Welcome everyone!
I'm Andrew! I'm a doctoral candidate in violin performance and overtly enthusiastic teacher; I have decided to create this channel to more easily disseminate some of my thoughts on music-making and violin-playing to my students, and of course any and all are welcome to watch and/or comment.
I will try to keep all of videos short, sweet, and to the point! My goal is to break down and simplify some of the more confusing aspects of music. Violin playing is difficult enough: half the trick of playing well is making it easier, right?
There may be an occasional live-performance video posted on this channel as well. To the professionals who view them: I encourage all to remember that mistakes do happen in live performances even to the best of us, and I make no claim to be the best of us. To the students who view them: I encourage all to remember that mistakes do happen in live performances, and I make no claim to be the best of us.
HAPPY PRACTICING!

Jean-Féry Rebel: "La Forcroy"
A version of Rebel's 1713 Sonata in E minor found in a 1720 manuscript. The nickname found in that manuscript, "La Forcroy," likely refers to gambist Antoine Forqueray.

This is why I will never use gut strings, too much effort
I can hold the violin very well, but when I read the music in front of me, the violin tends to slide down and inhibits my vibrato. I have never heard anyone else say this.
I think the second to last tip is especially important to keep the palm away from the string while resting. I also have personally found Aquila to be the overall most stable string because they make their strings with unsplit lamb gut as opposed to some of the other makers who combine different strands of gut from various sources. Gamut was for the last few years using beef gut strings and I heard a noticeable difference from their older strings.
What bow are you using for this, out of interest? Looks like a period one? (Does that make a big difference to your technique/results?)
fun fact: its an image of a cat but in notes
amazing job on this, those bowings look like they were nightmarish to figure out
Thank you so much for this video. This is very helpful! 😄
Thank you so much fo this video. This is very helpful! :)
Very helpful thanks
I really like this , thanks
I took up the violin as a second instrument ( BMus in classical guitar at Sydney Conservatorium) and just always used a shoulder rest. I never thought anything of it until just now, literally this video now. I can't believe how easily it came to my body as I thought NO this will just be too difficult. While I think I'll carry on with my Bonmusica rest I now know that should I ever need to (desert Island scenario lol) that I could do it. It still amazes me that I don't/didn't feel some weird unnatural feeling without a shoulder rest and I've tried most all during the last two + decades of playing. Thank you for this insight into what I genuinely thought quite impossible for me. We do amaze oursevesves do we not? Great video, Thank you !!
Hey man, best guide on this. You're saving my jawline!
Love your ballad voice. 👏👏👏❤️
Some of these don't make sense for keeping in tune but some are good.
Thank you so much for this helpful video! I have been trying to play without a shoulder rest and I have found it very frustrating to do vibrato. This makes so much sense. I was thinking that I had to be away from the neck. My think my teacher doesn’t want me to put my thumb under the neck.
What A and E strings do you use (brand)?
Gamut is a pretty reliable choice that I usually keep in my case, but I quite like Kürschner E strings if I can get them, and Cordedrago is usually a good choice too. I haven't had much luck with Toro or Aquila, personally, but lots of people prefer them!
Very helpful. Thank you.
Thanks
What do you think about Wallace Richey?
Thanks for the tip. I've been playing bear back for several months and have played my best songs that way. I like the support of an everest shoulder rest but have to secure chin rest onto violin. I believe the pinching affects tone and low end. So I removed everything and play in a baroque manner. I never have liked the pinching of the upper and lower plates. The Luther spent considerable time and energy graduating the plates so the top could move and respond to vibration and frequency why would anyone want to pinch it off? Let's say your best friend is to your left and your sitting in orchestra how do you put the violin on its side to avoid blinding your friend with your bow? Can't do it because your locked in with that damn shoulder rest the chin rest doesn't help either. You go fella I'm glad to see someone else plays bareback!😅

A beautiful and great recording! I like it very much! Thanks for uploading!
Very nice! Thank you. Nicola Porpora Is not played as often as I would like to hear.
A magnificent portrayal of harmony in rhythmic theatre. Brava
Wonderful discovery to see these young people enjoying ancient music and playing it so well with such enthusiasm..
Well done 👏 That was so beautifully sung and played by everyone. The baroque sound is so special and rich, and Rameau so virtuositic particularly for the violin. How you fitted in all those notes with natural gift. And I enjoyed the balance hearing all the instruments together. Great recording in a fabulous acoustic.
This is very thorough. Thank you. I’m going to experiment with trying these different methods. Ps could you explain about the feel of the left arm when doing vibrato, for example: a) should the left arm: bicep, forearm etc be as relaxed as possible or should there be some tension? b) do you think of any feeling of balance and a ‘complete connection’ and balance between the left shoulder and the hand during vibrato? I feel with my own vibrato that the set up (the way I hold the violin) causes left arm tension that blocks the vibrato so it becomes too slow.
Alrightyyy I'll try it.🕶️
That was beautiful 💕💕💕 I will be watching 🤗🥰🥰
Very correct indeed!!!!!
Thank you for your guidance!
Very good tips, Andrew. I really want to play without the shoulder rest and will try again using your tips. Shifting was problematic because I felt like I had to clamp down on the instrument with my jaw to freely move my hand...your hand seems to coast along without your head locking down or your shoulder pressing up! Many Thanks.
Thanks. This helps a lot. Including that small note about shifting with the thumb. I was led to believe that you should be able to support the violin consistently with your chin, leaving the left hand completely free. Just a beginner.
I'm only playing 4months but I like your way of explaining it! I vibrato like on my guitars up n down n was told!stop doing it That way! I was shocked my hand couldn't vibrato! I got over 45 yrs on guitar n 10 on piano's
😂😂
Too soft , difficult to hear .... Pray :: louder sound in future .......pray😊
I see your violin "shaking" a bit when you do vibrato, mine does this too and i just started playing the violin, i thought this was a problem, is it supposed to be doing that because I've seen some peoples violin being basically completely still while doing vibrato?
Thanks. The left thumb has the job of supporting my violin-I often forget that it has to be UNDER the neck rather than left of the neck as it was when using a shoulder rest. I’ve been attempting to play without a shoulder rest because of comfort issues with one. I’ve found helpful a sling that connects the violin to my body. It keeps the violin from sliding away from my neck and swinging to the right. Do a search using the term “happynex” or “Ithaca strings fiddle strap“ to find them. It’s really easy to make, even without a sewing machine.
You have a talent for this - you're going to be a great teacher. Boil issues down to their essence and let students find their own way rather than being dogmatic. More please!
Far too many teachers say "this is the one true way" - usually just whatever works for them or was passed on by their own teacher. So it's really helpful to find a teacher like you who demonstrated the options and helps empower students to find solutions that suit their own physique and artistic priorities.
Thank you so much for this video. I am just learning the violin, and I feel that your four main points about how to hold the violin are already helping me develop a comfortable and sustainable way to play the instrument. I have not seen these tips anywhere else, so i really appreciate you putting this out there!
🕯️🤝
Most of this video is good idea.s. but no, wide vibrato in high positions is a bad idea. The pitch will be too wide and will sound and be out of tune. Also, I believe the reason for that position is to keep the resonance of the instrument open and to allow for a FAST vibrato, not so much wide.
Hi, Andrew! Thanks a lot. You helped me too much with this video. And I enjoyed watching you, because you are pretty cute. Regrats, Christopher.
Nati has such passion in the way she sings, and her voice is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever heard.
