In this series I'm going to upgrade a Naim NAC102 by adding to the individual circuits a simple 'capacitance multiplier' / Gyrator Regulator and removing some components it replaces. The Gyrator Regulator used is available here: avondaleaudio.com/#!/Gyrator/p/626748188/category=0 Large sound quality gains can be had for very little financial outlay info here:- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyrator

I had to install a NOS TDA1541a DAC because the original S1 (Single Crown) TDA1541A had expired. Sadly the camera battery run out while I was doing the DAC swap out so not much soldering action to see but some info/insight that may be of interest to some. I believe the CD3 here was just one variant of what Avondale Audio could supply at the time, I have seen others that where slightly different...

    main reason not to leave any CDP powered up 24/7 that uses this classic multibit dac , first thing that goes is the OSC giving that static noise after its warmed up . Its worth heat sinking these chips

    Thank you for this, actually it's up to you to please choose if you want to communicate with those lacking some technical knowledge or not, I prefer some more detail and instead feel like turning of when I again hear the basics. At 12 min you do well explaining things in a basic fashion and for those that need that it's all well and good. But probably aim your channel more for one or the other. some prefer an introduction, others, like myself have long since gotten bored with basics. thank you again

    Here I'll add my thanks to you Graham for your deliberations and kind comments. We did indeed make around 30 pairs of the ReV Ones and a similar number of the ReV Two. The company I formed to make them - RMS Ltd, was financed from my endeavours as Avondale Audio and as such, had a finite limit. At the time, we made product for Stands Unique of Northants but when the owner retired to sunnier climes, a major source of income dried up so RMS had to close. I've since made several prototypes of an improved ReV using carbon fibre and CNC machined alloy baffles for the casework - they sound even better then the original models and have an uncanny ability to disappear. A few details I forgot to mention to you Graham: The carbon fibre tube inside the 'leg' is pre-tensioned by a stiffening rod tensioned to raise the frequency at which it responates. This tuned tube won't transmit bass energy down its length & the sprung foot rejects bass energy going into the floor - bass that's lost forever as music. Add to this formula the carbon fibre decoupled spikes and the bass energy has nowhere to go but into the room. The problems I encountered with this design were that it was too revolutionary in appearance and secondly, I had no budget for marketing.

    Hi Do you mind just re-listing the caps and the voltages. The lower right red cap you didn’t mention the voltage. Thanks Also i have 2 similar boards, not sure the model but layout the same except the transistors are fitted to the pcb. All the transistors test as ok including main output ones, but i know one or two could still have a fault. I’m getting high voltage pretty much every on the board ,speaker terminals and even the inputs. Both boards have same issue. Any help would be appreciated please. Thanks

    Two slight corrections rather than bad mouthing. Firstly, ordinary rectifiers are silicon, not ceramic. Secondly, the output of a full-wave rectifier is not a squarewave, but a 'lumpy' DC either negative or positive, ready to be smoothed into a flatter DC, by the big capacitors. I like your mod to the solder sucker - I'll try that.

    Yes but it's not a naim anymore if you start changing all the amplifier modules for somebody else's design becomes their design, it will loses its character doesn't it. Has lost its Valley you can't sell it as a naim nap with all those changes it's deceiving. Why did you cut the wires from the transformer you could have just flip the other board and have a mirror image the wires wouldn't need to be cut.

  • @jedi-mic

    Is it a switching voltage regulator or linear, was the original linear or switching? I've got a Leek original 30 what do you think is best regulator to use in it? the Transformers a bit small so I'd like to probably get something bigger maybe 500 va and blitz it needs complete restoration is there any kits or information out there it will be a pain to have to go through every transistor and research it thanks sounds nice

    @ 20:40 , Whatever you used to install those crimps onto the wire, that is not the proper crimp tool for those crimps. You need something more akin to a molex pin crimping tool, as it will properly bend the ears of the crimp over and into the wire instead of just smashing it flat, and it will do the same on the ears over the insulation on the wire. You really wouldn't even need to solder the crimp to the wire with the proper crimper.

    Hey, could this be build with a passive volume control and source switch as a "integrated amp" or does this SE200 config need a dedicated preamp? Thanks so much btw. I would also be interested in a SE200 SE230 comparison. Sadly only the 200 is available at this time.

    • @thediyaudioimplementers1826
      @thediyaudioimplementers1826 8 місяців тому

      Yes it could be built with a passive pre and switching in one box, I have used one with a 0 gain pre amp with great results. Switched inputs is just as many inputs as you like if the switch used can handle the no.

    I have a pair , bought them over 10 years ago for £500 , they are interesting , sound clean , but they do start to "quack" at silly volumes ... Is that 75dB at 1 watt @ 1 m ?

    • @thediyaudioimplementers1826
      @thediyaudioimplementers1826 8 місяців тому

      Yes, your about right I think it was about 77db. They aren't very efficient and they really need driving with powerful amp min 100watts SS.

  • @mosfet500
    @mosfet500 8 місяців тому

    You can't hear DC, one rectifier is the same as the next and it's a Schottky, not Scotch - key. It's the overhead and the reserve of a power supply that determines its voltage stability, not the diodes, schottky diodes are used in SMPS circuits where their lower Fr makes a difference, in audio they make no difference, I stopped watching after 5 minutes. Audio guys should do some basic electronics to get an understanding of what they are working with. I don't want to pick on you but this is why audio is voodoo today and getting worse.

      For me the SE range of amps are much more musical with texture….the Pass Clones are a bit dry sounding IMO. The SE amps were not available when I built the AJ, F5, F5T. Any of the N Pass clones are very good though.
