Murphy's Law - The Tides Are Turning
From their 1998 album "Never The Same Way Twice".
Song written by one of the members, Carl Sooley.
Lyrics:
[Verse]
The tides are now turning,
The boats are all gone.
And the fishermen don't fish anymore.
The nets are all pulled up,
And stowed in their sheds.
While the mid summer days are not over.
[Verse]
The government has closed down the fishery,
And there's no work to be done..
Boats are hauled in the beaches,
Where the summer sun bleaches.
And the paint peels and cracks in the sun.
[Verse]
Gone are the fish sheds along the ridge road
I remember so well as a boy
Flakes can't be found now along the sea shore
With the salt cod spread neatly to dry.
[Verse]
Those scenes are now only memories,
Of a time when the fishing was best.
And the heroes back then were the proud fishermen.
Who are now paid to stay home and rest.
[Verse]
The tides are now turning,
Small wharfs are no more.
Made from loggers with bark peeled clean,
Splitting tables and puncheons aren't there anymore.
Blubber barrels no more can be seen.
[Verse]
And the boats that danced on the collar,
Now lie to rot in the sand.
For the pride has been stripped from the face and the lips,
Of the sea stained but proud fishermen.
Yes the pride has been stripped from the face and the lips,
Of the sea stained but proud fishermen.

From their 1998 album "Never The Same Way Twice". Song written by one of the members, Ken Campbell. He dedicated the song to Martin Sillett, Gus Bennett, & Paulus Semigak. For further context, the band recorded this album in Happy Valley Goose Bay (Newfoundland), so I would assume they were based out of Labrador. Lyrics: *Verse* I left with the band, That cold winter's day. On grudging machines...

He gathered all his family by his side, He kissed his darling mother. A mother's hopes and dreams were crushed that da...

From their 2003 self-titled album. This song was written in the 1940's by the late Joseph (Duffy) O'Brian, and was picked up by his now-late friend Cleve Best. (Note that the spelling on Joseph's name and nickname could be incorrect, i.e., O'Brian vs. O'Brien, and Duffy vs. Duff). There is a TV recording of Cleve, called Homemade Jam, in which he said Duff lived down in Maple Valley, which migh...

Gordie Sampson played guitar on this track…such an incredible talent in every way…my heart breaks that this band didn’t last very long. I was very lucky to be associated with this incredibly talented bunch of people for such a short time

It's been a while since I posted the video, but I would have labelled it based on what they said or what was indicated elsewhere. As for it not being Trip To The Cottage, yes, its not the tune more commonly known by that name. With that said, it's not uncommon for tunes to be mislabelled or multiple tunes to have the same name

Thanks for uploading this! I discovered Cleve Best’s Homemade Jam version maybe a year or two ago, and the Newfoundland Railway itself probably around the same time. Amazing rail line and sad that it’s gone, suffered much the same fate as so many other railroads. I also came up with these lyrics to fit in between the second and third verses: “Now we’re on to Clarenville, through the forests we will go. You can feel the wheels rumbling, as the cars rock to and fro. On to Gambo and to Gander, then Bishop’s Falls is next. We’re nearly halfway home now on the Newfoundland Express.”

Thank you Mac. Ed probably knew it by one of the Canadian or Quebec names for the tune, seems there are a few of those as well (see tune #143 on TheSession), e.g., "Reel De Voyageur" and "The Laborer’s". Will update the video title as such
