    I have this machine. At the top by the solenoid relay I see a red button. Is this a momentary button or switch? Mine appears to be broken. Also dumb question, what is this switch for?

    Was there other PIA part numbers besides the 6821 PIA that pinball games used? I forgot which pinball game in the 70's ballys, williams, gotliebb but there was a laundry list of dipswitch settings that was on the backdoor of the backbox which you had to save each dipswitch setting to EPROM or RAM one at a time which took hours to do. Any reasons why they did this? I think it was for the william systems 3,4 or a gotliebb MPU board. Most IRQ signals are generated from what in arcade games because ROM chips don't output IRQ signals any reasons why ROM chips don't output IRQ signals? Most ROM chips have a ROM signature value but how to you calculate the ROM signature value using a handheld calculator?

  • @billwilliams6338
    @billwilliams6338 5 років тому

    The williams system 1,2,3 and ballys system 1,2,3 motherboards had dipswitches you had to save for each configuration one at a time, any reasons why you have to save each setting one by one? Why does the driver boards use a PIA chip and not go direct to the CPU and not use a PIA chip?

    • @WarpZoneArcade
      @WarpZoneArcade 5 років тому

      Thanks for the comment. The first Williams solid state systems were System 3, 4, 6, 6a (Firepower), and 7. The classic Bally systems were -17 and -35. The DIP switch adjustments and the internal adjustments (stored in RAM) configure different things but you would have to ask the developers why they chose to make some things configured by DIP and some by software adjustments. My guess would be that the DIP switches are more for things that would be common to all games and the software adjustments are more of a per game adjustment, but I've never really though about it. As far as the PIAs are concerned, they're required to multiplex the outputs of the CPU. I would recommend reading through the 6821 PIA data sheet to get a better understanding of how it works and why it might have a place in a pinball machine.

    Despised Linear flippers first time I saw them in '81 [45;00] I made my own expander board just used a 6V relay much simpler, if your worried about the incandescent light burning out you can put a 200 ohm resistor across it's socket contacts.[1:00] I would've swapped U10 first [1:06] don't short switch wires together that's why there are isolation diodes Hand held oscilloscope good tool for checking strobes and power supply ripple

    • @WarpZoneArcade
      @WarpZoneArcade 5 років тому

      Thanks for the comments. Good suggestion about using the 6V relay for the expander board. You won't break anything shorting the strobes to returns the way I demonstrated in the video. Electrically it's no different than closing all of the switches in that row/column at the same time. You've also got diodes in series with the PIA outputs driving the switch strobes and current limiting resistors on both the strobes and returns on the MPU. This method also has the benefit of checking the strobe and return sides of the circuit at the same time. Your strobes may look all good with an oscilloscope but you could still have a problem with the return side of the circuit on the MPU. I agree that an oscilloscope would be a great method to check the strobes, but not strictly necessary to fix these kinds of issues, in my opinion. I could have swapped U10 and U11 first to see if the problem changed, installed a new U10, or better yet checked the outputs of the PIA with a logic probe or oscilloscope. None of those would have solved the issue in this case, but logically it is a good suggestion. I don't like pulling chips if I don't have to. If I would have seen issues with the test I did then I would have moved on to troubleshooting issues with the MPU, like a bad U10. Thanks again for the feedback, it's much appreciated.

    We have a problem with left flipper failure on a Williams Earthshaker machine. We are following your video and learning much, but we are not very experienced with electronics to this much detail. Machine diagnostics tell us a problem with switch 58. With this information, can we infer that it is not a problem with the flipper solenoid? At a loss as to our next move....... we're in NE Pa. Any comments or help would be appreciated.

    Someone mentioned that the sounds are wrong. They're not "wrong" but most Elektras are adjusted to a different setting, which makes better sounds. Page 7 of the Elektra manual shows the sound options. Setting self test position 18 to "03" will make most scoring have a "noise effect with background". This is the setting most people are familiar with. The machine in the video has the setting at "00" or "01". If you're running a stock MPU board with no battery or a dead battery, the sounds will revert to 00 when the machine is restarted. Use a battery or NVRAM, or an Alltek replacement board, to keep the sound settings at 03.

    @19:20 CONVENTIONAL current flows the other way around, or it would just choose to go through the diodes instead of the coils (path of least resistance as you say).

I found out that both flippers are not working in the test program also I checked the fuses they are all one. I have seen in your video that the power must be around 43v I have only 18v I learned some tips from the video and will look further Roger Amsterdam Netherlands
