As an outdoor enthusiast and landscape photographer I share some of my adventures in short videos. In particular, I enjoy longer backpacking trips in the northern parts of Europe.
Yes, all this is for fun and not for money - enjoy :)!

Autumn in Lapland - From Nikkaluokta to Abisko on Twisted Paths - 16 Days Solo Hike
This film is about a solo hike in Swedish and Norwegian Lapland in September. I did not follow the "standard" itinerary which is the famous King's trail (Kungsleden) but rather a zig-zag route through the mountains preferring less frequented areas.
The weather was very changeable (sun, rain, some snow) and oftentimes there was a strong wind. It was a memorable adventure in a beautiful landscape.
My rough route was as follows:
Nikkaluokta - Visttasvággi - Kaskasavagge - Tarfala - Guobirvággi - Gautelis - Čáihnavággi - Čunojávri - Alesjaure - Unna Visttasvággi - Vistas - Alisjávri (Sami Settlement) - Abiskojaure - Kårsavagge - Abisko

Rogen Nature Reserve (Sweden) - by Water and by Land
We spent some summer days in the Rogen Nature Reserve located in Sweden (close to the Norwegian border). Using a packraft and our feet we got an impression of the unique landscape in this area. Unfortunately, due to weather conditions we couldn't do all we wanted and the trip was shorter than planned. The drone sequences in this video are officially approved by Lantmäteriet.

This short film is about a multi-day ski trip in and around Sarek national park in Swedish Lapland. While there were also some days with less than perfect conditions we were mostly lucky with the weather and had time to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Our route: Saltoluokta - Aktse - Rapadalen - Bierikjávrre - Sluggá - Pietsaure - Saltoluokta Many thanks to Udo Kellner who joined me on this advent...
South of Padjelanta - A backpacking trip in Lapland that didn't go as planned
This video is about a summer backpacking trip in Swedish Lapland south of Padjelanta National Park. Our hike was in July. In the beginning it was unusually warm and water levels in the rivers were high. Unfortunately, we couldn't complete our hike as planned (a circular route from Kvikkjokk via Padjelanta and Sarek) as we needed to backtrack when we encountered a stream that was impassable (we ...
Laugavegur in Iceland - Crowded but Beautiful
This video is about a hike on Iceland's most famous (and crowded ;-)) trail in the summer of 2020. Laugavegur leads from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk across the Icelandic highlands (there is a continuation to Skógar which we didn't do). Due to the pandemic, in 2020 there were less hikers than usual - but still plenty. The landscape is really beautiful and thus I can recommend the trail.
Early march 2020: Just before the global pandemic fully started my wife and I traveled to the Swedish village Nikkaluokta. We rented a small cabin and spent some days relaxing and exploring the surroundings. This time no big outdoor adventure ;-)! We knew Nikkaluokta from a summer backpacking trip. In comparison to summer it was not very crowded. There are marked winter trails in the area, in p...

This video is about another solo hiking adventure in the autumnal Lapland. Starting in Norway and the Norwegian Rago NP, I crossed over to Sweden where I traversed the Padjelanta and Sarek NPs. My endpoint was Kvikkjokk. It really was a memorable trip - it is hard to say which part of my hike, which lasted two weeks, I enjoyed the most. Of my worst day unfortunately no footage exists - only mem...

Summer in northern Scandinavia: It never gets dark. This video is about a summer hike in the mountains of Nowegian and Swedish Lapland. We had lots of sun - but also some gloomy days. Our backpacking trip started at the train station in Katterat (Norway) and ended in Nikkaluokta (Sweden). We had plenty of time and sometimes spent more than one night in a place. 👍👍👍👍👍
Beautifully captured, the landscape is fantastic, everything was filmed beautifully. And there's a fitting musical accompaniment, great.
Thank you very much! I'm very happy that you like it.
thanks for the wonderful Skandinavien colors.which camera and tent du you Use?
Thanks to you! I used a Sony A7RIII.
Jesus Christ that bridge 🥴
Yes, the bridge is "special" 😁.
This was really well done mate. Thank you for this beautiful production. I'm quite amazed by the many beautiful compositions you have captures on this trip and so well put together. 👏🏻 Makes me want to go hiking again 🇳🇴
Thank you very much 🙂! I'm doing the very thing and going hiking from next week.
Amazing journey and video. I’ve been to many of these areas skiing and trekking. But your devious route, criss crossing between these areas is staggering! I need to get the map out to trace this , it’s just incredible. Thanks for this.
Thank you very much. The route changed dynamically during the trip. Originally I had a different idea but the weather conditions made my original plan seem inappropriate (at least for the first days).
Grandiose Bilder, angenehm kurz geschnitten Filmsequenzen, insgesamt ein Meisterwerk!
Ganz herzlichen Dank, Martin!
Thank you for the beautiful film. It’s incredibly well-shot, and you've captured the Swedish mountains so wonderfully🇸🇪🏔❤️
Thank you very much! Your comment really means a lot to me! 🙂
hi.. i live there..(saltdal)
If you're also into hiking/outdoor activities you are really lucky living in such an area!
Very nice video! It must have been a memorable trip!
It really was. Thanks you 🙂!
When in September did you go? I'm planning a similar trip this year and would love to hear what comfort level sleeping gear and tent you're using. Thanks a lot in advance!
Thanks for your question! My hike was from the 3rd to the 19th of September. I was using a down sleeping bag (Western Mountaineering) rated at roughly -5 °C. It lacked a bit in freezing temperatures because of its age (but I was fine with more clothing). I had it serviced since then and now it is much warmer again. My tent was a Hilleberg Unna 1 person tent. I will use the same setup (+ possibly a packraft) for this year's Lapland hike.
Jättevackert. Mellan vilka datum var det här?
Tack så mycket! Mellan den 3 och 19 september 2023.
When in September did you go? Fantastic video.
Thanks for your interest. My hike was from September 9 to 23.
Tack för en fin film. Och för inspirationen.
Tack så mycket!
Such a dedication to make this video , yette bra
Thanks a lot 🙂!
Great video! I admire it!
Many thanks to you 🙂!
Stunning, and beautifully produced. I love the care you put into every detail.
Thanks a lot, Michael! That's probably why it took me almost one year after the trip 😉.
Beautiful 😍
Einfach nur schön 👌 Danke Stefan. ✌️ atemberaubende Bilder und Zeitraffer. Klasse 👍
Herzlichen Dank, Florian 🙂!
This is amazing!! I just got into packrafting and discovered this when looking for trekking pole camera rig... Subscribed! (still editing my first packrafting video, lol newbies)
Thanks a lot 🙂! I'm a beginner in packrafting myself. I don't have high ambitions and am happy to paddle on mostly calm waters. The trekking poles are by Novoflex. You can unscrew the handle and there is a tripod mount beneath.
@@stefan.rieger lol same here - I got the Alpacka Scout, which is designed for calm waters :D Thanks for letting me know, I was wondering what the trekking pole model is! Nice!
@@pikkea Possibly there are more trekking pole models that have this feature since we're living in the age of selfie sticks 🤣. A packraft gives you more options even if you're mostly hiking - it has happened to me that I got stuck due to high water levels on a hike. It's not something for ultralight, however. But I'm far from that anyway. If I would be, I could not have made the video in the first place 😉.
Traumhaft schöne Bilder, super schöne Musik und ganz toller Soundmix on Top! Danke für diese wunderschöne Reise! Ich bin überwältigt und komplett geflashed!
Vielen lieben Dank!
Stunning video! The scene at 19:23 is just superb; I love the contrast between the autumn colours and the far snow-capped peaks. May I ask how many batteries did you carry for your camera? And did you also bring a solar charger or simply a normal one to charge them? Thanks!
Thank you very much, Giacomo! This is the beauty of autumn, that you can have both, the beautiful colors and a fresh dusting of snow on the peaks 🙂. I brought 5 spare batteries for my Sony A7RIII but didn't use them all. I also had two powerbanks (10000 mAh) for charging other devices, but didn't empty them either. In my opinion in late summer/autumn a solar charger usually isn't worth it in the high north. In mid summer this can be different for longer self-sustained trips (for me the break-even regarding weight was about 2,5-3 weeks). During that time of year you can charge till late in the evening or early in the morning. Of course it also depends on the weight of the charger, how much power you need, etc. There are very light and cheap USB chargers (~35g), which I can recommend. My camera supports charging in camera, too. So I bring the USB charger only if I suspect that my battery supply might not suffice or I plan with a lot of charging (also via solar).
@@stefan.rieger thanks a lot for replying!

Thanks a lot for your feedback 🙂! I'm sorry that I have no map. If you have any specific questions, feel free to send me an email via the contact page of my website. I'll try to help you.
Good job putting together this film!
Thanks a lot!
This is one of the best film I have seen. I lika also to go off trail. More of this! Me like!
Thank you!
Everything in the video is mesmerising: the landscape, the snow, the streams, the stillness of the air and the music.
Many thanks for your kind comment 🙂! I'm glad you like the video!

So beautiful, I'll do a 2 Weeks hike from Saltoluokta to Ritsem (part of Kungsleden and the Padelantaleden) and wanted to get in the mood by watching this,...what can I say, can't wait to get to the trail after this awesome video, thank you! When did you do this trip? It looks like late in summer.
Many thanks for your comment 🙂! This hike was in September. I really like that time of year for hiking in northern Scandinavia. The hike from Saltoluokta to Ritsem via Kungsleden and Padjelantaleden traverses a very beautiful landscape, too. I'm sure you'll have a great time! Enjoy 🙂!

The scene at 15:20 is simply brilliant. I think Lapland will be on my agenda again next autumn. What a great film.
Hallo Udo!
Thanks a lot! It was a really special morning. I had stayed alone in the Vistas hut's winter room and woke up to this sunrise 🙂. Looking forward to our trip next winter!
I was been there 28 years ago, in June 1996. But in the higher areas around Nallo it was impossible to walk, there was still al lot of soft snow. Now I will come again in End of August. But I was many times in other areas for hike. Sarek, Padjelanta, Sulitjelma, Mavas/Pieskehaure, Femundsamrka, Dovrefjell etc.
@@wildlife-tv_Bernd_AttnerHello Bernd, that sounds great. I'd be delighted if we could spend a few days up there together. Actually, I was in the area straight after my A-levels 41 years ago. I travelled over to Sweden from Narvik. And then down to Kvikkjokk. I also spent several days in the Sarek. Greetings Udo also to the film maker Stefan for a great landscape film.
Great Video, those are rare!!! Lapland's mountains are with the clouds, new snow really nice! Good to see your work. Udo
Many thanks Udo for your kind comment! It was really beautiful and I was happy about the new snow on the mountains 🙂!
Thank you Stefan! Thank you!! This was so incredible! So beautiful! Thank you very much for the most epic hike movie from Lapland ever. I’ve been hiking a lot of these lands myself but never in one and the same hike. What a hike! Waow! How many km and days? Thank you for sharing a film like this. So true. So real. No fake. No talking. No nothing but the pure wilderness. You made my eyes get moisty by tears 🤩 Really really thank you for showing us all the real beauty of Lapland. Epic!❤️🙏🏻
Many many thanks for your enthusiastic comment! I didn't expect a comment like yours 🙂. I'm really happy if it inspires people. Believe it or not, I don't do this for likes but mostly for myself, family and friends 😉. And yes, it was an awesome experience, although of course there were also uncomfortable moments.😄 To answer your questions: It was 16 days and about 220 km in total. On some days I walked only a short distance because I found a place I liked.
wow what a beautiful trip . Thank you for sharing.
Thanks a lot 🙂!

Thank you, Ivan! My hike started at the 8th September (roughly two weeks). So neither early nor late 🙂.

Many thanks for your kind comment! I'm happy that you liked the video 🙂!
Hi Stefan. beautifull video (a lot of work), you have named the different places you have crossed, very useful for me, I have the projet next September to hike the region of Vaimok, Pieske, Stadda. I have a question : how is the trail between Pieske and Stadda, not too much water ?
Hi Gilbert, thanks a lot 🙂! The section you mentioned should not pose any problems. It is marked and if I remember correctly there were two bridges across the larger streams. September really is a good time to hike there. Enjoy!
Your captivating video of a lesser-known national park in Norway was very pleasant to watch. It appears remote, reminiscent of distant destinations like Mongolia.
Many thanks for your kind comment! While not as remote as Mongolia it is far from crowded and there's lots of options for hiking.
Would love to hike here but the brown bears, wolverines, and lynxs scare me... I heard there are a lot of them here, is that true? I would like to hike solo, but not sure if it's safe or not
These animals are very shy. I never saw any bears or other predators and they are very rare. You can do solo hikes without problems or fear of bears. I do so myself.
