On November 7, 2024, a violent event in Amsterdam targeted Israeli soccer fans after a UEFA Europa League match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax. A mob attacked these fans, leading to numerous injuries and hospitalisations, an incident that has been widely condemned as antisemitic. This tragic episode draws unsettling parallels to historical pogroms, revealing that antisemitic violence is not ...

It then discusses the capture of the West Bank and Gaza by Jordan and Egypt, respectively, and the impact of the "Three No's" from the Khartoum Resolution. The conflict is framed not as a territorial dispute but as a religious war a...

SUMMARY Palestine” and Roman Renaming: The term “Palestine” indeed dates back to the Roman renaming of Judea to Syria Palaestina after the Bar Kokhba Revolt (132-136 CE). This was likely aimed at diminishing Jewish ties to the land. British Mandate for Palestine: The British Mandate for Palestine (1920-1948) was established to create a Jewish national home, as outlined in the Balfour Declaratio...

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has claimed that Russia invaded Ukraine to prevent NATO’s expansion. He denies that any commitments were made to Soviet regarding NATO’s non-expansion eastward. This contrasts with discussions during the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, when assurances were reportedly given to Gorbachev that NATO would not expand into former Warsaw Pact countries as part ...

    They briefly existed as a kingdom 3000 years ago but fell to the assyrians mostly through corruption and mismanagement

    • @povden
      @povden Місяць тому

      Your comment captures the historical narrative but appears to oversimplify the complexities. This is what I find by diving into it: The united Kingdom of Israel, under Kings David and Solomon, existed around 3000 years ago, flourishing during this period. After Solomon’s death, the kingdom split into Israel (north) and Judah (south). The northern Kingdom of Israel fell to the Assyrians in 722 BCE. While corruption and mismanagement played roles, external pressures, such as Assyrian military might and geopolitical dynamics, were significant factors in the kingdom’s downfall. This is only a snapshot in time of this area’s history, which is filled with tribes of various people and origins, wars, and the rise and fall of civilizations until this day. The central issue of our time is the Mandate for a Jewish Palestine and the ratification in San Remo. Israel, including the West Bank and Gaza, is legally Israel as per international law. Jordan’s annexation of the West Bank was illegal. We don’t have to agree; it is a matter of fact. However, antisemitic propaganda from various sources, including the UN, seems to influence and confuse many. Thanks for motivating me to learn more. @povden

    I was onboard Sea Goddess II as 2nd and First Engineer. This was in the beginning of the 90's when they were under Cunard and Leif Höegh was manning the Officers Positions. At the time the vessels where not that old, but the engine rooms and fan rooms were in much need of maintenance. All the Regoterm wheels where ''used up'' the AC was run manually and If I forgot to turn down on the compressors in the evening the coils would freeze up. Re heat was not working and had to be adjusted manually. Engine Crew where just a tad short staffed. Chief Engineer, 1st Engineer, Chief Electrical Engineer, 2-2nd Engineer's, 1-Electrical Assistant, 3 Motormen, 3 vipers and a Mechanic. Chief Engineer only came down on Standy and just before lunch. We never had ''riding crew'' and overhauls of axillary engines usually took place during the ocean crossings where you only needed 2 axillary engines. Oil separators did not work, and I had to rebuild the sewage treatment plant that had been ''forgotten'' for years. I hear they have had full engine upgrade. And now using Caterpillar's instead of Wartsila engines. Nothing wrong with the Wartsila, but we used heavy fuel, and these engines where not really intended for heavy fuel usage. It was good times; I would not be without. Great small vessels you would fall in love with.

      When I worked on the Sea Goddess 2 in 1986, I held the role of "Chief Electrician". However, without an assistant, I wasn't quite sure what I was "chiefing" 😊 Days started at 6 am, with check rounds all over the ship to make sure everything was in order, taking reports and requests from the hotel staff, kitchen and even grabbing a chocolate from the cooler. In the engine room, the first engineer often bypassed failures by linking the circuitry, but he never informed me of what he did. I managed to catch up on some of it, but likely not all. The rest of the day was spent "fire-fighting" all over the ship, primarily in the hotel, laundry and kitchen, and of course, the engine room. The days were long, 12 + hours with on-call duties 24/7. There was a PM system, which was only opened once at the handover, but there was no time for regular maintenance at all. The maintenance philosophy was obviously "run to breakdown". I noticed that the engineers operated accordingly. In the 90s, it is obvious that the systems would start breaking down, as a result of many years of neglected maintenance. You described it very well and I'm not surprised.

      @@jurgenheim6106 I guess Wartsila engines were a natural choice for the Sea Goddesses, as they were built by the Wartsila Helsinki yard, however i totally agree that smaller units would have benefited the space constraints "downstairs". (I don't know which type of engines are in service aboard the Sea Dreams today.)
