GMC 3500 DURAMAX 4 WHEEL DRIVE REPAIR
Today we do some more work on the GMC 3500 Duramax dually. When I was replacing the head gaskets on this truck, we had some rodents do some wire damage. Now the 4 wheel drive on the truck will not work. We get that fixed and find that a small leak ends up being a lot more than I thought.

Good morning Justin ☕️☕️
Hi Gary!
Where do you purchase the steel for a project like this
I went through speedy metals but you should be able to find a local metal supplier. It would be cheaper to do that than go through a hardware store.
Always love to see you working on this thing! Ok I’m gonna try and help ya out here: You’ve seen spark from the mag which is good, but it won’t jump the tester, which tells me your points probably need cleaned. I have had this exact problem, see spark on a plug but won’t fire. Sanding the points fixed the problem and the tractor fired right off. Your battery is in fact weak, but anytime you hear the magneto “click” it should fire regardless of how fast the engine is spinning. What I would do right now is jump your starter with a good 12V battery. All you need to do is ground the 12V battery with jumper cables close to the starter on the engine block, and then jump the positive straight to the starter terminal. I have done this several times in my videos, in my latest one you can see exactly how I do this. As long as you don’t crank for a real extended period of time the 6v starter will take it just fine. What jumping the starter is going to do is solve your slow crank problem, and that will also fix your compression issue. The engine is turning way too slow to get a good accurate compression reading, your losing it all to blow by past the rings, which every engine will have. The fact that it is moving the gauge at all turning that slow tells me that you don’t have a compression issue. So number 1, take the mag cap off and sand/clean your points. Once you do this check again for spark, if you have it then I bet she will run. Again the mag makes its own power so it’s independent of the battery. Once you have spark jump your starter with a good 12v battery and I bet she takes right off. Edit: watch my latest video of the cold start in the SC. At about 14:40 you can see how to jump it with 12v and jumper cables close
Awesome! Thank you so much! I will check it out.
Justin, glad to see that you're working on the SC again. Yes, charge the battery so that it turns over a little faster and check compression again. Have all spark plugs out when doing this. You may also want to squirt some oil into each cylinder to help the rings to seal, since the engine hasn't run in a long time. However, given the very low numbers you've gotten so far, I suspect that something else is wrong, such as valves being stuck open. I would take the valve cover off and observe the valve and rocker arm action while you crank it. Even if they are all moving correctly, it may be that they are not seating/sealing well enough. Fixing this would, of course, require pulling the valve train and the head, and give it a valve job. As for the spark issue, don't worry about the 6-volt system. It has nothing to do with the spark. All of the spark energy is created within the magneto itself. Think of it as a small generator or dynamo in-and-of itself. Magnetos need to spin with some speed in order to create enough voltage to fire a sparkplug. During normal slow cranking, a built-in device called an 1impulse coupling makes the magneto spin quickly for 180 degrees of rotation for each spark event. This coupling is the ''snap' sound you hear when each cylinder is supposed to fire. Other causes of a no-spark condition would be bad plug wires, a magneto that is inadvertently grounded, or an internal problem with the mag like bad points, bad cap, rotor, etc. The wires you have look like they may be the automotive style that many times have a carbon center conductor, instead of a good old copper wire. If so, get rid of them;-- magnetos do not like them. If the mag is grounded, i.e., in a 'turn the engine off' condition, it will not produce spark. If you look at the back of the mag's cap, where the plug wires connect, you'll notice a small terminal stud with a nut near the bottom. There may also be a small copper strap that can be depressed to ground that terminal. Originally, there would have been a wire connected to the terminal that ran up to a switch on the instrument panel. You would turn off the ignition by pushing in the switch, or by depressing the copper strap right on the mag. If somehow this terminal is grounded, you';ll never get spark. If you are unable to get your mag to produce spark, I would suggest having it tested and serviced by someone that does that work. While I haven't had occasion to use them, look at rebuiltmags Kenny Kizzle recommends them on his channel.
Wow Thank you so much for all the tips and advice. As I was editing this video I did have the thought that I didn't check my kill switch. I am pretty sure I had it open from the last time that I tried to start it but I am unsure. A silly thing to miss. So far I haven't been able to find much info on the magneto. I did find a parts manual but nothing as far as how to service them. I am one of those people where I really like to do things myself but at the same time I don't want to ruin it either. Again thank you so much for all the info. It's a big help!
I doubt he has any valve/ring issues. The fact that it is moving the gauge at all turning that slow tells me it’s just fine
Battery first!! Then wires, magneto!! Nice tractor!! just subscribed!!
Thank you for the input! Thank you for subscribing! I think it will be a really fun tractor if I can get enough time to work on it and get it running. Thank you again!
I would start with charging your battery Justin I think that is your main culprit right now From there, I would go with the new wires And then on to the magneto from there. Good luck
Thanks for the input Gary. I am going to try to get out there today and at the very least get the battery charging.
I have a small battery maintainer that I just go from tractor to tractor during the winter months It is 12 volt only. Everything that I have now I have converted to 12 volt except my big guy, the 2520 John Deere. That has 2 - 6 volt batteries wired on series For that, I hook the maintainer up at the starter where it is 12 volt and it charges both batteries that way
I really need to do better and keeping a charger on my batteries that don't get used much. I thought about converting to a 12 volt system but I like the idea of keeping it as original as possible.
Sorry Justin. I got interrupted and didn’t get only about 30 seconds into your video. I’m back now
Thanks for coming back and watching!
Good morning Justin ☕️☕️
Hi Gary!
Thank you this was helpful as I’m having to pull the clutch to tear into the engine of a brand new HPX615
I’m glad it helped!
Good luck with yours mine didn't work out worth a crap so i smashed it up with my skid steer and dumbed it in the scrap pile.
I know Harbor freight is really hit or miss/
My buddy had thst model for almost 20 years. He was a contractor. It held up pretty good. The switch doesn't last long.i borrowed it cople of years ago and did some work on it and it was running pretty good. Suggest you grease it good. I borrowed it this past summer to do a sidewalk on a rental. Had to do 20 bags of concrete. On the last bag the motor went. I told my buddy i would get him another one, but he said no. Habor Freight has a better model with a hard plastic tub that might be better.
I’m glad to hear that it lasted that long and worked that well. I hope mine will as well. Thank you.
I bought a similar type of mixer, cheap from a hardware store. I spent nearly 2 hours trying to get the blades inside the drum to lineup as the instructions made no sense. Sometimes it’s worth paying a little bit more than the cheapest possible, especially for something like this.
I would agree. However this will still be easier than hand mixing. If I did a lot of concrete type work I would have for sure gotten a nicer one. Thanks for watching and commenting!
One step closer to starting your project. Exciting!
Yep! I hope to be starting it this spring/summer
I bet it will hold up until you get your project completed. It sure beats mixing concrete in a wheelbarrow like I did for my small tool shed foundation. The paint will soon be covered up with concrete splatters 😀. I agree the paint job was sad and that it even got past any quality control checks - bet they don’t inspect, just box it up and ship it. Only concern is that the paint does not flake off in the drum and end up your finished project. It would be sad to see a bunch of flakes in your finished shop floor or patio.
I didn't think about the paint flacking in the drum. Thankfully the first thing I am doing with it is concrete for posts so the concrete will be under ground. Thanks for watching and commenting!
New tool day!! Nice man.
Thank you!

Thank you!
Anything that you buy now, the directions are terrible Usually, they are just drawings I think the first thing a guy should do is wad the instructions up and throw them in the trash They make good fire starter
I totally agree!

what size battery?
I can't remember off the top of my head but I think I was using a 9.0 battery. I have also used it with a 6.0 battery and it worked just as good.
We have the same brand heater at work, just the 180k BTU version....Friday it decided it didn't want to fire back up after I shut it down to move it...had to take it apart and clean the photocell, and took the spark plug out and clean the contacts on it too. Put it back together and it fired right up. It works great when it works, but occasionally it don't want to fire up especially when its cold in the mornings since they whine about having the heat on in the warehouse it gets down to whatever temperature it is outside, so the diesel heater don't wanna start in the mornings either LOL. Haven't had to get any parts for our diesel heater yet, but at least you could get parts for it, but for how long who knows. We used a propane heater previously and it went through a lot of propane, you'd spend more time refilling propane cylinders than you would heating anything LOL. So the diesel heater was a nice upgrade although in a 9 hour day it'll go through a 13 gallon tank of diesel.
I really love my heater. I think the only reason I had to do anything to it was because I use out in a building with dirt floors and it sucks up crazy amounts of dust. I go through about a gallon of diesel an hour when I am running it. the only down side I have with it is the noise so I can't have it running while I am recording. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@JustCaidsDayFarm At work we have a concrete floor in the warehouse so the filters don't suck up too much dust at least...but they suck up a lot of fuel, and they are extremely loud that's for sure. The heater works great for what its used for, but it won't work to heat the warehouse since they were cheap a**** and didn't do anything to insulate the building oh and the roof leaks so there's that problem too LOL.
Propane is expensive and puts a lot of moisture in the air, so you need good venting or your tools will rust from the condensation.
@@jxinx6812 Its a diesel heater.
@@jxinx6812 Its a diesel heater, and I should add the 14x12 garage door is wide open all day long, don't think the heater would cause any excess moisture than the 100% humidity due to the inversion in the area LOL.
Good repair; I'm glad you could find parts
Thank you! They were surprisingly easy to find.
Holy flame thrower!! Dang, glad everything is okay.
Yeah that was a little intense! I got lucky that nothing else happened.
Nice video. I have had the same one for about 15 years. I do use it very often each winter but have never opened her up. No maintenance ever. This was very helpful, thanks Justin.
Thank you. I think if I wasn't using it in a barn with dirt floors I would have not needed to touch it at all. But every year it sucks up a ton of dirt. I really love the heater!
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
Good morning Justin ☕️☕️
Hi Gary!

Isn’t the driver side the left side ? For the L head gasket? Doing my head gaskets now but can’t figure out the left and the right 😂
I am pretty sure it should be the left. I originally put the wrong gasket on and the realized and adopted it out. I did one side at a time try to avoid that mistake but still made it. Hope the swap is going well!
