The Day Triathlon Forever Changed
Переглядів 1,9 тис.Рік тому
We speak, video podcast style, to Beth and Luke McKenzie of Wyn Republic Clothing. In 2013, during the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Luke forever changed the sport of triathlon in two ways. We discuss them both, and also talk about what it's like to start a clothing company. It was a fun discussion and a nice trip down memory lane for us. I hope you enjoy.

Aero Tested: Silca Aero Socks. Do thy really make you faster?
Переглядів 16 тис.Рік тому
We gave the Silca Aero Socks the Fast or Fiction treatment to see if they actually reduce drag. 3 men and 2 women tested them against their typical race setup to see if we could find any reduction in drag. This was initially supposed to be a test between the Silca Socks vs the Rule 28 Aero Socks but since both socks tested similarly, we decided to just include the Silca's because they are so mu...
Fast or Fiction: Does a bottle down the front of your kit make you more aero?
Переглядів 32 тис.Рік тому
Is it really more aero to put a bottle down the front of your kit? Gustav Iden did it on his way to winning Kona last year, and more and more athletes are following suit. We tested 9 athletes to see if it was more aero for them. The results are fascinating! Link to testing data: erohighperformance.com/test-results/phjljmjk5thswg63jzq9ni0seh8apd

Timothy O'Donnell - Pro Triathlete
Переглядів 4 тис.7 років тому
Ironman Champ, Timothy O'Donnell, came into the ERO Fit Studio for some bike fit and aero testing.
thanks for the review, it’s really great content for nerds and freaks like me
Would you be able to do a video on using wider wheels and wider tires? I'd like to use wider tires for more comfort and safety but would like to also know if they are slower. For example, the new P5 can take a 34 tire.
The AIS tested them over a mix of climbing and descending and found that areo socks give you 2.5 Watts. Considering I ride at around 200 Watts, this hardly makes any difference so it is really a matter of taste. If you are racing, then sure, but for the average rider they aren’t worth it.
Funny thing, Wout was listed at 187cm until the new technical regulations came out for 2023. He magically grew just enough to meet the category 3 height requirement.
Didn’t Dan Biggles invent the ribbed under vest for the Danish track team?
2 days ago this was on sale on bikeinn, Large size and S-M both available. S$607 (usd 449). A bit expensive but the thing that prevented me from pulling the trigger is both the price and that i could not really find a clear front visor, which i believe the (big) visor being a significant component in helping this achieve the low drag. 1 day later the Large size went OOS and 2 days later the S-M also went OOS. I'll just settle for my Met drone which i managed to get the 2024 UAE Team emirates colourway and comes with clear visor, still "cool" enough for my riding type (solo, duathlons, training etc, early mornings and night riding so not much sun, if any at all). Also the Spiuk Ardea TT helmet which has a clear visor too.
This is also available on Rudy's AU website, but they only ship to countries near AU.
thank you for finding and sharing these results!
Your testing of the Rudy Project WingDream aero helmet is very helpful. One thing that I have struggled with about aero helmets is adequate wind blockage during long > 3 hr ride for an Ironman. The wind commonly causes blurred vision in my eye 2 - 3 hrs into long rides and races. The best solution that I have found is ditching the aero visor and using the biggest sunglasses that I can find. Most certainly I am losing some aerodynamic advantage of the helmet but I've found it better to be able to see what's in front of me than a few watts. Am I the only one with this dilemma? It would be nice to hear your testers address the visor in this regard.
The original saddle position is not necessarily bad. Not everyone pedals the same way. Some people put most of their muscle contraction at the extended position which can be more powerful than starting the contraction at the beginning of the stroke with the knee bent at its maximum and with the muscles at their weakest position.
I don't know how many of you have seen/read the UCI TT guidebook. Its tedious, and this gentleman right here just gave out a gold standard summery of it.
Would have been interested in testing the MET Drone against the wingdream
Great video and testing, just ordered one this morning!
Do we have a review out for the Giro healthy?
Super interesting content. 😎
Would you be willing to explore road bike TT or road bike general position optimization? This could apply to road cyclists, Road TT riders, and triathletes on a budget.
At 59 there is absolutely no piece of gear that is going to make me any faster Loosing 10 lbs would probably be a much better financial investment for me 😂
Unless you're getting significantly slower every single day, this just isn't true. And unless you have the very best gear, you're better off buying the gear, getting fit for aerodynamics and gaining an additional 10lbs.
Great content
New sub - If it looks fast etc - I used to do a lot of TT when I lived in Dubai went through various hemetsand one of the first wattshop high hand bars ending up with +80 ftp and -30mins on a desrt 50km circuit - I'm a bit out of the loop but before i watched I could see off the splash screen this will be fast as I'm not the most aero. Will be digging out my TT rig for uk riding next year
lol it's definitely released. i know because i have one.
Yes. Not yet in North America, but in other areas.
I saw it on bikeinn, SGD 607 / USD 449 on 15th dec . White colourway, S-M and L sizes available. OOS now 2 days later.
Very cool! Do you also plan to test the Giro Aerohead 2?
If you are a triathlete that is a very annoying helmet for long distance....great for TT.s but not much faster than the previous giro .
We’ll definitely test it, but I’ve heard it’s all bark and no bite. Not really that great.
@@fastorfictionHi Jim I have the Lazer Volante helmet, would be great if it’s tested by you when having the time
Not sure if this is correct! There was a test in downhill skinning in Switzerland with Olympic Champion Dominique Gisin. The proof was that open hair was even a benefit.
"If it means going faster, triathletes are going to buy it" Truer words never spoken. Triathletes will spend thousands of dollars to save seconds on their split so they can get 34th in their AG at their local 70.3
😂😃
Interesting tests, thanks. I know the channel is primary for triathlete/TT gear but I'd love (and would trust your results) for this type of test on road aero helmets.
Feels forced! If pros are not using it, it’s not fast!
Pros use what they’re paid to use. Never forget they’re contractually obligated to say positive things about the products they use.
Sorry if I missed it, but out of interest, what speed did they test at?
They test at their race pace. All are front of the pack athletes so 25mph/40kph and above. Christina about 22mph.
This helmet is also the one that looks the least ridiculous lol and actually looks kind of cool
Another great unbiased test! Keep up the great work.
What genius thinks a BLACK helmet is a good idea for a helmet that is already hot because of minimal air flow. {SMH}
Wrong.....the color do not play any roll....there is a venturi effect that keeps the air moving at great speed inside...also you have an inch thick of polyurethane in between the fast air moving outside and the air moving by venturi inside....I participated in the design...only in mountain bike where speeds are minimal the color plays a roll...you guys should not treat people who spend countless hours working on physics as "stoopeed".
@@daniellagrimaldi Major issues with your reply: First, the basics: 1) The impact of heat is based on transfer of energy from object a to object b. In other words, heat is a transfer of energy. Less transfer, more energy absorbed/kept. And, vice versa. 2) Venturi Effect, is a change in velocity of a fluid or gas. The increased speed of air causes a decrease in pressure and this decreases pressure resulting in a drop in temperature. Second, using these principals, this is the explanation why black helmet would not be the best color. 1) White color absorbs LESS energy/heat. Black color absorbs MORE energy/heat. So, you have a higher ambient temperature surrounding the surface for the black color. This is why a black surface will melt ice faster. For example, if you have a 25C black color you might have a 22c white temperature. So you have a higher initial ambient temperature. 2) Passive cooling using the Venturi effect for both colors is the same and would result in the same capacity to create a lower temperature. Lets assume that drop is 2c for both. So, for example, the higher black temperature 25c would drop to 23c while the white at 22c would go to 20c. The net results is the black color will always be hotter because it absorbs more energy. The only way this can change is if the black object/helmet had different qualities and design to compensate of more absorb energy caused by the dark color. HOWEVER, the helmets are insulated equally. And, the insulation prevents most of the heat transfer to the head. But, the ambient air inside the helmet will be warmer in a dark helmet. How much this effects the internal temperature of the helmet varies based on the how much air is trapped in "air pockets" within the helmet. It is conceivable that this could be offset by passive cooling with air flow. But, the key point is why start from a warmer ambient temperature with black in the first place when all you need is a white helmet to begin with. The reason they make black helmets is because they don't show dirt as easily and some people like dark colored helmets. But, there is no other justification.
@@daniellagrimaldi Apparently someone didn't like my rebuttal... and deleted the detailed explanation of why the physics says differently. Or, perhaps I can't see the reply. At any rate, the short answer is this: Black helmets absorb more heat than light-colored ones, creating hotter internal air pockets. This means any cooling airflow starts at a HIGHER baseline temperature than in light-colored helmets. While insulation will block heat from reaching the head, it does not remove the fact that black helmets inherently start with hotter internal air pockets and limits the impact of the Venturi Effect. Black plastic is CHEAPER to make and buy. Black helmets show less dirt and some like darker colors. That is the limit of their value.
But 500$ 😭😱
And $700 kits…get used to it I think. I bet other helmets will be more
Given the amount of R&D goes into these and the numbers they sell, it's not as surprising.
Great content! As usual! 🚀
Ah, real world data on high hands, please. That position is slower for me by at least 3 minutes over IM distance via real world testing in Kona on a loop course.
Anybody using Rudy helmets the last several years are used to the clasp system. After several uses it becomes quite instinctual. I also like because in cold swims where fingers dexterity becomes an issue @ T1, it just snaps together. The older clip systems led themselves to fumbling around at the wrong time. Very nice review, will be in my transition bag in ‘25.
Guys, please forget about Giro Aerohead. No reason to compare WindDream with old outdated and outperformed helmets. Instead of Giro you should have taken S-Works TT5 to this review. That’s the only rival for WingDream at the moment. And please compare Specialized Evade 3 and Poc Procen as top road all-around helmets
The Aerohead Ultimate was used by several athletes in Paris who had access to the new Giro but chose it instead. It won a gold medal. The vented version sold to the public isn’t a top helmet anymore, but the Ultimate, no longer publicly available, is still relevant. We tested the TT5 in a previous video. It was overshadowed by the Kask Mistral (a difficult helmet to beat) and is really only good when your head is held in the perfect position.
I suspect most of us would like to see a test vs the Aerohead 2 rather than the Aerohead
Comparing to the aerohead is useful since a lot of triathletes (age groupers) still use it.
@@fastorfiction so, are you saying that the rudy wingdream is likely faster for most than the TT5? - great vids! just found you and subscribed!
Really enjoy the video. Can’t wait to see this helmet go up against the new Giro. It would be great to have an excuse to were something besides the Giro, though kudos to them for thinking outside the box.
The Giro really interests me because I’ve heard mixed rumors on its performance. I noted several athletes who had access to it for Paris instead chose the older Aerohead Ultimate. Can’t wait to test it.
Any plan to test it against POC Tempor!?
No plans. That helmet is great when you keep your head in the perfect pain, but the moment you move it, it’s no good. It tests well in a tunnel, but rarely does it work in the real world. It’s an old design people had given up on because it wasn’t fast for this reason. It only came back because I’d the Huub track guys (one of whom was my client) used them for pursuit. For a short event like that, it can be quite good.
@@fastorfictionWould you say this would perform okay when not in the position during a triathlon event?
@@thenoclue90 I don’t think any aero helmet would perform as intended out of the aero position, but I guess it depends on what you’re comparing it to.
@@jtmanton many triathletes with more upright positions than road cyclists have done testing and found that TT helmets are still faster. *I'd absolutely not want to wear one at road cycling speeds though, or even as a slower triathlete doing anything long unless it was a very cool day
You have one of my favorite channels. I love your content! It is nice to know that I can trust your findings too.
Thanks so much for the content. I'm an aero geek and I look forward to each and every video.
Constructive feedback! Maybe you could give us some photos of the athletes (standing up) and their positions in the bike. This would help us a lot to relate our body’s and position with them :) Shout out from Brazil! 🇧🇷
We will definitely do something like this. I want consistent riders for this exact reason. 👍 Thanks!
Well, I guess these will be selling out within an hour in the USA when ever they become available, for the next year or so!
Glad your back, you’ve left me hanging I have to know about leg hair stubble 😂
Myself as well!
I've been waiting months for that video!!!
Someday.
Very good video, I have an Kask Mistral and love it. As your said, for short UCI with extension max 25 degree it's ok, but with 32,33 degree as pro triathlete today is not design for, but ekoi with Sam Laidlow provide a similar helmet for IRONMAN world championship, let's see if it's works.
8:10 Where are the bitches! I ask this all the time 😅
But the cool factor can make you faster right? 😊
Can it have something whit the fit of suit. If your suit is to big, put a bottle inside
