL a one-year old camera "collapsed" and Olympus quietly, without ANY hesitation or questions etc. - replaced all the electronic components. I lost any confidence I had, I am a full-time photographer, and so I sold it as basically new and returned to SONY A7sII. Nevertheless, as much as I agree in principle, I am still VERY happy to have that Leica which is, in all my life, the best camera I have had.
@ that camera is legendary to this day on how much people love it. And I know people who still use it for pro work in wedding photography. But it happens, I had to return my G9 three times before they gave me a new one. My X100v went in twice. But in 20 years never had an issue with Olympus/ OMS or Nikon.
@ I really loved it, reminded me of the analog Olympus I always loved bc they were somehow different. But I was feeling really unsafe and that is not good when you work with it. I am not against m4/3, quite to the contrary, see my Leica D-Lux8 (and 7 before).
Another quality video David. And Yasmeena of course credit to you. The next camera that I will purchase will be the Leica S series, Hopefully the SL3-S mainly because of the interchangeable lens system and 24 MP is more that I need. I am an amateur photographer (but serious about my efforts). Hand made makes it much more valuable that mass produced. Better image quality is in the eye of the beholder. By what YOU want, not what people that you don't know their true motive for recommending one camera or another tells you to or not to. Always insightful and deliberate. Bless you and Yasmeena.
Thanks so much Rodney and I totally get you on "amateur photographer (but serious about my efforts)". Before photography became my job this is how I described myself and that makes you a true "pro". Anything else, and I see this every day, is just that you make income with your photos, no matter how good/poor they may be. It is the mindset, the time and effort that makes you a pro and I see you are way more pro than many so-called "pro"s. I can't wait to hear more from you and the SL3-S and I hope you will get it soon. 😀🙌🏽 Yasmeena says hello and we both send you our best wishes and most cordial greetings 🙌🏽
Clowns 🤡 like PetaPixel
😀
Thank you. Make more videos. Im tired of bu%%sh#/!
Thank you, I will - every Sunday. 😀
I ordered an SL3S, but I think the appropriate comparison is with Panasonic…S5XII, which has all the features as the SL3S, at 1/3 the price. I decided for Leica because of the simple menu system, it is German hand made and it does everything that I need. Oh yes, I actually shoot watches professionally. So your jewellery story at the end rings to me.
True, and I could/should have mentioned that but that was not my point. It was how ppl IMMEDIATELY lash out against Leica plus the IMMEDIATE (negative) comparisons drawn by even reasonable platforms. I profoundly dislike Panasonic's menu and button layout as in Leica D-Lux7 and the changes in D-Lux8. I hope you will get your SL3-S soon and I am very curious to hear your feelings and experiences. 😀 I LOVE watches since they are, besides my wedding ring and my Star of David, the only kind of jewelry I wear. Do you have favorites?

The SL3-S is a great camera - the closest we can get today to EVF-M they won't make. High ISO was great on my SL2-S with the same base sensor, and gets PDAF for improved AF. The whole it is handmade argument is however irrelevant - the high end Japanese models are similarly piece built up by skilled technicians.
So, YOU find it irrelevant, many don't. PLUS, it is not an argument, it is a fact, and now?
👍👍 What a great breath of fresh air! No BS with BS! 😃 Call it as you see it and I agree. The camera experience needs to be a personal/emotional/physical one and only the user can define that. YT'rs take themselves to seriously and to dramatic. I'm still loving my Q3's everyday and did take many YT'rs opinions in mind, but real final sale for me was seeing workshop participants using it, seeing their photographs and then buying one and trying it for myself. I just sold my other dream camera, the Nikon Z9 as it was a beautiful camera and getting better with firmware updates, it was pushing me to be as you said, Jack of All, Master of none. Leica Q's and Nikon Zf is helping me find my happy place. Thank you. 🙏
😀
The full quote is: "A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one."
First, I know the quote, second, I don't care and third, why would I care? 🤣
ua-cam.com/video/Z3kxWrDw5sI/v-deo.html
Using SL2-S I am happy with most of its features. Not sport shooter, ocassional video. The new firmware made SL2S better in Af department, so for now, I am skipping this one. SL2S serves me plenty. Actually thinking of adding Dlux8 . Thanks for the video.
Thank you 😊
I am starting to really look forward to your videos. They are always interesting. I did wonder yesterday why there wasn't a new one but very glad to see it now. Thanks David.
Thank you, very much appreciated. We had some serious troubles with a late flight and troubles with our luggage. 😀🙌🏽
Standing by David and Yasmeena!! Over and out.
Thank you very much, I am already up!
Junge, Du hast das recht. It is a nice camera, from P&S to full auto pro and all in between. It has some nice tricks and its compromises are rational. And it is echt Bauhaus to see. The Swede who designed it was very good. All in all, a good easy to use, easy to carry and rewarding piece of hardware. In good health.
Thank you 😊
I agree with your camera choice but not with your editor rationale. But I edit little. I shoot more. ;o)
I edit very little because I take care of as much as possible while taking my photos.
I can see the joy on your face using your new Leica Q3. What an amazing camera. I truly understand your amazement and love of the system. Enjoy my friend . Has Yasmeena had a chance to use it yet??? 🤣🤣
Yes, true, I am amazed. Still amazed ... Yasmeena tried it immediately there and she also likes it a lot. 😀
I don’t like the political exposure of that star. Skip channel.
I don't like such life forms like you who accept hijabs and crosses but criticize stars of david. get lost 🤣
If they don’t sponsor you. Why spend an abundance of time for no reason talking about how you spent $7000 ?
First, none of your business, your pathetic attempt to be condescending tells everything about you 🤣 Second, I spent more because of the accessories 😜 Third, this is MY channel and if you don't like it, stay away but spare me your pathetic comments, presence and your obvious envy since you immediately talk about the price Fourth, I am surprised to read you are a boudoir photographer (???) because of your laughable manners and attitude. Poor models but I anyway don't see anything of your "work". Fifth, one more time such a comment here and you are blocked, is that clear, boy?
The Q43 looks very appealing, and I love some of the shots you got, David! But I had to skip through parts of the video because the audio was just so bad. It’s very hard to watch a video with bad audio. I recommend a DJI Mic 2 or Mic Mini with the receiver connected to the phone. It’ll make everything 500% better. 👍
Thank you very much. We were heading back to Germany and to stop there and visit Hangar 7 was spontaneous and therefore we had to make do with what we had at hands. We don't use DJI for political reasons, they support Putin's invasion. We recently bought the NEEWER Lavalier which does an awesome job.
@ Oh, I didn’t know that. Interesting. Thanks for the insight, David.

Sounds OK to me. As for DJI, well, I am not throwing away my X2D.
@@zoltankaparthy9095 I fully agree, while Hasselblad is only owned by DJI. This is still different.
Just to check if I understood you correctly: The camera wasn't signed by name of the person checking it before it gets sold? Just wondering because usually Leica does this with their lenses and M's.
I did/could not see anything like this.
Having bought a brand new M in one of the bigger German Leica stores, there was no such thing.
@@RegrinderAlert Ok. I just saw it on videos.

An amazing ‘monochromatic’ location that makes colours pop. I think Leica has nailed it with this lens/body Q3 43 by the looks, and I really like my Q1!
Thank you very much 😀
The Red Bull 'Hanger-7' looks amazing David. Thank you for sharing. I have taken some of my students as guests of McLaren on guided tours of their facility here in the UK and now I want to visit 'Hanger-7'. I have been to Salzburg in the past and have often wanted to return, now I have one more reason to make that trip soon.
Thank you very much 😀 We certainly return more often since you never see all their planes at once because they use them. Maybe we meet 🙌🏽
Hi David. I do understand why you would prefer the D-lux 8 over the Fuji at times because of the more flexible lens. I also have the Fuji X100VI along with a Nikon Zf (and many other cameras), and I am going to visit Stuttgart in a couple of months. I will be taking the X100VI because it is an amazing camera and I love the images, but I have just bought a 24-200 lens for the Nikon because I just KNOW I am going to want that same flexibility in a lens when I go into full 'Tourist' mode.
I totally understand 😀🙌🏽
