Great highlight. Keep posting highlights from the early and mid 70's that've never been posted. That one was a gem!
I’ve got season highlights for 1975 and 1976 Roughriders coming
@@cflhighlights9370 that's amazing news. How soon?
@@Argonaut9Next Friday the 1975 ones will be up
One for part 2: ua-cam.com/video/pPVedC3TflM/v-deo.htmlsi=R4bfjJsmggV6vf9E
@@Devourer2000 I’ve got a big list for part 2 and that one’s on there!
@@cflhighlights9370 I've seen many Ticat losses over the years. This one still bugs me.
@@Devourer2000I can see why
This is why I feel the Canadian version of the sport is superior to the US version.
Love Buono but he didn't think this one through. There is no clock in this overtime format...they could run their offense as normal and attempt to score a TD. On a 3rd down they could then make a field goal attempt or a rouge then but why not try to drive the ball closer to the end zone and make that attempt easier before simply commtiting to making the score with one play like they did there? If you're going to attempt a rouge on either 1st or 2nd down don't do it in a punt formation because that tips your hand and allows the receiving team to send a punt returner in the end zone. Instead try to catch them by surprise with a quick kick from a normal offensive formation and then the defensive team might not have anyone back in the end zone. But even then the distance in this specific spot in the field would still require a pretty long and accurate punt. I think it would have been better to go on offense and try at minimum get another 7 or 8 yards (obviously if you can get a first down and continue the drive even better) and then on 3rd down from the 27 or 28 yard line either punt and get a rouge like they just attempted in this play here, or line up and attempt a field goal. If you kick a field goal then the game is over, but if you miss a field goal at least the ball is deep and your kick coverage might stop the returning team from getting out of the end zone and then score a rouge there.
Most of these kick attempts would make more sense to the uneducated viewers if most of the kickers could actually kick with some distance. The thought was correct but the execution was lacking in many of these plays.
For those of you who aren't understanding what is going on here's an explanation. In the CFL, anyone who kicks a ball (punt or field goal attempt or drop kick attempt), and the kicked ball is past the line of scrimmage, is turning the ball over to the opposing team. However as long as the ball ends up past the line of scrimmage (whether the kicker starts behind the line of scrimmage and kicks it over the line of scrimmage...or if the player runs past the line of scrimmage and then kicks it downfield) the kicker...or anyone who was behind the kicker when the ball was kicked...may run down field and recover the ball as it is live to them. All other players who were in front of the kicker are in an offside position and therefore must play the "no yards" rule and stay 5 yards away from the ball until an opponent touches it). If the ball does not end up past the line of scrimmage after being kicked this rule will not be in effect. Regardless of what down it was at the time of play, and regardless of how many yards the team on offense was required to get a first down, if they are able to recover the kick successfully in this manner they will get possession and reset the downs.
I remember watching this game........when I saw him let the bounce into the end zone, I literally yelled at the TV, "What the f*** are you doing???" 😅😅
Same but in my head…there were three people in the house asleep!
@@cflhighlights9370 LOL........good call!!!
Let’s go Saskatchewan roughriders
It’s called the rouge, and if I understand it correctly it applies to drop-kicks/punts as well. I actually kinda like it, wouldn’t mind it being introduced to American football with a minimum distance requirement. Would introduce a new dynamic to the game, and reaffirm the “foot” part of football in an era where all kicking plays aside from field goals are being devalued.
Wally Buono is the GOAT CFL coach!!
It's not ridiculous to have two games in a series with most total points being the winner. That's how a two-leg series works in a lot of soccer competitions around the world.
I was talking about each conference having different formats
Incredibly stupid rule
@@richardsimmonsjuggernautof9781 Incredibly misunderstood rule
@@cflhighlights9370 I understand it perfectly, it’s just Canadian nonsense
@@richardsimmonsjuggernautof9781 Not nonsense at all. If you kick the ball past the goal line you should get a goal.
I was but 15 months old when it happened, but the legendary tale has been ingrained in my memories of Rider lore. Thank you for visualizing it for me 61 years later. QB Ronnie Lancaster was my childhood hero and always will be, literally cradle to grave! ❤️ 🏈
The hand signal at 2:41 could possibly be a chop block?
@@kikastra Maybe
@@cflhighlights9370According to the Globe and Mail article from Nov 12 1963, I think the penalty was for "rough play". Quote: "Passes to end Jack Gotta and flanker Hugh Campbell and a rough play penalty against Stamps took Regina to the Calgary 25 on the next series of plays. Lancaster hit Buchanan in the end zone and Tripucka missed the convert try". Not conclusive, but seems to be the drive and that penalty.
How Andrew Harris wasn’t disqualified from the game in that first one is so dumb
A little clarification. They weren't divisions, they were conferences, and as such still had some autonomy in the league. So the league itself didn't just decide the conferences had their own playoff system, the conferences got to choose.

I really enjoyed watching your posting. A couple of points I found noteable: Lancaster's penchant for throwing interceptions & the poor kicking skills of those times. Thanks for your postng & I placed it in my playlist.
Love to hear comments like these!
Points for doing nothing is y i can't watch Canadian football.... Talk about handicapped match
@@SB1DAPRODUZAGTB A kick into the endzone isn’t nothing. The point is an incentive for the receiving team to have good field position.
Great video, and great format. Hope to see more like it!
I was at that game. Kent Austin had a ton of passing yards but no touchdowns. Hamilton won 20-16.
@@MPHamOnt I’ve been trying to find a coaching film of it. The Argos say they don’t have one. Really dying to see the missed field goal.
There were a lot of injuries because of the end zone fences...I remember these game and most of the names of players...
Why do the refs through the flags? Shouldn't they know that this is a legal play worth a point?
They did it because the Montreal player was closer than 5 yards to the Calgary player, not cause of the kick. They didn’t know off the top of their head if the Montreal player was behind the kicker so they throw it then check if he was.
Damn William Powell was so good …
Remember van Stone writing about this. Start of the Lancaster-Reed era, and Rider dominance in the West for the next dozen years.
@@teds5937 yes his article was my first introduction to this game
actually it was 16 years !! THE Riders held the record for most consecutive years in the playoffs at 16 ( 63 to 77 - missed in 77 with 8 - 8 record ) which stood untill eskimos bought 10 grey cups I can hardly wait to see ny friend Wayne Shaw to talk about it thanks a million for posting this
Now if you could only get your hands on the 1972 Western Final- Saskatchewan at Winnipeg…
This is one I would give anything to see again in its entirety (I was there). One of the most amazing games in CFL history!
There is a film of it I know of but the Bombers have copyright rights to it and are super protective about people getting it. They don’t allow it to end up online.
@cflhighlights9370 I can see that--a monumental embarrassment to them !
Awesome man- you are doing wonders for the CFL.
Thanks!
If the Riders had won the third game of the Western Final in 1963 they would have played Hamilton in the Grey Cup having played five playoff games in a two week span. Hamilton only played two playoff games a week apart.
Crazy stuff compared with the advocacy players have today when it comes to fairness for them
Which is why I always scoff at those fools who keep bringing up the "they've won only 4 Grey Cups in their history". Those people are ignorant of the old playoff format which made it extremely difficult to even get to a Grey Cup with any regularity, let alone win one...
Surely the eastern team would have to win two games and not just the one. They have to *definitely* win one game, but they also have to win at least one of the two finals games in order to get an aggregate lead? - you can't lose both games and still win.
No. If you finish first in the East you only have to win one game cause you don’t play in the semi final. The 1961 Ticats only won one game (East Final Game 2 48-2) and made it to the cup. They lost game 1 25-7 and never played in the semi, so they only won one game. To clarify, my scenario was a Grey Cup between the 1st place east team and the 2nd or 3rd place west team
@@cflhighlights9370 To be fair its not about winning one game.......they would have to play 2 games and its the number of games played that counts prior to the grey cup. Still a system that needed fixing.
@@danielzerbe8567yes of course
Geroy Simon made his 1000th reception in this game becoming the 3rd player in league history to do so. I was there
Horrible kicking and passing back then
It was a roughing penalty of some sort that set up the second Saskatchewan touchdown; it looks as though they had a different signal in those days. Frank Tripucka is the Saskatchewan kicker wearing #24. Ron Lancaster threw 45 passes that night and had 495 yards passing, both Western Conference playoff records at the time. Eagle Day threw just 18 passes. The Stampeders had four drives inside the Roughrider 20-yard-line without scoring a touchdown. Ed Buchanan had joined the Roughriders from the Stampeders just a month earlier, picked up on waivers, if I'm not mistaken. It was Earl Lunsford's last game; if he had carried just once more for 6 yards in the regular season (his career average was 5.9), he would have finished his career with exactly 1,200 carries for exactly 7,000 yards.
Correction: 492 yards passing for Ronnie.
I’m pretty sure it was roughing the passer
What a crazy game! Thank you for the excellent video sir.
It’s very interesting seeing how strategies have evolved over time, you don’t see teams opting to punt for a single rather than at least attempt a field goal in today’s game. Although with the amount of misses in this game I guess it’s not surprising. It’s also very interesting seeing how player safety was not that big of a concern back then, the fence at the back of the end zone, a multiple playoff game series rather than a single game in a short period of time and even that hit at 8:08 would undoubtedly result in an unnecessary roughness penalty now. Really cool time capsule though and amazing footage, glad you uncovered it!
That kind of officiating is why my parents stopped going to the games back in those days; that non-incompletion is as bad a call as I've ever seen. Bill Miller was clearly clotheslined well out of bounds, but there was no way the Riders were going to have the calls going against them at home. Dave Skrien, in "Countdown to Grey Cup," mentioned the remarkable difference in the number of penalties between the Roughriders and visiting teams at Taylor Field. That's not to mention the notorious Taylor Field timekeeper, who made sure the seconds ticked by ever so slowly in the last few minutes when Ron Lancaster was trying to lead a late rally to win the game. It's not a coincidence that the 20-second clock was first tested at Taylor Field during the 1980 season. There was a plank that jutted out of one of the cut-off corners in the smaller-than-regulation-size end zone at Taylor Field, and a B.C. defensive back named Craig Murray was lucky not to lose an eye when it went between the top of his helmet and his face mask.
Well done. Man, have kickers & punters ever improved.
Larry Robinson missed 4 field goals that night.
@@orbyfan Somebody tell Brett Lauther; he'd enjoy hearing that...

Yeah! CFL the Cool Fun League
Good old days
28:57 Taking a safety up 2 is absolutely crazy
I know, wild decision. But a field goal would have been likely scored if they punted
This score there showing was wrong it was not 48-25sask. It was 35-33 Winnipeg
This is from 2013 not two hours ago
I bought this film to make a compilation of missed field goals punted out of the end zone. But this game is so iconic it felt wrong to not share more of it with everyone. Unfortunately I can't post the full, unedited 32 minute long film as I only asked the league for permission to highlight certain moments from this game. There are certain people who sell any film or game they get their hands on, which is great when I need to buy something they have, but isn't great when them selling copyrighted material could lead to you not being able to get any films ever again.
Let’s go riders win the banjo bowl final championship 2024 beat the freaking bombers
